Leave it to YumSugar to put cupcakes on my brain once again. Did you know she bakes cupcakes and brings them in for the office to sample? Ah, I digress... However she did recently point out a rather interesting report from NPR and the Diet Detective himself, Charles Stewart Platkin, on cupcakes.
Platkin believes that while cupcakes are incredibly delicious, we are not fully aware of their wrath - calorie wise. He took on NYC's finest bakeries, Magnolia (yum) and Crumbs (double yum) and put them against notable grocery heavyweight Hostess. Here are his findings:

| The Crumbs vanilla cupcake (left) has 780 calories and nearly 36 grams of fat. Magnolia's comparatively dainty version has 389 calories and nearly 19 grams of fat. |
OK, so what about when compared to Hostess? To find out, read more

| When is eating a Hostess cupcake going "light"? When you compare it with the Crumbs version (left), which has 542 calories and 25 grams of fat. The original has 181 calories and 6 grams of fat. |

Wow the Hostess one doesn't sound so terrible after that...
1Wow, so maybe next time I ever consider eating a Hostess cupcake I might even take it up.
2why do the Crumbs cupcakes look so horrible?
3but isn't the Hostess cupcake filled with preservatives? They just don't taste fresh because they're designed to sit on the shelf for a week or two.
4Yeah, I'm always a bit weary of treats like cupcakes. It's so easy to forget that you're having a pretty hefty snack when it's so pretty... it's like a minature cake right? How can anything miniature be bad? Oh, if only the world worked MY way...
5ha ha. my friends and i had a taste test with cupcakes once. it was between a 'sprinkles' cupcake (red velvet, of course), a pillsbury cupcake baked at home, and a hostess cupcake.
hostess scored quite low on taste, unfortunately. and texture. lol. it got very low scores in the texture category . . .
(p.s. the pillsbury won)
6But I'm a sucker for sprinkles!
7But bakery cupcakes are so delicious! Argh.
8Crumbs cupcakes are great - they look so much better than the photo above (and they taste great too). Crumbs, Sprinkles, Buttercup, Magnolia - I love them all!
9If you are calorie counting, it's best to eat the Hostess because the nutritional content is listed on the package. You could ask the bakery for their nutritional content, but I doubt they even have a clue.
10Just in time for my birthday. Thanks. Thanks alot.
11OH I adore cupcakes!
12Now I am totally hungry for cupcakes!
13I love cupcakes, but geez, these are horrible for my lifestyle.
14The Crumbs cupcakes look gigantic! I'll stick to making my own cupcakes.
15the saddest part was that i found that article minutes after I had devoured a cupcake...
16It's a good thing I don't like cup cakes!
17ohhh cupcakes...i love the frosting, with just a little bit of cake.
18um omg i just realized the tank top i'm wearing is COVERED in little mini cupcakes! (printed, not real ones!)
19Cute!
20Mmmm...cupcakes.
21BIG cupcake!
22Awww man, I want a cupcake now! I don't really care about the calories, I feel, if you're going to treat yourself, just go all out (make it worthwhile)! But not too often
23big cupcake with a lotta frosting...kinda gross
24I actually prefer just making cupcakes at home because you can control the serving portion a lot more and because making everything from scratch and handbeating the ingredients makes it a little less evil. At least for the baker.
This being said, buttercream from scratch can be a helluva workout but it's worth the work: licking butter cream from a spoon is sinfully good.
