Eating dinner out does not have to be a diet debacle. Nutritionist Alexa Fishback, author of The Daily Fix, believes dining out is an opportunity to eat fish without making your own kitchen smell fishy. Sounds reasonable right? Now here's what she has to say on using dining out as an opportunity to eat fish:
The latest recommendation is for all women to enjoy at least 12 ounces, or 2-3 servings, of fish per week. The only caveat is that women of childbearing age avoid shark, swordfish, tilefish, and king mackerel as these large fish contain the highest levels of mercury. Otherwise — the beneficial qualities reaped from eating fish far outweigh mercury risks. It is a main source of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids.
Some of us are weary about preparing fish in our homes, so to see some good options to order when you eat out, just read more:
- At a steak house, forgo the meat and go for the nice selection of grilled or broiled fish or lobster.
- Try sushi. Go for one roll and several pieces of sushi or sashimi.
- At a French bistro, try a white fish, filleted and covered with lemon juice — it is delicious. Or, order the mussels in white wine or tomato sauce.
- At Italian, go for the warm seafood salad — trust me, it is as tasty as any of the pasta dishes with less calories and more nutrition.

After last night, I've vowed not to cook fish in my kitchen ever again. I always have to deal with the fishy odor after I cook and I am tired of it!
1I'm ticky about eating fish out. I'm yet to find a place to cook fish well enough for me to eat it. But I love sushi, so that's how I get my fish fix when eating out.
I love to cook fish at home. I mostly use catfish though cause it's more affordable here.
2I ordered poached fish once, only to have it arrive on the table drowning in cream sauce!
3Favorite low fat and low stink cooking method, cooking fish topped with fresh ginger and lemon rounds in parchment paper .
Eh.
4I know this sounds bad but I can only eat breaded fish sticks. That is the only type of fish I will eat. Other than that I take fish oil or cod liver oil. My best friend, he loves fish but I don't.
5Mmm, I love fish. I always make salmon and scallops at home, but I like to try other kinds when I eat out. I never really noticed much of an odor.
6I love fish, and I don't care about the odor.
Girlygirl-I do the parchment fish at home all
the time! It's really easy and not especially messy either.
With the exception of steak houses, if we go to a nice-ish restaurant, I'm ordering the fish.
7People should be worried about mercury ingestion from fish and can estimate exposure by entering their weight, fish choice and serving size into the new gotmercury.mobi calculator for cell phone browsers. It’s based on current U. S. EPA and FDA guidelines, weak as they are. Learn more about mercury-laden fish at http://www.gotmercury.org or http://www.diagnosismercury.org
8Is it just me or is that photo really unapatising.
9I am bummed about not being able to eat fish almost every day anymore. I simply can't afford to eat as healthy as I used to and that sucks. Yes, I can go to the Walmart and find bags of salmon or orange roughy...but all that crap is farm raised and full of antibiotics. What's a healthy girl to do?
10I don't love fish, so I get mine in the form of fish oil capsules usually. When we eat out, I usually opt for shrimp or other seafood...sometimes, I'll get salmon if they offer it grilled. But yeah, I'm not a huge fish fan.
11i love fish.
and yes, go for sushi. be careful of the rice though
