There are so many horrible things that can come from smoking cigarettes that it is really insane that cigarettes are still around.

Yet another study, this one from The University of Helsinki, has found another negative side effect of smoking cigarettes. Finnish researchers found that smokers may have a higher risk of depression than those who have never smoked. As if cancer, wrinkles, heart disease, breathing problems, stained teeth, etc... weren't reason enough to give it up, now you can add depression to the list.
Smoking is gross and dangerous to everyone. So if you still smoke, do yourself and those who love you, a favor and quit already.

I know it's not healthy. But neither is being fat. Why don't you use the same tone when writing about unhealthy food and obese people? Really!
1It's amazing how the wanting to look cool usually makes kids forget about all those reasons not to smoke. Then I usually find the adults I know who still smoke just don't care anymore.
2I think this is too casual of a connection. People often smoke as stress relief, SO while people who smoke may have a higher tendancy towards depression, blaming the depression on the smoking itself seems a bit premature. I think you'd find those who are inclined to smoke are also inclined towards depression from the get-go. It's like saying "I sprayed for elephants in my backyard this spring, and I haven't had an elephant problem this year." There are better, and more credible, reasons not to smoke.
3i'm quitting on friday, for the umpteenth time.
last time i made it over a year before work stress got to me. here's hoping this time it's for good, seeing as how i have in fact already been clinically depressed and experienced high blood pressure in my 20's.
it's an addiction.
4The results from this study are absolutely backwards. Did they even take into account that people who suffer from depression are more likely to smoke?
Most smokers start as kids, and I'm sorry, but in my experience, happy kids don't smoke.
5I agree with Rachel and Tikilite. It seems that smoking would be a symptom of depression, not a cause.
6Well.. I smoke and it's definitely not a symptom of depression nor is it causing anything like that, but NOT having a smoke might make me depressed
7oh, and happy kids can easily smoke as well..
I think for most it's just a stress relief and anyone who is smoking because it looks cool.. well that's just stupid. It's sooooo not cool.
I agree with RachelAttack. Smoking is a very common coping mechanishism for people suffering from depression.
8i agree but still, those ppl not depressed and still smoking, do they just choose to ignore the risks?
9i dunno...smoking makes me depressed because i'm smoking a nasty, horrible, cigarette! ugh. help!
