True or False: Drinking water before (and during) exercise will lead to cramps.
To find out the answer, read more
FALSE! The truth is that cramps can be a symptom of dehydration and drinking water will help ensure that you are not dehydrated, which will ultimately reduce your risk of getting cramps. Most people wait until they are thirsty to drink water, but that is not the best idea, especially when exercising. So here are some tips on keeping hydrated while working out:
- Drink 8 oz of water 20 to 30 minutes prior to exercising.
- Drink 4-8 oz of water every 10 to 15 minutes during exercise.
- Drink an additional 8 oz of water within 30 minutes after exercising.
- Drink 16 oz (2 cups) of water for every pound of body weight lost after exercise.

I got it right!
1Yay. Got it right.
2i try to adhere to that but i ALWAYS get cramps when i go running. no matter what. every single time it seems like. is there something wrong with me that i should be worried about? sometimes they can be quite painful.
3I drink a ton of water before/during/after working out. And eating a banana before hand ensures that I'll be cramp free!
4Wow, this explains what happened last night! I went to the gym and had major pains. I ended up cutting my workout short and going home. Now I know...Water before and during workout is good
Thanks!
5Haha! I was right! I guess having a personal trainer for an uncle and a mom who teaching kickboxing pays off!
6I always eat something small like an apple with a little bit of peanut butter before I work out and then wash it down with tons of water. Every once and a while I will get a cramp but eating something before really helps a lot.
7Thanks for enlightenment!
8I remember that I was told that if you still get cramps, try raising your arms up and stretching to the left and that should help ease it. Hold the stretch for 30 seconds and then repeat it to other side.
9false! got it right!
10haha i believe this, but when i do drink water before or during i get a cramp in my side, and if i don't drink till after, i don't get a cramp... so whats the deal? haha
11I get cramps when alternating between sprinting and walking. I've never thought about dehydration before. I'll keep in mind to drink a glass of water before I go out next time.
12I can't imagine water having any negative quality at all.
13Well I drink a ton of water before/during working out and I never have craps. So that would be a FALSE.
14This helps! I've always drank water during working out.. rarely before, and practically never after unless its been an hour or so since I've left the gym... thanks for an informative article!
