For many of us, the new year marked our recommitment to healthy eating. Nutritionist Alexa Fishback, author of The Daily Fix, feels indulging in a "sweet nothing" daily is a healthy habit. If that sounds like an adoptable habit to you, stay tuned for upcoming nutrition tips from Alexa and be sure to enter our Get Fit For 2009 giveaway for a chance to win a personalized nutrition plan created by Alexa, along with many other amazing goodies.
Here's what Alexa has to say about satisfying your sweet tooth:
"Sweet nothings" are your everyday zero to 150 calorie dessert "do." I have found that women who allow themselves a sweet indulgence every day do not have the cravings that lead to binge eating and don't feel deprived.
For some ideas of sweet snacks that are OK to enjoy every day, on top of your three meals and two snacks read more:
- A skim cappuccino sprinkled with cinnamon and a small biscotti
- Hot chocolate: try the 25-35 calorie packets mixed with hot water
- One ounce dark chocolate or a mini-sized peppermint patty
- Dressed up fruit: frozen grapes, a baked apple sprinkled with cinnamon, or a fresh peach diced into ½ cup of nonfat vanilla yogurt
Make sure to partake in the sweet life every day, and without sacrificing your figure or your health!

Oooh great ideas, thanks! I do keep some dark chocolate at my desk - that way when I feel like having something sweet, I'm not tempted by a huge slice of cake from the cafe downstairs. (and I'm saving a lot of money!)
1I've always done this. Even when I was counting calories and tyring to lose weight, I made a point to have something sweet every day and "saving" my calories for it.
I really feel that is why I never "binged" and why I continue to eat healthy.
I'd recommend it to everyone.
2Fruit fills my daily sweet tooth quota -- it's dessert by nature!
3I actually saw her speak last night at a book signing event and she was great! Gave advice on sweets, what time of day to eat, when to spend on organics and more!
4Mmmm hot cocoa...
5I've been following that this year, and it's really great to not feel deprived. I think including sweets in your life (in controlled portions) really makes for a balanced diet.
6I allow myself one cup of coffee with Splenda and a little fat free creamer...it's kind of like a dessert, but it doesn't have a ton of calories and it satisfies my sweet tooth.
7I prepare sugar free Jell-o and add a spoon of heavy cream, this is really good for me and completely compatible with low carb diets.
