The darker the berry... the greater the antioxidants - just doesn't have the same ring as the sweeter the juice, but so true in the case of blueberries. Those tiny blue fruit gems are just loaded with good things for you and me.
Blueberries are antioxidants and have been found to be one of the most effective foods for destroying free radicals. It is the blue-red pigment in the berries that make them such powerful warriors against the carcinogenic free radicals. They are also a low calorie, high fiber food.
In a recent study performed on rats, blueberry extract improved age related memory loss, balance and coordination in "elderly" rats. These berries also contain tannins that help decrease inflammation, particularly in the digestive system. Plus blueberries promote urinary tract health, which is important if you are battling a UTI on vacation overseas and can't get your hands on cranberry juice.
The best thing about blueberries is they are in season right now through early fall. I love them in fruit salad, on yogurt or just in my morning bowl of cereal. How about you?

I'll eat them plain! I just LOOOOVE blueberries.
1I love blueberries! plain for me...but they are so expensive right now. imight try to get some at the farmer's market this weekend.
2I love blueberries, but these are one of those foods I don't eat. I am trying to tune into what my body likes, wants, doesn't like and doesn't want. apparently, my body doesn't want these lovely berries! The only way i could eat them, I think, is if I made them into a warm fruit compote and ate it for dessert or something.
3I sometimes make a blueberry sauce to go over my waffles on Sat. mornings. I put them in my cottage cheese too.
4I like them on my cereal, and mixed in yogurt... That's actually the snack I brought for myself this afternoon! Yogurt with blueberries and raspberries mixed in, yummmmmm
5I am not a huge blueberry girl but i do try to eat them for their helath benefits.
6I lke to drink blueberry juice mixed with sparkling water and a slice of lemon. Refreshing!
7I'm no elderly rat, but I do put them into my morning oatmeal. I love the tangy-ness of those tasty little bites to perk up the blander oatmeal flavor. I also always put them into my Fresh Fruit Breakfast Trifle... (wish I could remember how to post the link to that recipe
)
8I love all berries, but why are they always 3$ for just 6 oz? That's more that 6$ a pound! Woe :'(
9I mix them in with my oatmeal & a little peanut butter. Tastes like a peanut butter and blueberry sandwich. YUM! Also I buy them frozen and can usually get them $2.50 for a 16 oz. bag on sale. May not be totally the same but much cheaper! I will only buy them fresh when they are waaaaay on sale. Crazy how good for ya food costs so much.
10I come from Northern Ontario where blueberries grow everywhere. People park on the sides of major streets to go picking during the summer. The bushes line the driveway to my cottage, so it's great to have them on cereal, or just with milk and a little sugar on a warm July morning by the lake.
11scratch5, that sounds REALLY good
12You ask "what's not to love?" - Honestly, the taste. I cannot stand the taste or lack there of. I've tried wild blueberries, and you name the different varieties and blah tasteless. But I still add them to my protein shake for the antioxidant boost. But I tried to pulverize the darn skin cause its horribly thick and bitter.
13I like them plain, with yogurt, with oatmeal, in smoothies, in pancakes... I just like them!
14i used to think i hated blueberries... i guess cause they were not at cute as strawberries? or that they never look quite clean? who knows! but i love having a bowl of strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, and blueberries in the morning or for a midday snack. plus ive been reading all over the place how berries are so good for you! yay!
15I make my daughter breakfast parfait thingies with organic oatmeal & grahams crushed in the bottom then layer yogurt and berries. She thinks she is getting dessert in the morning. I prefer wild to the big ones but I like them all.
16i love blueberries on everything and that phrase the darker the berry the sweeter the juice is so so so true
17I love blueberries.
