In the fitness world, they say if the mind is bored, the body must be too. Really...they say that - I have heard it and lived it. If you suffer from boredom or have a body that easily adjusts to however you challenge it, I have a workout plan that might just be for you.
Gunnar Peterson, trainer to the stars (like Jennifer Lopez, Bruce Willis and Ben Affleck), likes to mix it up for his clients cardio-wise. This keeps the body guessing and the mind occupied. Instead of spending 30 minutes on just one piece of cardio equipment, spend your cardio time on different machines for different amounts of time.

The cardio plan looks like this:
4:00 minutes on treadmill
5:00 minutes on elliptical
6:00 minutes on stair stepper
6:00 minutes on treadmill
5:00 minutes on elliptical
4:00 minutes on stair stepper
This totals 30 minutes, 10 on each machine. Each workout you should try to use different machines, so add rowing machine, StepMill, and stationary bike into the mix as well. You know really mix it up. this way you might fel compelled to use your least favorite piece of equipment since you won't be on it the entire workout - just 10 minutes broken up into doable chunks.

right now I usually 10-12 min on the bike and 15 on the treadmill, but I really like the idea of changing machines after 4-6 minutes spurts. I might actually use the stairmaster if I know I'll only be on in for 6 minutes max!
1This sounds like a great idea. I hae tried switching up on the machines - my apt gym has an elliptical, a recumbent bike, and 2 treadmills. I usually give up my favorite - the elliptical to my roommate because his doctor told him to do more with the elliptical over the bike. I have no stamina on the bike, and get tired of walking fast on the treadmill. Switching up would be good!
2the only problem with this is that there are usually no empty machines at my college gym.. meaning u have to wait to use any cardio machine.
3exactly, brielleblonde--so when i'm on one, i stay there until my limit's up.
4I used to do this when I was at the gym - but I hate the gymn so now I dance and am going to start doing this at home using the elliptical machine and lunges and squats (as I really don't like doing them)
5I definitely agree to switching it up. I cannot do 45 minutes of straight cardio, but if I do 15 each on the elliptical, bike, and treadmill, it goes much faster!
6I believe I can do the 10 min for 3 machine each to start off. Cause I don't know if my gym holds all these machines
7switching helped me break my plateau - I switch 3 machines or sometimes 4 machines or sometimes just 2. Key is to make it different every day. I finally saw results within 2 weeks of changing my routine.
8Hmmmm clever indeed.
9Wow, this is a great idea. Simple, but great.
I always have the problem of starting to exercise and then stopping. I guess it's cause I try to walk for 20 mins on the treadmill and get bored. Hopefully this will help and make the time fly by!
10It's realy better to change the machine in cardio workout
i joined a new gym lately
and we do this changing there , but unfortunately you may not find and empty mahchine again
11I have a feeling this type of workout won't help build endurance though.
12i wish i can do that i have been trying to use the stepper seance feb its always occupaid @ my gym i just have been sticking to the treadmill and elliptical
13see now... I would get all confused. Heck, I'm confused at remember the time frames just reading his article
I take classes during the week in addition to cardio machines to mix it up a bit and to be easy on my mind, so I can focus on my body.
