It amazes me how celebs like Tori Spelling, Jessica Alba, and Christina Aguilera have slimmed down so quickly after having their babies. Another new mom, Naomi Watts, can join that list too. The 40-year-old actress is already close to her pre-baby figure since giving birth to her second just about a month ago. She owes it all to breastfeeding. Naomi explained to People magazine that her son is "sucking it all out of me, it seems. And when the baby comes out, it's a lot of weight right there."
While it's true that breastfeeding does burn up a lot of calories, solely nursing to lose baby weight isn't the magic pill. It's a combination of that, eating right, and exercising that can help a new mom shrink down to the size she was before becoming pregnant. It is good to remember that some women just lose baby weight more easily than others; I think genes play a role in this process.

Also, most of the celebs don't gain very much weight during their pregnancies so they don't have a ton to lose
1Also also, they have the resources to hire the best trainers, nutritionists, and personal chefs to coach them, plus the time (and nannies) to allow them make losing weight a full-time job. This isn't meant to be derogatory--they're still eating the healthy meals and doing the exercise, after all, which is something (assuming they weren't assisted by tummy tucks with their c-sections)--but should be taken into account when we admire celebs for their amazing transformations.
2Fit, I know you're a mom and I'd be more interested to hear a real woman's perspective of losing baby weight.
Maybe even a series where we keep up with a new mom for 6 months or something.
These celeb baby weight stories are just nauseating and say the same thing over and over.
3I'm nursing twins and running after two older children and the weight is not "falling off". If my last pregnancy is any indication, I'm just going to have to diet and exercise to lose the weight. These celebrity "I just breasfeed" stories make me crazy.
4syako I agree. If we all had their money for a chef and trainer it would "fall off" us as well.
5Not to mention Spanx under the red carpet dresses for most of them!
6Breastfeeding is an cover-up for "I've been starving myself since I had the baby."
7Everyone is so dead-on here! Give us the stories of real women!
I think none of these celeb-moms would reveal what they are eating (rather, not eating) these days...
8My sister breastfed and she didn't lose a ton of baby weight doing that; probably because she continued to actually eat while doing it. When celebs say "All I did was breastfeed", they probably went back to eating their prebaby diet (ie, spinach and fish) while their kiddo is sucking 500 calories a day out of them. Of course you'll lose weight doing that. But a lot of REAL women eat more when they nurse because they're starving to death most of the time
9I hate this "breastfeeding" lie they are perpetuating. It is so wrong. I am breastfeeding my 3 1/2 months old, and only gained 25lb during my pregnancy. And guess what, I WOULD NOT LOSE THE REMAINING WEIGHT JUST BY BREASTFEEDING. Unless I stopped eating. I have a huge luxury of having a nanny and a personal trainer. I do cardio 3 times a week. I've also been doing pilates lately. That's how I am losing weight. Why are these celebrities refusing to acknowledge that they aren't some SUPERIOR BEINGS and that it takes a lot of hard work + a lot of extra-help to get back in shape?
10I'm a little scared to be the voice of dissent here, but I did lose the baby weight really quickly, by nursing. I didn't exercise, and I lost the 40 pounds I gained the first time and the 30 pounds I gained the second time within two weeks. I was still a size bigger at the same weight I had been, but the pounds were gone.
Now, I was overweight when I GOT pregnant. I have since lost 50 additional pounds. Sure, things are saggier and stretch-marked now that I've had babies, but I honestly didn't have trouble losing baby weight.
The bottom line is - every one is different. Just as we shouldn't compare our bodies to celebrity bodies we see on magazines, we shouldn't compare our post-baby bodies to others'. We should rejoice in what our bodies can do, and not wish they looked different. Easier said than done, I know. Just my dream!
11You know what? I breastfed all my kids, am as pro-breastfeeding as they get, would love to encourage every mom who possibly can to breastfeed for as long as their baby wants to and it works for both of them. BUT ... I found I didn't realize lose weight until I weaned. And most of my friends had the same experience; La Leche League said it's not unusual. Your metabolism works a bit differently when you're nursing, because your body knows you need to feed a baby too. Sure, you're burning a few hundred calories a day producing milk, but it's not quite that simple. I always lost about 75% of the baby weight within 6 weeks, just cause that was baby, plus placenta, plus extra blood volume; but the 25% that was extra fat stores stayed. And then when I weaned, I didn't eat less or exercise more, it just slid off a couple of pounds per week.
So my point is NOT "don't breastfeed" and I do know that for some people, they do lose weight while nursing. But whenever I hear these celebrities attribute it all to nursing, I roll my eyes. Some of them? Sure. The rest? A post-caesarian tummy tuck, plus then they probably nursed for about two weeks and then weaned so they could go back to diet pills and anorexia.
12Women please take the first 6 weeks and rest and bond with your baby you'll have forever to obsess and exercise and starve yourself later if you must! i don't understand having a baby to pass it off just after birth with the mindset of I have to lose the weight. Take a look at that miracle love him hold him and in about 6 weeks you will be ready mentally and physically to approach an exercise plan. And your baby will have reaped amazing benefits from your time and love that last forever.
13I'm not a skinny girl, I'm an average girl, and I gained about 30 pounds with both of my pregnancies. However, within six days of having each daughter, I had lost all the baby weight plus 10 pounds. I wasn't toned of course, but both times I ended up 10 pounds lighter than when I started. And I didn't breastfeed, I couldn't with the first daughter and chose not to with my second. My sister is nursing her son and she was a runner before she got pregnant, and the weight is just not falling off, it's almost shocking how big she still is! But everyone is different!
14I love the direction this discussion took! Syako was right, stories like this are only bound to make us frustrated with ourselves when we don't have the resources that these celebrities have. Or jealous of Hockey Princess who gets at least a little help.
As jdprima said,
they are still doing the work, and it's admirable, but also: it is Naomi Watts' JOB to look perfect. If you're an attorney or you work in retail, taking a while to lose the weight is not
going to interfere with your ability to do your job. Sure, many women want to lose the weight to look more attractive and be healthy, but shouldn't be required to do so in a month.
I got the set of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" DVD's for Christmas, and I've been watching them, and impressed by how thin and athletic Sarah Michelle Gellar is. It actually inspired me to take up Taekwondo, which is great, but I also did a google search to see what her diet is. Apparently she is "thinspiration" to many anorexics, and admits to having a pretty strict diet, but I did find this quote from her, which really drove the point home:
"Look, it's crazy for people to try to be as thin as we are. We have personal trainers and personal chefs. It's our job to look this way."
So, yes, maybe Naomi Watts did lose the weight breastfeeding, as librarychic pointed out, not all women are the same, but we really shouldn't beat ourselves up if we aren't as skinny or can't lose weight as quickly as these celebs.
And I would definitely be more interested in hearing fit's personal experience with this!
15I will say that she looks pretty good for just having a baby last month. I'm sure it helps having infitite resources (e.g. trainer, chef, nannies)!
I can't just believe that she has been 'only' breastfeeding.
16Blah, Blah, Blah, it's breastfeeding! Oh please, tell me something i don't
17Know. Sorry didn't finish my sentence
18My sister didn't gain much during her pregnancy, but after, she dropped the weight so quickly--and I know she doesn't work out at all. She's so skinny (but bigger boned so it's not so obvious), but I want to feed her a burger sometimes!
19Thankfully my mom, at 45 years old, is 110 pounds and my sister, at 29 years old and two kids under 3 years old, weighs about 125lbs. So if it's genetic, i'm golden !lol
20LOL Jeny!
21I'm like about aging. My grandmother looks great, my mom looks about 15 years younger than she is (other people have told me this too) so I'm not all fearful about aging...the baby weight thing? My mom was a twig (and remained one even after two kids) but after the third one? Thats the weight that seem to get stuck on her. I guess maybe I'll just have two kids then, lol!
Oh and to everyone complaining. First off, people's bodies are different, what works for some doesn't work for others. And I'd like to echo the idea that you know what? If not YOUR job to look skinny 24/7. It's hers (and Hollywood's). They HAVE to look like that, because think about those times when they do put on some weight (all those articles about how "fat" JLo got durring her pregnancies, Jennifer Love Hewitt's bikini pics). People/Media crucified them for looking that way. You make think differently about things like this is you were in the spotlight and people were always criticizing every pound gained or lost. Oh course they can't tell the truth about weight loss (assuming it "is" a lie) because if they said "Oh, I've very strict about my calories, only X amount is allowed daily" people/media would complain about that too.
Sorry, I'm not a celebrity lover or anything. This type of thing just always reminds me about how back when I was huge I dropped a lot of weight and people would comment "Oh, youre so lucky youre skinny!" or spread rumors that I must throw up or have starved myself, giving me no credit for working my butt off (literally) and being really careful about my calories.
