Dear FitSugar,
Can you explain what a good weight range is for different heights? You hear so many weights for different heights and such a huge range. I am wondering what is the healthiest weight at each height.
Interesting question! Since body weight is a dynamic force (it is common to fluctuate in a 5 pound range over a month) the "recommended" weight is really not meant for you to measure yourself against. It is more for you to use as a reference point. With that in mind, check out this handy dandy chart to help answer your question. For each height, I listed "Recommended Weight," but also showed the "Lowest" and "Highest Healthy Weights" to show you the range.
This is meant to be a tool to gauge what your weight should be compared to your height. This isn't meant to make you feel bad about yourself. I just want to encourage you to live a long, happy and healthy life, and maintaining the recommended weight for your height is one way to make that happen.
| Height | Recommended Weight in lbs |
Lowest Healthy Weight in lbs |
Highest Healthy Weight in lbs |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4'10" | 105 | 88 | 119 |
| 4'11" | 108 | 91 | 123 |
| 5'0" | 112 | 95 | 127 |
| 5'1" | 116 | 98 | 132 |
| 5'2" | 120 | 100 | 136 |
| 5'3" | 123 | 104 | 140 |
| 5'4" | 127 | 107 | 145 |
| 5'5" | 131 | 110 | 149 |
| 5'6" | 136 | 114 | 154 |
| 5'7" | 140 | 117 | 159 |
| 5'8" | 144 | 121 | 164 |
| 5'9" | 148 | 125 | 169 |
| 5'10" | 153 | 128 | 173 |
| 5'11" | 157 | 132 | 178 |
| 6'0" | 161 | 136 | 184 |
Fit's Tips: You can also check out Fit's BMI (Body Mass Index) calculator. All you do is type in your current height and weight, and it figures out how much body fat you have.
Just so you know, it may overestimate body fat in athletes and others who have a muscular build since muscle weighs more than fat. Also remember that a healthy attitude about your body is the most important thing here, and this is just another tool to encourage you to be healthy.

This makes me feel better. I need to lose weight, but I'm pretty unrealistic about it, "Everybody weighs about 120 lbs, why can't I!!!!" Turns out that's way too low for my height anyway.
1It's refreshing to see some 140s as healthy for the taller girls... I'm 5'8 1/2, and I've always fluctuated around the 130 to 140 range... and the way people talk, it's like 140 is a lot! And my God, that's not good for the confidence! I read a really great quote from Rebecca Romijn, and she basically said that when she started gaining a little bit of weight and the tabloids clocked her in at around 144 as her "worst", she wasn't too upset by it because she knew that even at her THINNEST she was at 140.
2It makes me feel better also, I am 5'10 and I have always had the idea in my head that I had to be around 130. I know that if I did get down to 130 I would look anorexic.
3well, ill be honest. I have to lose a whole person (122.5 lbs) before I reach my target weight, BUT I will
This motivates me because I know i will be there *fingers crossed* within a year. in time for my 10 year highschool reunion. (I will also hopefully have a ring on
my left hand too! haha)
4i need to lose 10 lbs =/ but at least i'm not completely unhealthy
5Thank you! I just tried to find this online.
6At 5'8" and 157 I think I just feel worse. I always told myself that I was close to my healthy weight, but 13 lbs...
7I think BMI is pretty lame. I am considered underweight for my height according to it, but I think I am perfectly fine. They don't account for things like muscle or fast metabolisms.
8Yeah I don't know, I'm just barely underweight for my height too, and that doesn't seem right when I look in the mirror! I eat pretty healthy, but I don't look anorexic or anything.
I think I've heard that BMI breaks down the shorter you get...and I'm between 4'11" and 5'. Has anyone else heard this?
9I'm 5'3 and aiming at 110 being now 127 and feeling FAT
10if im 1.45 cm tall :S or short jeje how much is on foot
11I've always been iffy about the BMI. I'm considered as underweight but really I'm just short and have small bones...with a whole lotta fat!
12You know what? I don't know how tall I really am! I'm somewhere in between 5"1 and 5"3. Last Saturday I weighed 122....who knows how much I'll be when I weigh myself again; although I regularly excercise I've been bad with food this week
13Wow...this chart made me sad
14i dont measure in lbs...my scales is in kgs!!
15Me too, JustMe21 - want to head over to the Diet Support Suite with me?
16I don't think BMI is the best, since it doesn't take into account muscle... Take a look at some hockey players, football players... They're like, 6'3" and 240, in perfect shape, all muscle. I bet according to the BMI scale that would be obese. I'm just saying a more accurate way to tell if you're overweight or not is to do a skin fold test.
17This chart is just a guide - and not at all meant to make you feel bad about yourself. It's important to have a healthy body image. I know all the magazines and super models out there already make us feel bad enough, and we don't need our our negative thoughts adding to it!
Maybe this chart can serve as motivation to keep up your healthy lifestyle - eating nutritious food and staying active - that's what it's all about!
18good for you cravinsugar!!!

Awwwwwwww it made little hugging smilies!!!
20lol
Thanks for sharing this. It's important for me to remember that I can be anywhere within the healthy range and that I don't need to strain to reach the bottom of the range. As long as I stay in a healthy place, I'm cool with that.
21Wow, it's great to see those numbers. Even though I've been aware of ranges, that is the most healthy "range" I've seen displayed yet! Most "normal" weight I see for my height (5' 0") has been 100-105, and I could never get down that low. 112 is much better and healther and more realistic!
2295 pounds is in the healthy range for my height?? (5'0") that seems a little too small. i weigh around 102 and would never consider 95 healthy. but like fit said, every body is different. a friend of mine always compares our weight since we are similiar in height. she weighs around 112 pounds but she has curves in all the right places, and i have no chest haha. boobs play a part ladies!!!
23The "recommended" weight looks a little high. Whatever happened to the 100 lbs for 5'0", then +5 lbs. for each additional inch after that?
24Thanks for posting this. I have seen a lot of girls ask questions on the advice page regarding weight. I am glad to know I fit in the right spot with my weight.
25I just converted those (we have the other metric system here ..) and I weigh 112 for 5'5" - which seems pretty normal
26I am so glad you put this on here! I've been wanting to know this myself!!!!!!
27hannah...13 pounds is better then needing to lose 30 or even 50 pounds like some people do to be in the "healthy" category. good luck hun!
cravin...good luck with keeping up the work for your reunion!
28Good to know, thanks.
29Quoting: "Just so you know, it may overestimate body fat in athletes and others who have a muscular build since muscle weighs more than fat."
Muscle DOES NOT weigh more than fat. Please don't say that. Muscle is DENSER than fat, and therefore weighs more per square inch than fat, but ounce for ounce it does not weigh more. (Just like the old question: which weighs more, a ton of feathers or a ton of bricks?)
30Thanks for the chart. It seems right on target.
31umm smart blonde - anything ounce for ounce weighs the same! but it takes less muscle to make up an ounce than it does fat, hence - MUSCLE WEIGHS MORE THAN FAT
32Here's what I don't get about this stuff....
I am 5'3, and weight 135...which is apparently 5 lbs away from being overweight. HOWEVER, I wear a size 4... and I think thats fairly thin. My question is... what is a good size/height ratio. Screw the weight... because I'm pretty sure i weight a lot due to muscle....
33I am 5'10 and I'm 140 pounds. Apparently the scale says I'm eighteen pounds underweight?? 140 is a normal weight for me. I remember when I was doing crazy dieting I was down to around 129-130. I wasn't anorexix looking, but I was extremely slim. I don't plan on doing that stupid diet ever again.
34i'm 5'3 normaly i will wait 120...but i went to belgium to a exchange students programs now i weight 77 kg i feel really sad and fat :-S
