I love the Winter because I love playing in the snow, but I hate the fact that it's also cold and flu season. Aside from washing your hands often, and avoiding contact with sick people, a new study shows that warding off a cold may be as simple as snoozing. In the study, healthy adults had cold viruses sprayed up their noses, and then they stayed in a hotel room for five days. Those who stuck to a regular schedule of at least eight hours of sleep a night were less likely to get sick than those who slept less than seven hours.
While we know that getting enough sleep can help boost our immune system, this research shows that small sleep disturbances can increase the risk of getting sick. The bottom line is that during the next few months, be sure to stick to a consistent sleep routine. A lack of sleep is also tied to weight gain, and an increased risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. So here's another great reason to sleep in!

in the past, getting enough sleep has always been hard for me, and actually falling asleep still is, but i feel like i've been getting more rest than usual, so hopefully this will do my body good and i'll be able to avoid the numerous winter colds that i've gotten in previous years.
1I completely believe this. I hardly ever get sick during cold and flu season (knock on wood anyway), and getting enough sleep is very important to me.
2you read my mind!! i think this is so true.
i was just thinking that i've done really well with eating healthy and exercising this week but have probably not gotten enough sleep! and then i started sneezing which has gotten me afraid i'm coming down with a cold!
i've heard that elite athletes have to spend quite a bit of their day resting. paula radcliffe - the english marathon runner - takes a nap every day.
3I have had my sleep schedule tottaly disturbed ( getting less than 6 hours a night) and now I'm sick. Go figure.
4UrbanBohemian same here. I'm hoping to make it in the clear for this season too!
5im pretty excellent about getting 8 hours of sleep. i havent gotten sick this season *knock on wood*
