I am introducing a new feature on FitSugar called What's Your Advice for... because I've noticed that you guys are full of fabulous information for your fellow Sugar readers when they are in need of some advice. So here is your very first assignment:
HELP! When I first start a workout program I go full force ahead, but then I lose steam after a few months. How can I stay motivated because I still want to lose about ten pounds?

Do you have a pic of you from 10 pounds ago? Do you like the way you feel when you are finished with your work out? I try to focus on the things i like about what im doing....seeing the ducks in the river when i walk, feeling energized all day long because i am exercising regularly, (and of course that added benefit of seeing results haha) So, my advice: Focus on what you like about what you are doing, and how good you will feel when you have reached your goal.
1I had the same problem would start out trying to do too much too fast and would quit after a few weeks. What I finally did and it has worked except for the week I was sick.
Week One: 3 Days a week 45 minutes of cardio
Week Two: 4 Days a week 45 minutes of cardio
Week Three: 5 Days a week 45 minutes of cardio
After one month of cardio for 5 days a week I have added 3 days of strength training and I have stuck with since January. In the past I would jump in with both feet and quit because I was pushing myself too hard. This is the only advice I have ever taken from that Bob Greene on Oprah and it has totally worked!
2My advice is change it up. I love lifting weights and when I work that in to my normal routeine, I am excited to go workout
3I always had the same problem as you until I decided to stop exercising for weight loss.
4Now I just do things that I enjoy, and I focus on the fitness benefits rather than inch or pound loss.
I run a couple of kilometres 2-3 times a week and usually do light weights on the days I don't run. I also take the stairs and walk and go out dancing.
If I don't feel like working out then I don't. If you're not into it you won't give it your effort or full attention, and you won't get the same buzz. Often I'll find that if I'm not willing in the morning I'll be geared up to do it in the evening after work, and have a much better workout than if I'd forced myself earlier.
I find what helps me most is changing my work out constantly.
5I never do the same 2 times in a row. I walk in the treadmill moderately with intervals of incline no less that 5 and every minute after warm up I add a minute for 6 minutes, then I recover and start all over until I reach 30 - 45 min. Some days I do the arc trainer for 30-45 minute, do weights after. Some I take a class. Mixing it up is the only way I can stay interested in the gym.
I have struggled with this in the past and so far, the best thing I've found is to actively surround myself with things that remind me that health (being active, eating well) is a priority. For example, reading FitSugar ever day is a great way to stay on track and stay motivated. I track all my workouts on mapmyrun.com and seeing progress keeps me inspired. Surround yourself with information- there are some great books out there, like "You: On A Diet" and "Food Cures." Once I started eating well to be healthier and have more energy, it was a lot easier to turn down tempting food than when I did it solely for vanity. At the same time, though, you can't go crazy- if you are too extreme in your diet/exercise, you are going to run out of steam pretty quickly. The key is having a mindset that these are lifestyle changes...
6First i try to make it fun not a chore... i really like working out but there are timesi really don't want to go i take a day off. Then if i feel the same way the next day i try a completely new thing- i taek a new class or play a sport for a day or two-- anything new to keep me moving fora few days until iget over my workout slump.
7Change it up!!!! Your body gets bored and used to the same exercise over and over again. Also, I use exercise as "my time". I think about how empowering exercise makes me feel and how awesome I feel physically and mentally after a work out. Thinking about those things really helps me get through a blah workout day and keep me motivated. Also, set up small goals that are possible to reach....reward yourself after you meet each goal!
8i have to say...finding a pic of me from 5 years and 20lbs ago was sooooo VERY motivating. heck i cant be 22 again but i can trim back up!
9I do the same thing. So when I joined a gym in January I bought personal training sessions. When I start to lose momentum (usually about every 6 weeks, to be honest) I break out a session. My trainer inspires me to work hard & gives me new ideas that I use until I start to slide again.
10That's great advice guys. I'm not the one who asked the question, but it sure will help me...I could use the motivation!
11I recently did a fitness challenge with SELF magazine and found that what motivated me was logging in constantly to a fitness forum. We had a group and the same ladies would log in and talk about their challenges, achievements, and we would have weekly challenges. I'm in my last week of the challenge and am leaving the forum so I can leave room for people still going through the 12-week challenge. BUT - I know how much the forum helped me so I actually just started a group here on popsugar called Fitness Challenge Group to continue the tradition. Feel free to join. It's the first week and I posted a challenge on there so people can write in and we can do other motivational activities to keep the fun alive!
12These are all great tips. I have exactly the same problem and thes look like they might actually help!
13Go with a friend. They help motivate. Once you get there make sure you stay the whole time, and if you want to ditch have your friend make you stay. Taking a class helps. I hate leaving in the middle of a class! So, it keeps me motivated to stay.
14i definitely agree with everything being said above.. all great motivation... i tend to work out after work and what helps me stay motivated is the idea of what i would be doing if i didn't work out. Example, would i rather go for a run at the beach and get some fresh air or sit at home and start watching tv for a good couple of hours and feel gross... it's weird but i works, you realize what would make you feel better and just get out there and do it
15I agree with cravinsugar. Keeping an old picture of your old weight is a great reminder of what you are try to avoid falling back to. I definitely like that idea.
16Do things you enjoy. When you stop enjoying something, try something new... even if you expect that you'll hate it, you never know.
17I put on my workout clothes and shoes before I can start to think about not working out. It helps get me out the door.
18I agree with a lot of the comments above, change it up! You may be feeling bored with your workout... so find something else that you like to do and it will get you back into the groove. Try and remember how awesome it felt when you were working out as well. And how much sweeter it will be when you reach your goal!
19i bought a new "skinny outfit" that i'm dying to get into. that's what's keeping me motivated. (that, and of course all the glorious skinny clothes i can buy when i'm down to my target weight!)
201.- Love yourself. 2.- When bored and lack of motivation, change all the routine, maybe outdoors for indoors, modify your schedule and training. 3.- Pamper you with comfort and healthy food 4.- Good music during work out. 5. Nice outfit for working out, feel beautiful and sexy. 6.- Breath and enjoy this wonderful day God gives to you. 7.- Afterward, walk like the princess you are, feel good with yourself. 8.- Enjoy life, be happy.
21Oh please, I have the same problem, my motivation just fades away. The only thing that ever worked for me was falling in love
but those butterflies can't stay there forever!!!
22Yep, changing it up works for me! But I'm still in the "honeymoon stage" of a new workout program. Talk to me in a few more weeks...
23Set a short term goal, and a long term goal. If your just focused on the long term, you're going to get frustrated because its always going to seem so far away.
24I too struggle with this. Try getting a buddy, either to work with or to compete with. Give your self a goal like an event holiday. Treat yourself when you reach certain points.
25i have the same problem too.. hopefully i can look at the comments & get info out of it
26When I was in university I didn't have cable, but my gym did. There was this show I was obsessed with but couldnt watch, so I would head to the gym and workout just so I could watch the show!
It's really the only thing that helped me then . . . I had the exact same problem as you, but since the show was once a week I still wasnt getting enough cardio (which to be honest I really hate anyways) and didnt do any weight training.
I have cable now, but Ill try to decide that Im only allowed to watch this show if im on the treadmill . . . telenovelas are good because they're on every day at a convenient hour and many are only a half hour long. I now also try to do weights during the commercial breaks.
27A variation on that is Ill buy a new book and Im only allowed to read it if im on the bike, or if I get a new CD I have to break it in at the gym . . . .
I throw some movies or tv shows on my Ipod. That way I'm looking forward to something good to watch while I'm doing cardio.
