One simple way to fit exercise into your busy week is to work out at home, and if you have an elliptical or a treadmill even better.
In reality though, it is not that simple. Just living in the same house as a cardio machine or being in the same room as a set of dumbbells does not guarantee you will get exercise. Workout gear provides the challenge; you provide the motivation.
This dilemma of not exercising at home even when you have the exercise equipment has been the subject of some recent studies. The conclusion makes sense: Setting unrealistic goals, then not meeting those goals creates dissatisfaction, the dissatisfaction keeps people from working out regularly. The trick is to set realistic goals and to also realize that exercising, even at home, means you have less time for other important activities like watching TV, sleeping, or surfing the Internet. Yes, there are trade offs, but when you rally you feel so much better.
Now tell me honestly, how often do you work out at home?

I find it a lot easier to exercise at home, and I try to do so at least 4 times a week. I have an elliptical, and it does the job. Finding the time to go to the gym doesn't work for me, plus a membership is way too expensive.
1I'm in a similar situation to sonya ina. I have a manual stepper at home that I use at least 5 times per week. It's greatly increased the amount of exercise I get since I don't have a gym membership (too expensive) and I dislike jogging (which was my cardio exercise pre-stepper). Plus, being at home is great when it's raining. I think it offers me more flexibility. And, I can watch tv so I don't get too bored.
2to be honest, part of the reason that i work out as much as i do is because i figure that if i'm paying to go to the gym, then i HAVE TO GO TO THE GYM. i think that if i were to have an elliptical in my house, i would use it for a few weeks, but i don't know if it would be a regular thing for me. i could consider using it while i watched TV but that's also assuming that i had a space for it some where that i had a TV too.
3I can't do anything at my house, it's so disorganized. We have a treadmill, but I haven't used it in ages because a) it faces a wall, with your back to a door, and I get really nervous when my back is to a door. [No lie!] and b)I hate walking. Like, really. I'd must rather use an elliptical.
So I'll be getting a gym membership very soon. Getting out of the house is all the motivation I need!
4I exercise every day on my treadmill at my house. I wouldn't use a gym membership even if I had one (I don't like being around people when I sweat). Not to mention it's much more convenient for me to wake up and walk only 20 feet to exercise - and I don't have to worry about what I look like!
Also, my husband set up a tv for me, so I watch some of my favorite shows while I work.
5I like to get out of the house, so its not to hard for me to go to the gym. I don't work, so why not
6I have an elliptical machine, dumbbells, etc. in my "home gym" and I use them every single day. It's a lot more convenient for me to work out at home than it would be for me to drive to the gym at work, plus there's no time limit/sign-up sheets AND I don't have to deal with stupid New Year's Resolutiong crowds.
On the other hand, my mother in law has bought several pieces of workout equipment that she NEVER uses. I don't get it...they can't afford much, so an exercise bike was a big purchase for them. When I bought my elliptical machine, I figured I was making an investment in my health and I've used it enough times for it to pay for itself many times over.
7Going to the gym is like what ilanac13 says, because I'm paying for it so I have to go. I've dumbbells, exercise ball and yoga mat at home, but because I know I have access to them whenever I want, I somehow didn't reach out for them as often. They're just lying around collecting dust really.
Besides, going to the gym requires travel plans, and that somehow makes this little trip a little more exciting. It can also puts the idea off though. Depends on my perspective-of-the-day.
84-6 times a week :]
9i've done the gym thing, but i totally prefer working out at home. i have no excuse since i don't need to go anywhere to do it! i do a DVD for strength and i jump rope for cardio. it's a very cheap way to stay in shape - no expensive equipment, no gym membershsip!
10I only exercise at home. I've had a gym membership before and enjoyed it, sort of, but hated the guilty feeling I got when I didn't go and realized I'd lost money. Recently I bought a pass to the nearby city recreation center and found that much more cost effective and fun than the gym. Less people, more machienes, great lap pool. However, I love doing DVDs or lifting weights while watching the news. I also love working out on my Wii. I find working out at home to be more convenient and less stressful.
11I WISH i could work out at home, but there are simply too many people in our small apartment for me to even think about it (3 people, 3 bedroom apt)
There is only 1 common room and no space for exercise equipment. Frankly, I don't want to be doing Yoga or Tae Bo in front of my two male roommates anyways!
Sadly, I will have to stick with the gym and the crowds until I have my own place. Sometimes it is a good escape.
12at least 3 times a week
i have my own treadmill machine at home
at least 30mins
since cardio can get super boring sometimes.. i go to the gym as well to join the class
13My gym contract is about to end and I plan on cancelling and saving up for an elliptical or bike at home. I just can't find the time to get to the gym these days...
14I had a cheap elliptical and my husband and I used it every day (taking turns). Then it broke and we bought a nice once since we used it so much. Something happened - I think it was that the room got cluttered - and we didn't use it for a while and then it sat dormant for months. I asked hubs to tighten it up and what-not this weekend so I can start using it next week. The realistic goals thing is probably what prevented me from getting back to it all these months.
15Since part of my tuition for the last three years went to building our new gym at uni, I figured I should use it. Plus, if I had a treadmill at home, it would just get covered in junk.
16I do some yoga and pilates (is that working out?) fairly regularly at home - I don't really have the choice, I simply can't afford the gyms that are close to my work or flat. Am planning on getting a DVD, I feel stuck with the same moves and exercises.
17For me, it's a phsycological thing. The gym is where I go to get lots of space, variety, and to push my body to its maximum. My house is where I go to be safe, warm, chill and comfy; that's great but that's not my proper motivation and mindset for exercise. I'll take the gym.
18I work out at home. Over the years, I had gym memberships but it is more convenient for me at home. We have kids, I work in the day, my husband works at nite.
Actually, I created a gym in my home. I have tons of equipment including a punching bag. Also, I run several days a week, jump rope on my patio, ride my bike, and play racquetball and tennis at a local park.
19I hate working out at home. I have so much more motivation to work out harder in a gym when others around me are working out as well. It's weird I know...
20Every day.
I will join a gym eventually when its more convenient to, like when I'm out of college or when I don't have my own equipment. Right now, working out at home works for me.
21I love working out at home. I used to go to a gym mainly because it was a right down the block. But even then it was kind of annoying to deal with their hours and time limits and when it was too crowded, etc. When I was marathon training I periodically met with a really good trainer that gave me a routine that required nothing more than a set of dumbells. Now I use alot of the workouts I find in Self magazine to keep things from getting boring. I can do these while I watch tv, wearing boxerbriefs or whatever and they usually don't require much equipment if any. I run for cardio which only requires me to step out my front door, I think it's weird to commute to a gym to run plus I enjoy the outdoors. Now the money I save on gym membership can be used to pay for fun running gear and ballet classes, which is so relaxing and therapeutic and a great workout.
22We installed a home gym last year. Although I still have my gym membership, I haven't used it since August 2008. We have everything in our gym: treadmill, elliptical, rowing machine/cycle...cable machine, weights. My husband and I work out in the gym 4 - 6 days a week. I prefer to get outside for my runs but being in NY doesn't always allow it in the winter. My daily routines are on my blog at http://applecrumbles.wordpress.com Comments welcome.
