Most of us are sweating over money these days, and gyms are absorbing this worried perspiration by offering additional deals to existing members and new ones. Because the economy has hit the gyms with decreased memberships, they want to do their best to bring in and retain as many people as they can. According to the Los Angeles Times, independent gyms and national chains are playing the discount game, so be sure to speak with a manager about what can be done to reduce your fees. Here are some examples of deals the Times discovered.
- Curves: One month free, then 50 percent off the monthly membership fee through March 6.
- Gold's Gym: No enrollment fee.
- Sports Club LA: Former members were invited to return without the one-time initiation fee and no membership dues for two month.
Before you sign any contract, ask if you can sign up month-to-month and get the details about cancellation policies. Also, it never hurts to ask your gym to waive the enrollment fee.

i wish that equinox would do that or even NYSC - but neither of them do so far. the only incentives that they have are to have a $0 sign up fee - which doesn't help me at all given that i'm already a member. i go to the gym Regularly so giving up my membership to save money really isn't something that i'd want to do. maybe we should all write letters
1I just joined Urban Active in my city, and they had a year-end special, $299 for 18 months, no other fee. It's actually saving me money, because I go to the gym every day, and it keeps me from sitting on the computer and shopping online! Plus, it's an amazing 2-floor gym with a movie theater so I can work out and watch a movie at the same time.
2well.. i am a student at UGA so my gym membership is included with my tuition.. so this doesn't apply to me right now, however, i hope gyms will still be playing this "discount game" when i graduate next year!
3but Gold's is raising my monthly dues by $3!
4Ya come next month I'll be canceling my membership...
5I just cancelled my membership at 24 hour fitness. I was paying way too much, and the monthly rate they are offering now is MUCH lower than what I've been paying there for a long time. I'm a loyal member and I had been planning on sticking with that gym for years and years. I asked them to reduce my rate to the newly offered rate and they said no. I then asked them to cancel my current membership and let me sign on with the new membership price, but they refused to wave the enrollment fees, which I ALREADY PAID THEM the first time I joined. I found out that I can join LA Fitness or Gold's or Bally's for less than I was paying at 24, so I quit. If they had lowered my rate to their current offer, or let me rejoin without the enrollment fees, I would have stuck with them. But no. Absolutely no costumer loyalty there!
6animatedpunk, you may want to look at a smaller gym, because the customer service/appreciation at Bally's isn't any better than at 24 hour fitness.
