So it's January and you've vowed that 2009 will be the year you get in shape. If you're not sure how to get started, a personal trainer can teach you how to workout with all the challenges of new exercises and proper technique. Let's be financially realistic though. Unless you have a money tree growing in your backyard, it's tough to afford a ton of sessions at $30 to $50 a pop. And some trainer's time costs even more.

So why not split sessions with a friend? Many trainers will offer special small group rates, so invite one friend or maybe even a few. Not only will you save money, but having a friend join in will make you more likely to stick with it.

from experience i can tell you most trainers won't let you do this- they're kinda bitter about it and tell you that they'd rather 'concentrate on one client at a time'. which is really BS. my bf (a p.t) does it when he trains guys but other people he works with absolutely refuse. he loves it bc when 2 people train together they feed off each other's energy and become competitive and work out 200% harder than when training alone. (deets: he trains people in kickbox style circuits including punching into focus mitts and weightlifting) he suggests contacting a trainer that doesn't work for a big name gym (ballys etc) and you're likely to strike success!
1I used to have a personal trainer at Equinox and when I suggested this (because his $15 increase from $75 to $90/session was just becoming too much for me to handle) he just laughed and said no way.
He also told me that it would help if I stopped buying food and instead spent the money on personal training. I would lose weight faster and get toned quicker. Sorry dude. Not willing to go broke and starve just to train with you!
2Wow, I didn't even know you could get a one-time session with a trainer. I might look into that.
