With the start of the new year, many of us returned to our gyms, or joined new ones, to commit to fitness for 2009. Choosing a gym can be complicated. You may have to settle for a gym because of price or location, which means it may not offer you everything your fitness heart desires. As for my gym, I love that fact that there is women's area, but there are no cutting-edge cardio machines in the ladies-only cardio room: no bikes with TV screens, no TreadClimbers, and only one rowing machine. So what about your gym? What one thing would you change?

I belong to a climbing gym, which I love, but it would be even better if they offered yoga or pilates classes as well. Those two classes would help so much with the core strength that is imperative for strong climbing.
1I used to go to a gym with a sauna. It was sooooo yummy.
2My current gym doesn't have one. That's why the membership is so cheap !
Ladies weight area would be awesome. It is too intimidating to go into the free weights area which is totally dominated by guys. And 7/8AM classes would be sweet. Seems like for morning classes you have to go at 5AM or else wait until 9/10 which is seriously cutting into my work day!
3bluesweater, its totally opposite for me! all the classes are at 630, which if you figure its an hour long class + showering/getting dressed/eating breakfast + commute, I cannot do! I wish we had 5 am classes
I also would like more later classes. my gym has a lot of young working professionals and night classes would be ideal, like, post 730
4I can't do just one... but 2:
51. Better cardio machines... multiple machines are always broken (there are 6 ellipticalls and only 3 work)
2. Better air conditioner... its stuffy in the cardio room
More intense classes. I saw a website for Lifestyle Fitness gyms and their classes looked really interesting, not just "pilates", "yoga", "step aerobics" etc. They seemed to be targeted to certain goals. I'm a member of LA Fitness and I just love it there. It's got a bunch of different weight machines, TVs, sauna, and a basketball court. Although it would be nice to have some TVs in the weight area.
6That they would open at 6am instead of 7....it would make a world of difference....
71) That they would fix the steam room and turkish bath. The TB has been broken since I joined, the SR I actually managed to use once and then never again.
82) That the yoga/pilates studio had mirrors! The rooms where they have step classes do.
3) That they offered breakfast or at least opened the cafeteria earlier. It would be so sweet if I could take the early morning yoga classes, have some breakfast, then head to work.
(I work out at a country club, not a gym, and it's sweet because it has all different kinds of activities, like tennis and soccer)
If the changing room wasn't always a giant puddle! Some swimmers are so inconsiderate of others who want to use the not-dripping-wet parts of the gym!
9so far i have no complaints about my gym...
10They don't offer spin classes!
11I wished they open earlier on Sat and Sun!
12I don't have too many complaints, but I do wish our gym had a sauna. That would be niiiice. I also wish we had Precor ellipticals because they are the best...they are the only ones where you can adjust the incline AND the resistance. Oh, and I wish they offered Spinning classes. Other than that, it's a pretty good gym.
13i really wish that there were more large lockers at my gym. especially this time of year, i have a big coat and big boots and there's just never enough room for everything in the locker, and i have to fight with it.
the other thing that i would change is the TVs - i'm tired of having EVERY tv on CNN or one of those networks, or ESPN. it's just too much. sometimes it's fun to have MTV or Bravo or a girlie network on since there are a LOT of girls that work out too!
14My change isn't so much about the gym, but some of the pervy men who belong to it!
Otherwise, love the place.
15I would love:
classes (of any kind, but spinning classes esp.)
a sauna
a track
a pool
then it would be my perfect gym.
16it's cheap though, so I can't complain that much.
oh, also, if they were open later on the weekends (past six). Planet Fitness.
17the smell!!!
18A 6:15 am spin class so I could go before work!!!
19My old gym did not have a big towels , only hand towels. Which made it hard to take showers. It was cramped and hot. I just joined a new gym and I am very happy because it has all the thing that the old one did not and more.
20OH MY GOODNESS. What would I change about my gym? Hmm, I think the biggest thing is the waft of stale/sweaty air when you walk down into the dungeon of doom. The air circulation is horrible. I also wish they replace all the old run down machines-- most of them look like they're about to break. Then, add a bosu class, and I'm good to go. I already complained to the 24 hr fitness, but have never received a response. Hard to believe the Beverly Hills 24 is the worst I've ever been to!
21I love my gym but I do wish there were more classes and more varied classes- we have yoga, pilates, tai-chi and kickboxing but I wish there were spinning classes
22I go to the Ymca...i wish they had child and old people free locker rooms. its either sopping wet full of naked screaming children, or there are just groups of naked rude old ladies all over the place. they need a "people who just want to change their clothes real quick" room.
also, it would be nice if it was open on sunday morning so i could work out before i work.
23Well my gym consists of my living room, so other than classes like Yoga, Pilates, Belly Dance and Tarpees. I'd also like more weights, tread mill, and rock climbing wall.
24I know that they have started to offer classes this year, which would be great if I was interested in those, but I would long for different kinds. Unfortunately there isn't enough room for that. However, spinning bikes would be great, too. They only have those huge and uncomfortable stationary bikes.
25@blueswater- i know, i used to go to one of those gym where half the population was on steriods and the meatheads would never want to give the free-weights area any kind of room, along with unabashedly ogling at female gym members. one of the reasons i joined a women's gym.
anyway, i wish my gym had more yoga and pilates classes.
26i definitely wish there was a women's weight section.... it's so dominated by males and 1/2 the time they're just standing there talking shop so it makes me feel so puny picking up the 8lb weights. i also wish that it opened on sunday mornings (ymca) and that they had more early 5am classes so that i could be done at 6, go home to shower & eat a quick breakfast and be on my way to school.
27There are no 'butt blaster' machines.. and the only good yoga classes are on the weekends and they're always super packed so I don't go to them anymore
28These comments are making me appreciate my gym even more! I guess I wish they played younger, hipper music, I go to the suburban location of my gym, and the music is almost as bad as in a dentist's office. The downtown location has much better music, but is out of my way. Also, my location doesn't have any racquetball courts, and I love racquetball, but considering how cheap my membership is, and how much my gym has to offer as far as equipment, steam rooms and classes, I shouldn't complain!
29I go to NYSC and don't really have any complains.Great spinning class at 6:30am really fits my schedule.I usually go to the gym closest to my house so I have enough time to shower, get ready and have breakfast before work.I only wish this location would have a swimming pool.
30I have just re-joined my local virgin gym because it is SO much nicer than the cheap council gym. The council run gym really did sacrifice quality over getting the quantity of people in.
However! Virgin gym about 10 miles away has a combined spa area with jacuzzis, steam room, solarium and a piping hot sauna. Ours has a pool and sauna but they are single sex for the sauna/steam room. I'd only change that really. The rest is amazing.
31I go to a Gold's Gym, but I would much rather go to an all-women gym again. If only there was one close to where I live!
32They sometimes overbook classes, and that bugs me a lot. When I'm looking forward to a certain class and then, when I get there, the class is full and I have to do something else...
Otherwise, I'm pretty satisfied! The room with free weights could be bigger though...
33Spectra you are right on! Pre-cor ellipticals are the best. We have 6 at our gym, they don't have the moveable arms, but they are the crossramp kind.. so great.
34My biggest complaint would be that we only have 6 of them. There are about 25 of the cheaper ones. Pre-cor are the only one's that don't absolutely destroy my knees. I have bad knees from years of sports, and the other ones put a lot of stress on your knees. I wish I could afford a Pre-cor for my house!
