As a kid, I was such a huge fan of the show Full House. I loved the oldest daughter, D.J. Tanner, played by Candace Cameron, because of her cool clothes and awesome '80s hair. I was surprised to hear she had insecurities about her weight. In an interview with US Weekly she recalls, "I felt chubby. I didn't fit into a lot of my wardrobe. I know it showed on TV." Candace also said, "There were never comments for me to lose weight, even when I was a few pounds heavier than everyone else on TV." Her older brother, Kirk Cameron starred in Growing Pains, and his costar, Tracey Gold suffered from an eating disorder. Candace's parents didn't want her to feel that kind of pressure, so they didn't encourage her to lose weight.

To find out how she slimmed down read more.
In the photo on the left of her and Joey Lawrence in 1994, at her heaviest Candace weighed 132 pounds (which isn't a lot at all for someone who's 5'2"). Things changed though when she married NHL player Valerie Bure in 1996. After having three children, she decided to lose weight. Without a personal trainer or surgery, she dropped down to 110 pounds by exercising and eating less. Candace counts calories, eats tons of veggies and proteins, and lays off bread, pasta, and rice in the evenings. She enjoys wine and dessert, but not every day. In the Summer, she exercises on the beach with her hubby, running 40 minutes five days a week. In the Winter, she works out four days a week, mixing it up between Pilates and kickboxing group classes, playing tennis, bike riding, and rollerblading. It's great to see a celebrity taking care of herself by eating right and staying active.
I came upon this video clip from an old episode of Full House where D.J. is upset about her weight, overexercises, and faints at the gym. It's great that these sort of issues were addressed, even though the ending is pretty unrealistic. Issues with weight don't just go away because your Daddy tells them to.

Sorry, but video makes me lmao! I just always remember this episode. I can totally relate to it though... when I'm having flashbacks of feeling like a fat kid. It's funny, I've always looked a lot like DJ/Candace. Great know she looks beautiful and very fit!
1Was that the real laugh track? It sort of laughed in really inappropriate moments
2Oh my lord, I totally remember that episode. It was soooo after school special!
3This isn't the original laugh track, by the way. Full House was pretty good about using appropriate cues on the "Very Special Episodes."
I've always admired Candace Cameron as a child actress who grew up well. Good for her!
4haha, no way is that the real laugh track, telewyo!
5LMAO at that laugh track!
6I always thought she was beautiful at the weight she was at. She was always my favorite character on that show. I loved her sweet, round face.
7She always looked good, i loved that show... such a positive, happy, family-oriented show.. what happened to those days? Now its all sex, drugs and murder... and no family television.
8She looks great, but wow, how did I never put together the fact that she and Kirk Cameron are related!
9Weight issues? But the cutest and prettiest thing about her face is her chubby-cheek-ness!
10now that the connection has been made. I feel stupid that I never knew she was related to Kirk Cameron.
As an anorexia-recoverer, this makes me happy, that she is thin-not-too-thin, but just because she embraced a HEALTHY lifestyle. Yay Candace.
11I can't get the video to work, but I do remember that episode. I didn't know that the reason they didn't pressure her to lose weight was because her brother costared with Tracey Gold. It all makes sense to me now. But like you said, Fit, it's not like she was really "heavy"...132 lbs at 5'2" is not overweight. She looks good no matter what she weighs, IMHO.
12The laugh track makes me sad...
13She was in my pilates reformer classes this summer, and she is tiny, sweet and so cute!
14lmao the laugh track is the best part
15I'm still a Full House lover. I loved that episode so much, I even had the book! DJ still looks really good, I love you Donna Jo!
16Austerity - people used to say the same thing about me when I was younger (I had some chubby cheeks), and it drove me crazy! I used to ask my mom when they were gonna go away all the time. So, they might be cute, but they're not always well loved by the owner.
17that laugh track is just plain wrong ... you can't even concentrate on the important parts.
18132 is not heavy! she looks great at her "heaviest" and now too.
19132 is definitely not heavy! What I would do to weigh somewhere around there.. (I'm 5'2..and I weigh more than that.) She looked good in the show, and at her "heaviest" and even after she lost all the extra weight. But, it's definitely a good thing that she's healthier now.
20yeah the laugh track REALLY threw me off. I know it wasn't like that in the actual aired episode.
21i think that it's great that she was able to do this on her own rather that have to have someone tell her what she needed to do. i think that sometimes it's hard when you're growing up like she did, and to know that she accomplished a great goal of losing weight on her own, it shows that she's motivated and knows what she has to do to maintain that weight moving forward.
22There's no way she is 110 pounds. I'm way smaller than her and I'm like 105 and only an inch taller. Maybe because I have a lot of muscle, I weigh more, but whatever.
23I had NO idea Kirk Cameron and DJ were related!!!
24here's more on this story: http://www.usmagazine.com/news/how-candace-cameron-lost-her-chubby-weigh...
25I bought the mag to read this interview and it kinda pissed me off. "I run on the beach sometimes 5 days a week." 1.)Most of us vacation at the beach, but we don't live at the beach. AND 2.)Does she not have a job? Doesn't sound like it. All she does it exercise and play with her kids. Most of us would lose weight doing that, but don't have the luxury too. This issue was a Waste of money!! (not that most of them aren't...)
26I just bought the magazine too! I think she looks just beautiful and I personally find it to be inspiring. She may have a job, but not having a job and watching kids isn't exactly easy, especially when the kids have snacks and things like that.
Plus, most of us do have the time to exercise, even though we work full-time. I think it is just a matter of implementing it into our lives and daily routine.
27I not slamming stay at home moms - but I just cannot relate to her article at all.
28Emmygirl you don't have to have a beach to get in a run or a walk
I agree urban
chic. I have a full time job too but in the last year I've made some changes to how I live. It's all about working it into your daily life. Sometimes you have to make sacrifices. I've been
really focused on losing weight this past year and I've been able to lose 23 lbs by doing what they say Candace Cameron did: watch how much I eat by counting calories, eat fruits and veggies
every day, and getting in more exercise. I started out just getting a lot of walking, sometimes 4 miles a day, and gradually trying to increase my speed as I walk, then into light jogging. I
also walk whenever I can - taking the bus, post office, grocery store for small items, the bank. It certainly helps to live in an area where things are within walking distance. I eat fruits,
veggies, lean meats, and try to eat less of the "processed foods." I also cut out soda (I'll have a diet soda every so often, but 90% of my daily liquid is water). I eat chocolate all the
time and some other things that I probably shouldn't eat as much of, but I try to do it in moderation. It's been a "slowly but surely" process for me, which I think is the best way because
the goal is not just to lose the weight, but to lose it and KEEP IT OFF, which you can only do by changing your lifestyle and figuring out what is important to you. The point is, it can be
done and the formula is simple - calories in and calories out.
29tlsgirl: lol
I used to have them too a couple of years ago, and what drove me nuts
was that people felt the need to squeeze or pinch them saying your cheeks are just so cuuuute and chubby
30rivrchild - 23 pounds, that's impressive!
