It's simple: We need food to live. It gives us the energy our body needs to run properly, down to organ functionality and bone health. We're lucky to be able to choose the food we consume most of the time, yet the convenience of unhealthy foods and stress-related emotional overeating have made it easy for many of us to have unhealthy relationships with food.
Because food plays such a big role in our lives, it's on our minds more than we may realize — especially if we're on a diet. Food regularly makes it to the forefront of our thoughts: whenever our stomach grumbles, when we're bored, when we're planning what to make for dinner, or if there's a particular meal we're especially excited for. How often do you think about it?

I'd say I think about food an average amount. I think about it around mid-morning when I start to get hungry, and mid-afternoon for the same reason, and then around 5-ish when I'm thinking about what to do for dinner. Sometimes if I'm going to the store or have a bunch of dinner options I think about it a bit more. It's a nice change from when I had eating problems and would think about food literally constantly.
1too often. any hint of boredom or procrastination causes thoughts and cravings about food.
2sillygirl, im with you but that changes from time to time. i mean sometimes i have breakfast to think about lunch then dinner and other days, i dnt think about food except three times aday when im about to have my meal. depends upon boredom as sillygirl said
3so often!!! all day it seems like
4I only think about food when I'm hungry. I think about brownies...a lot.
5Too often. Working on that.
6kraw85... brownies, yes! I have days when I think about it pretty frequently (mostly around meal times), but there are other days when I have little time to eat it, let alone think about it! Overall though, thinking about food makes me smile :]
7I'll think about it whenever I'm hungry (every few hours), whenever I'm making up a grocery list (more often than most people, I'd imagine), whenever I'm planning to cook/bake something, and whenever I'm craving something... Maybe more often than most people, but I don't think it consumes (ha!) me...
8I think about food alot especially when I am hungry. I think about the food that I always wanted to make. I also think about food that I miss and haven't eaten for a long time.
9All the time, I need to find something else to think about!
10I think about it very rarely...usually about a half hour before I make dinner, I think about what to make and if I have the ingredients for it or whatever. I also think about it when I'm at the store (duh) because I have to figure out what we need for the week and what I have plenty of. Lately I've been thinking about it more because I've got to bake cookies and make candy for Christmas! But yeah, I actually very rarely get hungry, so I guess I only think about food a handful of times a day.
11All the time. It's not the only thing I think about anymore (thankfully), but I love baking and cooking new dishes, so I spend a lot of time planning my projects. I also think a lot about what I want to eat and how to balance the healthy and the indulgent on my plate.
12It really depends. On days that I work I plan out what I'm going to eat for the next day the night before. On those days I only think "I'm Hungry!!" and then I already have what I'm going to eat in mind. But on my days off work and my "cheat day" I use 1x a week I think about food whenever I start to get hungry.. I will plan out what I am going to eat for the next meal. I used to have an ED so this is major progress for me!!!!
13I'm on a new medication that has totally annihilated my appetite. When I get hungry, I'm pretty hungry, but I just don't have the desire as much. Food 2x a day is fine with me
14Regularly. I plan and prepare all our meals. I am deliberate about preparing healthy, well-rounded, nutritious meals, and that takes some planning. Also, I make sure we're well-stocked with healthy foods and ingredients, and again, that takes planning and effort. That stuff doesn't happen by itself. It's all about deliberation.
15Probably a little above average, but not in a good way.
Eating for me can get to be a hassle, because I have to plan EXACTLY what I'm going to eat and WHY I should eat it. Usually I'll spend a lot of time trying to balance calories in my head ...if I eat a salad for lunch, then I might be able to have some yogurt; but if I eat a sandwich with a veggie burger, I'll need to eat some fruit instead.
Fortunately, after the meal is over, I usually have enough to do that I don't have time to think about food!
16I have the same problem as SillyGirl--I think about foot way too often. Sometimes it seems like I look forward to eating more than other activities, which is sad.
17i think about food alll day long!!! its so depressing
18I love eating, I'm watching my weight, I food journal, and cooking and baking are my main hobbies, so I basically think about food ALL THE FRICKIN TIME!! Dammit. Not sure what to do about that.
19i find that on the days that i go home and i know that my fiance isn't going to be there - i think about food a LOT more. i typically don't think about it TOO much
20It really feels like it's all day. It starts as soon as I sit down at my desk, I think about what's for lunch. Then I think about, what snacks I'll be having after lunch, because I know I'll be hungry. Then I think about what I'm having for dinner. Of course, if I have a bunch of crap to do at work, I think of food less, so I've been trying to keep busier (maybe with actual work, ha!)
21well, to be honest, i think about food all day long — i even dream about it!
22I don't think I think about it THAT much. There have been many times/periods of time I've thought about it a lot more, primarily when I was deep into an eating disorder. I am working on recovering now, so I'm eating more. But when I was hungry and/or low on energy (very low blood sugar) I would think about it often, but do anything to distract myself. Mostly the question was "to eat or not to eat" instead of what I'm going to eat that day. I think I am mostly past that now. I usually focus more on what I think my body is craving more than what my mind is. And I am sure everyone at certain times has eaten when they are bored or sad. For me, its more about boredom when I want to snack, than emotional problems, because when I am sad or upset I'm never hungry.

24Usually only around 11 oclock I start thinking about lunch then dinner time and usually later at night I'm bored and want a snack! Not too bad, when I was in my more frequent eating days, I pretty much thought about food all day. Not fun.
25always!!
26all day hahaha i love food
27all day!!! it seems like while I'm eating I'm planning on my next meal, sometimes its annoying, but I am a avid list maker and structure helps me get through the day so I think that helps me with a busy week.
28Unfortunately, having had a problem with an eating disorder, I think about food in the opposite way: stressing about what I've eaten or what I'm going to have to eat. Right now my comfort zone woudl be eating a lot less. Be thankful if you have healthy eating habits!
29Somewhat frequently sometimes. But it's mostly thinking about what I might have for dinner depending on what we have in the house especially just in case we don't have something I thought we did.
30I think about it almost constantly-- unless i'm distracted by something else I have to do.
I think about it so much because I used to be anorexic, so now I am a little obsessed.
It has gotten a little better, but it REALLY SUCKS being chubby and an ex-anorexic, so that makes it worse too. Now, I am a binger.
What I wouldn't give to NOT have an eating disorder. All of you who have a normal relationship with food-- you have no idea how good you have it.
31100 time a day LOOOL
32All the time! Sometimes I feel like I have a somewhat unhealthy relationship with food...
33I love food, I plan every single piece that goes into my mouth, I count calories and foof journal like crazy and I usually have my next 5-6 meals planned out ahead of time. I'm big on structure and I think that's why I do this, I'm also getting married in less than 6 months and that's why I food journal and count calories but it can be a hassle when going out with friends because it takes me forever to order a meal!
34food journal*
35I think about it all the time. I wish there was a way stop thinking about it. I must say though that if I don't eat fairly regularly I get really shaky then eat almost everything I can get my hands on to get my blood sugar up.
36I think this is so great. I think about food all the time too, whether it's calories, what I'm craving, what I should or shouldn't eat, etc. Sometime I think it's not normal, but then I read all these posts and realize other people are like this too. It's nice to know.
37I think about food pretty much all the time! Ah ha ha! It's just so damn delicious! I certainly LIVE TO EAT not EAT TO LIVE! ha ha!
