Riding a bike is a childhood milestone. Once you master the technique, you'll know how to ride for life. Cycling requires left-to-right balance, like walking, so it is easy to learn.
Although more challenging, surfers and snowboarders turn their bodies to the side using front-to-back balance. This type of balance inspired Michael Killian, inventor of the Sideways Bike. Also called a Snowboard Bicycle, you sit on it with both legs on one side, similar riding sidesaddle on a horse. Killian says that the front-to-back balance, combined with the drifting ability of the independent wheels "affords you tremendous grace and motion. It's dance-like. It's mesmerizing and entertaining."

Both handlebars can steer independently so it's not exactly a cinch to learn, but once you perfect this type of balance, it can make you a better snowboarder. They're not in production yet, but when they hit stores, would you be interested in giving this Sideways Bike a go?

It looks really cool, but I'd definitely have to learn how to ride it first. It looks a lot like riding a unicycle, but a little easier.
1I imagine the view from the side will look a bit like a crab walking back to the sea.
2That looks pretty awkward. I think I'll stick to a regular bike...
3This is incredible. Not too practical but cool nonetheless. I don't know if my readers at http://blog.kgsbikes.com would want a bike like this but I am glad you showed a video as it really explains how that rear steering works.
A snowboarder would probably like it because that sideways balance thing would be important to have developed.
4it looks weird, i dont get the point of it. i know how 2 ride a bike and a snowboard but i dont see why anyone would combine them
NONSENSE
5The tiny wheels, the sideways-ness...that's a total crash waiting to happen for me!
6This bike is crazy!! I am a snowboarder, but that still looks like quite a challenge.
7I wouldn't want to try that. Weird.
8looks interesting, but i'm not sure how it would help with snowboarding other than balance, and even that seems slightly askew. when boarding you focus on going from toe-side to heel-side, with this the focus wouldn't seem to be your feet as much as your core, definitely prevelant in snowboarding, but the obvious first step, something you already know if you know how to board... not sure how this would help you improve... looks fun though!
9those wheels are tiny!
10I'd maybe use it where there aren't any cars, but I wouldn't risk a main road.
that's kind of interesting and cool in it's own way. i can't even think about seeing someone here in NYC riding that - but i suppose that there's something to be said about being in suburbia on this.
11yes, I want to try it!
12That looks awesome! I really enjoyed reading this. Glad that I stumbled across your blog!
13I want to try it! It looks really fun, definitely different.
