Do you guys remember me telling you about Alli the first OTC Diet pill approved by the FDA? The one that causes anal leakage? Remember?
Personally, I was hoping it would never really happen, but it has been announced the pills will go on sale on June 15th, 2007 at drugstores nationwide. I am curious if I am the only one that thinks the FDA should focus a little more on tainted foods hitting shelves in grocery stores than giving us another reason not to exercise and eat healthy. Oh wait; Alli claims that it’s only for you if you can commit to eating more sensibly and getting more physically active. Why can't we commit to doing that without anal leakage? Maybe I am a cynic, but what do you guys think about it?

Diet pills are a waste of money, and harmful to our bodies. It's so funny Fit, all diet pills have their "eating sensibly and moderate exercise" disclaimers.
1I won't be buying it! Another gimmick, except with anal leakage. I am happy eating healthy and slowly losing weight, at least i know it will stay off and i won't leave a trail on the metro seat. lol
2I'm not 100% sure what the process is for getting drugs from creation to the store shelves in the US, but I know in Canada it's a long and well studied process. Most side effects happen in less than 1% of the control study group, and even if it happens to 1 person out of 1000 in the study, they must put it down as a side effect. Unfortunately, unlike most drugs I've had to research for school, there was no information as to exactly how many people were effected by this side effect.
Because it is a drug that works in the digestive tract, it's going to cause GI disturbances, leading to the 3.2 to 5.4% of people who get side effects in this area. It doesn't break it down into what they end up with though.
A tip: If side effects of a drug ever worry you, go to the Doctor or Health Professionals area of the drug's website which is usually listed along the top or the bottom of the page. This gives you far more information about the drug.
3ROTFL:! Yea, and smelling like crap won't attract anyone, but hey, some people would do anything to be skinny, not my style.

oops
5I'll give it a shot. Anal leakage don't bother me! That probably only happens if you eat a lot, or a high-fat meal.
And Jhuck, I'm sure that's not the same process that the U.S. follows, the FDA doesn't really care about us here.
6Honestly, as someone who struggles with their weight, I might give it a try. If I experienced side effects, which I rarely have with any drug, I'd stop. But there are times when eat right + exercise more just does not get it done - I've been fighting the battle since I was 13 years old and I've tried everything from Slim Fast to Weight Watchers to starving myself. It is not only a physical struggle to battle weight problems, but it takes a huge emotional toll and impacts every area of your life, most importantly, the way you see and present yourself to others. If someone could give me a pill to change all that and let me focus on other areas of my life, that would be really nice. I know it will never happen that way, but I'm willing to try almost anything.
7So what's the bulbous blue thing in the package?
8A plug for the 'anal leakage'?
lol Tygr, that was what I was thinking! I don't think I would ever try this! I already have body issues and anal leakage doesn't need to be added to the list!
9Another excuse for people to take the easy way out and not address the real reasons why they are overweight.
10I hate diet pills. They are a total crock.
It's not that hard: eat fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, good oils. Take a walk with your family or take the stairs instead of the elevator. How is that hard? If you can afford diet pills you can afford the things I mentioned above. Of course there are exceptions, but for the majority of people: they are scared.
Ugh. End rant. I guess I'm a cynic, too, today
I don't necessarily think these pills are a good idea, but RebeccaAdele its not as easy as you say. Those things might help an already thin person stay thing, but that is not enough to help an overweight person lose weight. Honestly, it is hard. Losing weight is something you have to put work into, and unfortunately, a lot of people are not willing to do that and would rather take pills like this....probably because their self esteem is low from thin people continually telling them that "it's not that hard."
11*thin not thing
12disclaimer: I may be in a bad mood today, so comments I make may appear meaner than they actually are.
13hey purple sugar, from someone who got tired of hearing "its not that hard" i agree with you, but it really isn't that hard. I am doing those little things now, and no i don't have smoe dramatic weight loss, but walking up the escalators instead of standing, walking to work the long way and home the long way, and eating healthier and smaller portions and sure enough I am losing it. If I want to lose alot i will have to do more i know, but right now i am adjusting to my new lifestyle and it isn't that hard-somedays it is, and the next couple of days i will be cravin chocolate if you catch my drift, but I bought a 70% cocoa dark chocolate bar the other day and will let one square slowly melt in my mouth to appease it...and that is it. just one, and that is all, and that, i can do!
14Yeah I agree that the FDA should be spending more time being concerned with the food on the store shelves then something that will make me "crap my pants"
Im all set with that . That goes to show how stupid our goverment is and how much they care
about the bottom line , no matter who or how many people it hurts. Wow being cynical is catching on...hehe
15I say not cool simply because the OTC release of Alli means that San Francisco women's restrooms will have absolutely no toliet paper in them at all AND there will be very unpleasant surprises when you open the stall doors.
Yeah, I am thinking self-peservation here, I don't like nasty public bathrooms. Like when the cabbage soup diet was big, women's restrooms suffered.
16Like Kaciegrrl, I might try it. I know that it's not a magic pill (nothing is) but I can take all the help I can get. Anal leakage usually happens when one takes in too much of the product (like chips with Olestra) or when one eats a high fat meal while on the product (like Xenical).
And, no, RebeccaAdele, it's NOT that simple for some people. I eat less, and better, than most of my skinny friends, but I still weigh a lot more than them. And body-wise, I look exactly like my mother, who looks exactly like her mother did.
If it were really that simple, everyone would do it.
17We talked about the oil spotting in one of my nutrition classes. I'd much rather try to eat healthy and exercise than have to deal with oil leaking out of my body at random times. Gross.
18I see my 18 year old eating disordered friend or daughter or whatever buying it and that makes me sick...
19oil leaking out? whaaat.
20YIKES
21Not cool! It's just another excuse. What's up with all these 'Get Thin Quick' gimmicks?!
22The oil leakage is because the fat goes undigested through the body. NOT normal!!! If this only occurs when you eat something high fat, then that defeats the purpose for taking it. So, what's the point? Perhaps, in some twisted sort of way, it creates an aversion to eating fatty foods while you are on it because you don't want to "suffer the consequences."
