Whether you're an exercise newbie or a fitness buff, jumping rope is a great option for fun, quick, and effective cardio. Though a jump rope is one of the simplest pieces of equipment available, shopping for one isn't easy because they come in various lengths and the quality can differ depending on materials used.
You'll find that ropes differ in handle size and cord weight; I recommend staying away from ropes made of cloth or leather. Generally, beaded ropes are supposed to give you the best aerobic workout. Speed ropes are the lightest type of rope, but I've found they can be difficult to control when you're a new jumper. I prefer slightly heavier ropes made of plastic.
See some jump rope options and learn how to determine the proper length of your jump rope when you read more.
While standing on the center of the cord, the handle tips should reach your armpits. If the handles are up by your ears, the rope is too long for you! You can also jump with your rope to determine if it's the proper length: If the cord doesn't touch the floor, the rope is too short; if it lands in front of you, it's too long. All of the ropes featured below are adjustable, so you can shorten the ropes if needed.

I love jumping rope!
1I very recently read somewhere that you should go with a leather jump rope; otherwise the rope "does some of the work for you". I wonder if this has to do with momentum, or if it is accurate info. Either way, I went out and bought a leather one that seems to work pretty well.
2this is really interesting. i want to do these, but i can't imagine the people living below me would appreciate me jumping rope at all.
3I also have a leather rope and I don't see what's so bad about them. I like the weight of mine and it has nice ball-bearings in the handles so it moves nicely. What's so great about a beaded rope? To me, the beaded ones feel kind of chintzy and they don't really do it for me.
4What about the jump ropes with the plastic cylinders that are over the cords? Are those the beaded ones? What are they good for?
5good way of doing cardio.. intense though..
6i just bought a jump rope (I am a newbie) and i was wondering what the proper way to jump is -- with both feet together or alternating feet (kind of looks like you're running)? thanks!
7I love jumping rope since I was a little girl. I always thought that it was one of the totalliest greatest games that was thought up for a girl.
8anz2102...you can do either style, but jumping with both feet together will give you a tougher workout. If you want to start off by doing the alternate-foot style and then move up, maybe that'd be a good solution for you.
