When Mariah Carey tried to get out of a champagne toast with Ellen DeGeneres as a guest on Ellen, she initially reacted to the host's persistence by exclaiming that champagne is fattening. When Ellen proceeded to hand her a glass of bubbly to toast to Mariah "not being pregnant" (a trickster, that Ellen!), Mariah tried another route and said that it was too early in the day for alcohol.
The first thing that comes to mind when I think of champagne isn't the word fattening, as it apparently is for Mariah, but the singer does have a point. When you're attending one holiday party after the next and clinking glasses with everyone you know, those fun servings of bubbly can add some serious calories to the other holiday fare. It's OK to toast the season with a little champagne, but control your calories by drinking this beverage in moderation. One 4.1 fl. oz. glass contains 91 calories (similar to a serving of white wine), while an entire 25.4 fl. oz. bottle has 495 calories.

I don't think one glass of champagne is going to cause Mariah Carey to blow up and gain weight. Lame.
My holiday problem has always been the appetizers, like cheese and crackers, which I totally can't resist.
1This is seriously lame, I hardly think a few glasses of champagne are the main cause of holiday-season weight gain . . .
2Well, they do add up and champagne in particular has a lot of sugar.
3well i guess if you think about it - it does have cals - but it's a celebratory thing so it's not like you're going to sit there and chug a whole bottle every night.

8I don't take diet advice from Mariah Carey...she's one of the biggest yo-yo queens out there. Plus, she's about as intelligent as a bag of rocks, so yeah. A glass of champagne ain't gonna kill you...it's better than a white Russian or a big jumbo margarita or something.

10An occasionaly glass of champagne is fine (unless alcohol in general is an issue, I suppose). An occasional anything is fine. They probably would have had two sips for effect and put it down.

12I think 90 calories is totally reasonable for an alcoholic beverage. She must be pregnant, I'm sure she would've had a sip of champagne if she weren't.

20SHe is a weirdo, that is my only explanation. One sip won't make her fat OR harm her baby. Blah blah blah, Mariah just wants us talking about her again. WHICH WE ARE.
21On the one hand, I agree that a sip or two of champagne isn't going to harm a baby or make her fat, but on the other hand, what is the big freaking deal if she doesn't want it? I'm so tired of people foisting food/drink on me and getting all bent out of shape if I don't want it right at that moment.
22I love Ellen and am sure that she never meant any harm, but the whole situation makes me uncomfortable. I don't believe Mariah Carey is an alcoholic, but what if she was? You never know, especially in the celebrity world, who may have a secret drinking problem. Pressuring someone to drink shouldn't be a joke.
23that's stupid. champagne is one of the lowest calorie alcoholic beverages out there.
24Mariah Carey loves champagne, it's never too early for her to drink a glass of it and she's never refused it before so I truely believe there's a good reason she refused to drink it this time. Of course saying it's fattening is stupid, but it's pretty obvious she wasn't prepared and didn't know Ellen was going to do this. If she's pregnant and doesn't want to tell it, she has the right to make up stupid reasons, nobody should be pressured to tell such things on national tv. And I agree with lindsaybriggs, what if she had drinking problems, you never know, she might be working hard on it and here is Ellen offering her a glass of her favorite drink. I didn't find this funny..
