I have been a vitamin skeptic for years, having experimented with different types of supplements off and on over the years. I took folic acid when I decided I wanted to get pregnant, and I encourage my mother to take calcium since the supplements have been shown to help women over 65 maintain healthy bone density. The more I read about vitamins, the more nutritionist and dietitians say to eat your vitamins and that the body processes micronutrients and antioxidants better from food. Additionally, vitamin deficiencies are not really a problem here in the US rendering supplements unnecessary.

A compilation of studies on the benefits of vitamins A, C, and E indicate that they don't prevent cancer or heart disease. Some studies have even found that taking vitamins may shorten your life. Ahhh . . . the bitter ironies.
I know we are all trying to be as healthy as we can be and I am wondering your stance on nutritional supplements. So tell me . . .

Right now I am taking Vitamin A once a day. It was recommended by my eye doctor for night blindness.
1I used to take the One A Day Women Weight Loss multivitamin. The stats on the bottle, though, showed that I was taking waaaay over the daily intake level on a lot of scary metals.
I take a multivitamin every day just to make sure that I'm meeting my requirements of vitamin b12/iron/zinc as a vegetarian. I do make sure that I have a healthy and well balanced diet but I like to make sure that I'm covering all my bases.
2My doctor recommended calcium pills for me since I didn't get a lot of dairy, but I stopped taking them - partially out of laziness, partially because I've been better about calcium.
3It makes me sad that everyone buys in to these studies, both the ones that claim vitamins are bad for you and the ones that make outrageous claims...if you really understood them you would see the flaws in them immediately.
4There is a place for vitamins, unfortunately the food that we eat, no matter how "healthy" you eat, does not contain the nutrients it once did before we started adding chemicals and depleting the contents of our soil. I doubt that your average person gets the correct amount of nutrients from their diet. And I know almost everyone does not get enough EFAs.
I have seen vitamins and supplements do really amazing things for people, but you have to use the correct kind. If your label has a million "other ingredients" whose names you can't recognize or even pronounce, then you aren't helping yourself. The industry isn't regulated enough and they can get away with too much. Look for food-based, natural vitamins for the best results.
There are some amazing, cutting edge companies out there--New Chapter, Country Life, Enzymatic Therapy, etc. that put a lot of research into what they do and area highly respected.
I take a multivitamin every day, plus Acidophilus and an Echinacea supplement (which may or may not work, but makes me feel better about cold season).
5I try to take a multivitamin everyday. I just can't see that on a typical day, I get the vitamins I need, so that is my reason why.
Oh, and pretty soon water will cause your life to be shorter. Seems like everything does, nowadays.
6I completely agree with pixiedust. Many vitamins are full of chemicals and dyes that aren't doing any good for your body. Buying the brands she listed, or even going to a trusted organic store and browsing their products are a great idea. Multivitamins are great but the popular One a Day does nothing good for your body.
7There are some vitamins that really should be taken. For example, vitamin D, especially in the winter (I live in Canada...).
As well, for those studies suggesting that some vitamins may shorten your life: I have read quite a few of the journal articles related to vitamin E, and it isn't just taking any amount that may do harm, it is taking excessive amounts (over the recommended daily intake).
8I take Flintstone's Vitamins along with trying to eat 3 meals and snacks in between. I don't really pay attention to exactly what I eat, so I like that the Flintstone tablets I got at least have Vitamin C so I don't worry about how I'm not drinking enough juice.
9I'm currently taking Vitamin D and I'll take C when getting sick. I can't do multivitamins, though, because I am allergic to zinc.
10I don't take any. I try to eat a varied diet and if my doctor ever prescribed and/or suggested one, I might take them, but for now, I feel like it's a little unnecessary.
11I live in upstate New York, where it's seriously short on sunshine for a large portion of the year, so vitamin D is a must. I take calcium supplements because I don't eat much dairy. I take fish oil because I don't eat much fish, and I take a basic multi, but I don't take mega doses of anything..
12I take a multi-vitamin every day. And since it's flu season, I'm also taking a daily Vitamin C supplement.
13I take:
1 women's multivitamin
1 cod liver oil
1 iron pill
2 bottles of water with glutamin in them
14Forget about vitamins per se, a reason to take a multivitamin is that all women of childbearing age should be taking folic acid daily. Daily folic acid is likely good for everyone, and certainly no harm to anyone.
Calcium is also necessary for basically all women, although that's a separate supplement.
Personally I also take fish oil, but folic acid and calcium are the critical things.
15I have a multivitamin, iron, and CalD that I take most days. At least five days a week to supplement my diet.
16I've tried taking all kinds of adult daily vitamins and they always make me puke. So I stick with flintstones, too, bengal.
17I used to take a mutli-vitamin once a day, but it just never felt right. So now I choose exactly which vitamins and minerals I take. Calcium/D, Magnesium/Zinc, C, E, Iron, Fish Oil, and B12/Folic acid every day. I feel tons better, too.
18I take fish oil everyday with the RDA of Omega 3, 6 & 9. Everything else I should really be getting from my diet!
19I have never taken vitamins, though right now I am taking prenatal vitamins in preparation for pregnancy (hopefully!)
20I take a daily vitamin b/c I am sexually active and could get pregnant at anytime (on BC, but you never know!). I do not get enough folic acid in my diet so I take a vitamin b/c it is vital to the fetus' growth in the first month (usually when you don't know you are pregnant).
I'm thinking about starting to take a fish oil pill b/c I never eat fish and don't get all the Omegas that I should.
21I take a daily multi with folic acid for the same reason as kikidawn. I also take two calcium/magnesium pills before bed as recommended by a sleep specialist. (They are great for muscle relaxation!) I take a b vitamin suppliment, fish oil and vitamin D sometimes. Who knows if these all work, but I figure it's cheap health insurance...
22I used to take them but then a microbiologist told me I was just making my urine expensive.
23I only take my multi on weekdays since I heard that there should be a break.
24Yes, I do.
25Yes, vitamins help me ease cravings..
26I used to take a multivitamin every morning after breakfast (Women's One A Day). I ended up vomiting about 50% of the time, which meant my other meds that I take in the morning weren't digesting. I have to get my blood levels checked once a year anyway, so my doctor told me to go off the vitamins and let her know if there was a problem. Its not as hard as people think to eat healthy, and your doctor would know better than anyone what supplements you should be taking.
27I take a multivitamin made from whole, raw foods and also cod liver oil. I believe it's beneficial, and even if it really does no good...well, we all know how powerful the placebo effect can be
28Vitamin C during the cold weather, multivitamin with low vitamin A amount when veggies and fruit are not in season (there are some in shops, but they're plastic) and calcium+D now just to see if it is good for me. so i take 3 vitamin pills a day now, and you know, i usually am sick almost every month but so far so good - no colds or flues
i guess it's really working.
p.s. just bought kiwi today, and almost broke my spoon on it... not ripe at all!
29I don't take the women's one a day (although I used to 'til I realized how horrible all those ingredients are). I see a naturopath, and all the vitamins/supplements I take are prescribed for my specific needs - esp. as a vegetarian. In addition I take flax seed oil capsules to get omega 3's and 6's that are difficult to get in my regular diet.
30I eat a very highly nutritious diet, but I know that I don't eat enough fish, so I take a fish-oil pill every day as well as a calcium + Vitamin D supplement to ensure that I get plenty of calcium. I'm very active, so I need extra calcium in my diet to keep my bones strong and my blood calcium levels at the right level.
31The problem with taking vitamins is that while they may contain 100% the RDA for a micronutrient, human bodies aren't designed to take in that much in one sitting. Most of the vitamin won't be absorbed, so as someone else said... it just results in expensive urine.
Taking vitamin D if you don't get much sunlight is a good idea, but it's better to split the vitamin and take each half a few hours apart. It gives the body a chance to absorb more of the nutrient, so less of it goes to waste.
32Actually, right now I take Centruim Performance, which has ginko and stuff like that in it. I also take Fish Body Oil fron GNC. I used to take calcium supplements because my bones hate me, but try to fill in the gap with more dairy and exercise.
I can usually tell when I forget to take my pills - I feel very run-down and irritated.
33When I didn't take vitamins, I bruised easily and never slept well. Vitamins and dedicated exercise have helped me a great deal. And fish oil, which I also take daily...
34I'm surprised by how many people take fish oil every day. every day seems like a whole lotta fish oil!
35I try to take fish oil pills and these really yummy, gummy multivitamins, by Vitafusion. Yay gummy vitamins. I don't always take them, though; I get lazy.
36i take a multi-vitamin & a flax seed oil supplement (for omega-3s since i don't like fish) each day, & sometimes i have a calcium chew. i started because a nutritionist recommended them when i was training for my first half marathon & then just continued.
37I have never taken vitamins but I am starting to think I should
38I take a liquid multivitamin with iron everyday. I also take flax seed oil. I am a vegetarian that also does not consume any dairy. I've been taking Shaklee brand vitamins ever since I was little and honestly they're the best.
39I take a multi vitamin and a fish oil capsule every other day. I do it for insurance because I eat pretty well and don't want to over dose on vitamins that I don't need. Also the week of my period I take an extra B complex vitamin.
40I don't take it because I feel there isn't a need to.
41I take one every other day and I take a B vitamin tab or a berocca when I am particularly run down, overworked or stressed.
42"Yes. I take a vitamin to fill in my nutritional gaps when I am not eating well"
Which is most of the time. :\
