Shin splints are an awful, jabbing, throbbing pain in your lower legs that's often caused by running, but people who hike, play basketball, or do other vigorous activities that involve your legs can also suffer from this piercing ailment. After making New Year's Resolutions to start exercising, many newbies experience shin splints, but changing up your routine, like switching to running on a treadmill after running outside, can bring them on too. Since it's a common issue, tell me . . .

left big dents in my shinbones! However some supportive trainers and
muscle-strengthening hockey and I'm fine, even running on pavements these days
1i ran on uneven pavement (w/o stretching after) and i got the worst shin splints ever!! now i wont run on pavement or a treadmill because its too rough on my legs...i run on the elliptical and i walk at a high incline on the treadmill and i still get a great workout thats not hard on my shins
2I always stretch after running so I guess that lessens my chance of injury. I've never suffered from shin splints and I've been running for almost 5 years.
3Shin splints are the WORST! Treadmills these days are much better then the older generations. I don't get them now from treadmills but when I started running on them... YIKES! I hated walking to class.
4No thank God.
5I never get shin splints but I do get side stitches when I run on the treadmill sometimes.
6I've heard they can be VERY painful, but luckily I've never had them.
7They're so awful! I used to get them all the time, and luckily that's stopped, but I got them a couple of weeks ago chasing after a friend's dog in ballet flats. Painful!
8I get them all the time. I'm flat footed and I love running, which is not the best combination. I finally invested in a good pair of sneakers, which helps, but doesn't cure them.
9i would suggest getting insoles. they cured mine completely
10Ugh - I had them early on in my training for my half marathon. Really frustrating! In an odd turn of fate, though, I dislocated my kneecap and had to spend 2 weeks on crutches which actually gave my shin splints some time to heal.
I also ended up with stress fractures in my forearms (basically the same thing as shin splints) from teaching my pole dancing fitness class and going from teaching 1 class a week to 4 classes!
11I used to get bad shin splints running track in high school - so bad that I could barely walk. My track coach made me walk laps around the track on my heels with my toes pointed straight up... it seemed to help, because they finally went away!
12Oddly, I've never had them, even when I was running 10+ miles a day. I tend to get tendonitis and ITB syndrome, but no shin splints.
13Yep, and it's so incredibly painful. I sometimes even get them from walking.
14Oh, definitely, and they hurt like hell. I'm an Irish Dancers, and I danced once, unwisely, on concrete. I had shin splints haunt me for over a year after that, necessitating that I tape them before every workout. I'm so over careful, now!
15urgh, shin splints = SO painful
16So, how exactly can you keep from getting them?
17In the past, yes. When I was in high school, I was on the cross country team. Usually by the end of the season, I suffered from some degree of shin splints.
18oh man. I got them back when I was running. So after my 5K I took a month off to let my legs heal. Then when I went back I had other problems, like achillies tendinitis, and plenty of other pains. So now I can't run. or do anything. walking even hurts sometimes. But I love how my dr takes his sweet time refering me to anyone.
19omg - i've had them and they SUCK! when i used to play field hockey, i think that all of us at one point or another had them and we would be in such pain. now i really try to stretch and do everything to avoid getting them since it's really prohibitive of working out when you're suffering .
20I have them right now. I just started an intense workout program with my mom, and we're training for a half-marathon. My shins have been killing me, so I'm walking instead of running, and I actually just looked up a bunch of stretches to help my shins heal.
21yeah, how exactly you can avoid them?
i've never had one, seems like my legs are quite tough
and i jog, quite intensely
22i am just recovering from one...i worked out today and i was fine so i think its gone. i love jogging outside on the asphalt road, and i jog pretty slowly so idk how i even got it. anyone have any tips on how i can prevent them?
23miss meow- do you have a link to those stretches? thanks
