Exercise can do more than just benefit the body; it can also offer an emotional release as well as provide much-needed self time. A contestant on The Biggest Loser cries every time she sprints on the treadmill. I have had Pilates clients ball their eyes out as they rediscover their long lost deep abs post C-Section, or out of frustration over their pain. I'd be lying if I said I have never been moved to tears in a workout; some of the tears have been for the joy of movement and some have provided a much-needed release.
I am curious: has this ever happened to you?

I did earlier this week. Not from the act of working out itself, but it helped me release emotions over certain issues I was bottling up.
1I've cried while running before. Several times. Ususally its because a boyfriend made me mad.
2I cried at the end of my last 25K race . . .does that count?
3I've never, even though i'm an extremely emotional person.
4no - i can't say that i've ever felt the urge to cry during a workout. that's just something that's not in my DNA i don't think.
5I also am quite an emotional person generally, but I've never cried during a workout.
6Never.
7erg workouts.
8They are mean and will make you cry.
I've cried a few times while working out. Mostly it happens when I'm so frustrated that the only thing I can do is cry. haha
9I've cried a couple times running outdoors on my own, but it wasn't because of physical pain/release, more emotional ...
10I've cried while running, but not because of the workout, because of personal issues, which were probably why I was running in the first place
11Well, I wouldn't call it working out. But when I was a ballerina I would occasionally tear up while dancing because the toe shoes were so painful. And then I would look down and my blood would be seeping through the pink satin. So yes, it was warranted.
12Never.
13I cried once during swimming - I was on my college swim team and my coach was a distance swimmer and would make us swim a 3300 (2 miles) for time twice a season. Once I started hallucinating, and one time I cried for the last fifteen minutes because I was so tired.
14I cry on the most random occasions but never while exercising....working out usually puts me in a better mood.
15Now that I think about it yeah, I was being emotional and went for a walk and as I cried I said: 'physical activities are supposed to make you feel good, why am I not feeling good'.
16I cried at the end of a three-day certification training in group fitness for yoga and pilates. We had been exercising non-stop all weekend. During the final rest period I suddenly felt tears.
17I've cried at the end of a couple marathons.
18I cried the first time I ran a mile without stopping. As UrbanBohemian said, I've also found that exercise can help me release emotion about other things I've been bottling up.
19I'll admit I cried a couple of times during workout because I loathe it..
20When I started taking yoga again after having my first kid, at the end of class I would find tears in my eyes. I was so filled with joy. Happy to have a baby and a body that moved. It was weird. I am not really much of crier.
21Cried on the elliptical this morning - BUT it was only a tear or two and was because i was watching a really climactic movie
I also have cried once or twice out on a run but for emotional reasons. When I was told my grandmother died for example, the first thing I did was strap on my running shoes and hit the trails and just let the tears explode - when the run was over I was able to gain some composure cause both the run and cry were such a great release.
22I cried after my first marathon. I've also cried running outdoors. I try not to do it at the gym though. ha ha
23after a boxing training session i cried. my boyfriend is my trainer, and he is extremely good at it... he's really big on digging deep within yourself to keep going when your body wants to quit. mind over body sort of thing. it was one of my first training sessions with him and the second he said we were done, i crumpled into a pile on the floor, completely weak and shaking.. amazed at what i had been able to do and just feeling the weakness (and strength) of my body. i don't know why but i sat there and cried! felt good though.
24OMG yes...one time when a trainer I was working with tried to get me to do boxing. I was totally uncomfortable and felt like a big 'ol prissy pansy (he kept telling me to "hit harder" and "get into it") and I was like, I'm so not into this we have to stop. When he went back to put the gloves away, I burst into tears.
I pulled it together by the time he got back though, so I thought he would never know. Turns out he read about it on my blog later that week! He apologized but it really wasn't his fault, he didn't insult me or anything, I was just frustrated to the point of tears. It happens!
25i've cried after running but usually because of a) happiness that it's over and that i did so much without stopping and b) because i was in pain
26I don't usually cry during workouts...I dunno, I'm just not that emotional when it comes to stuff like that. I've been in some serious physical pain during exercise, but I have a high tolerance for pain, so it doesn't usually make me cry.
27the only time i've ever cried was on the elliptical machine and i had just finished reading this amazing book. i kept worrying ppl would notice, but it just looked like i was wiping sweat from my eyes.
28no...but i've wanted to
29Never, nor do I think I ever would. However, there was one Pilates class that was so grueling that when the teacher said, "For our last move" I was so happy I thought about crying! ha ha But really, exercise makes me feel better, not worse.
30I have on long runs before, nothing freaky, rather therapeutic.
And once in a yoga class. I hit a pose, relaxed in it, my pelvic girdle readjusted and kind of made a noise, and next thing I knew I was crying but it wasn't in pain.
31aaahhhh sure....sometimes it bust my emotions...idk y...well yes i do NVM
32#1: ilanac13, you need to learn how to form an opinion, #2, yes, because once you have pushed yourself hard enough, it is inevitable.
33Yes, I've become teary during dancing. If I find a certain piece of music particularly moving, and dancing to it, and becoming empathic with it -- yes, I've been moved to tears.
34Nope, and I'm kind of emotional generally.
35no
this is funny really. but i guess people are different. i don't
cry as a rule, only when i watch a sad movie.
36It seems like using exercise to get your emotions out is a little extreme. I am more likely to cry on a stress-releasing phone call with my bff and a three layer chocolate cake.
37Never. I can't really cry in front of stangers and I work out at the gym. Plus I'm sure if I started up I would never be able to stop and everyone there would wonder what this crazy woman is doing bawling at their gym.
38I haven't...maybe I don't exercise enough!
39I definitely cried when I crossed the finish line of my first half marathon and fully expect to do the same when I cross the finish line of my first full marathon in two weeks.
On my last long run, I started crying the last mile and a half back to my car - I'd pulled my IT band, but instead of crying about the pain, I was crying because I was worried how it would impact my training!
40BAWL, not BALL!!!!
Ugh.
