During the extremely food-centered holiday season, many people give up on their diets. I just read a statistic recently in Health magazine that illustrates with numbers how we women eat, diet, and lose weight. Here it is: The average woman tries 104 diets between the ages of 18 and 70. Each diet typically lasts five weeks. If you do the math, the average woman is on a diet for 10 years of her life!
I think this equation reveals much about the problems with how we diet. Many fad diets out there are not sustainable. Losing weight and keeping it off is really about making lifestyle changes and food choices you can handle for the long haul, or in concrete numbers, the other 42 years of your life.
So, what I want to know is . . .

No, I used to be uncomfortable with my weight and when I tried a diet I realized that diets don't work for me, that is all about proportion control and exercises, sure you loss weight, but unless you are willing to eat the same thing as the diet you won't maintain the weight, its all about portion control
1For me, a low carb diet has become a way of life. Diabetes runs in my family, and cutting carbs along with adding exercise has really helped me drop weight. Sometimes I'm more strict with myself than other times, but I think I'll probably be on a low-carb "diet" for the rest of my life.
2I eat pretty well so I'm never focused on 'dieting', what I really have to work on is exercising daily.
3I regularly eat what I should, and then I indulge now and then. I'm not strict about what I eat, and I think that helps me stay in moderation. If I let myself eat what I want (but small amounts of it) I don't get cravings and I don't feel guilty either!
4I've tried every diet in the book and unfortunately, have developed a somewhat unhealthy obsession with weight/nutrition. I love the positivity of this site and it brings me so much comfort to know that other women struggle with similar issues! My biggest weakness is a major sweet tooth...actually, I have several.
5I am technically on a "diet" now as I am trying to lose weight. But once I get there I will go back to my normal habits which is very healthy clean eating and daily exercise. But I do absolutely not believe in fad diets, I think they're ridiculous. I've never done a specific one, but I know the best thing is to stay consistent. Watch your calories (keep a journal, it only really takes a few minutes!), exercise regularly and make it enjoyable (the key is to think of it as 'me time' and not let anything else get in the way of that), and eat clean, unprocessed nutritious foods that will fuel you! It is much more simple than the diet industry (as well as a lot of people in general) makes it out to be. It is also important to let yourself "indulge" on occasion. Not too often, but if you want something, have it. Put it into practice and then it will become a habit!
6I focus more on exercise than calories.
7Not on a diet. Maintaining my current weight.
8moderation!!
9a long time ago i realized that if i call it a diet, then i won't succeed. now i just pay more attention to what i'm eating and how i'm living my life and that's more healthy to me. it has it's benefits and it's behavioral modification rather than just being on a quick fix.
10Seems like I'm with the majority on this one. I've tried diets before, and counting calories, and while they may have worked for a short period of time, I usually ended up gaining back some if not all of the weight one I went off my plan. Rather than focuse on numbers and counting and specific food plans, I simply choose to make healthy choices when eating, while still allowing myself the little pleasures every now and then (and this seems to be the catch phrase) in moderation. It's much more realistic and seems to be working out much better in the long run, which is what being health is all about.
11I'm on a "diet", because I'm trying to lose weight, but it's really just healthy eating and exercise. I've lost 32 pounds so far...8-14 left to go!
12for me, i focus on eating healthy and exercising, in general. i do keep a food journal and count calories, but there are no real "off limits" foods and i don't really consider it a diet.
however, i guess i AM currently on a diet: it's my "i don't want to count calories on thanksgiving" plan. so i'm on the "detox" portion of the fat smash diet, which i used about a year ago to change some bad eating habits i had gotten into and lose some weight (great plan, highly recommend). i plan on using this off and on throughout the next month and a half to keep my weight stable. if i can come out on the other side of the holidays even, i'll be happy. but i don't want to deprive myself, either.
so...for me it's about finding the balance between enjoying food and drink over the holidays without binging or gaining weight. i also plan on doing some two-a-days between now and jan 1 to help (yes, we have a lot of parties to go to!).
13I suppose I am in the minority. I'm on a diet (and have been since sept). I know a lot of people go "oh how can you not notice you are fat?!?!" but I honestly didn't realize I had gained that much weight since college until I tried to get into my corset for the Ren faire. So I decided to lose the weight and get back to where I was in college. Turns out its about 70lbs which seems like a lot but on me its only 3 dress sizes somehow.
14Yep, I am on a diet. I am more focused on being healthy again and not indulging myself (gorging myself) all the time. I lost my good habits and gained a lot of weight. I've just started to get it off. Now in search of a gym..!
15I've never been on a diet. To me it's all about eating healthy and exercising. If I gain weight, I try to be more strict about my daily workout and increase my exercises, but I don't what to be counting calories, that's just pointless. I'm glad to hear that most women realize that.
16i am basically in a year round diet i usually las 12 weeks per diet rest a month and start all over again.
17Nope, for me, holiday seasons are all about fun. And food=fun. I never skimp on cream, butter, cheese etc. etc...in fact, it's not just the holidays, I never compromise on good food. As long as I am getting my veggies and necessary nutrients, it's all fine.
18No. In school in Home Ec. and probably health classes, we always taught that people who go on fad diets (at the time the references were Slim Fast and eating low fat everything) are likely to possibly gain even more weight back so going on a temporary diet always seem like a pointless thing to do. i rather limit the things I do not need to eat that often anyway and focus on foods I should eat more of without getting into the habit of eating the same things all the time. Plus also exercise.
19Not necessarily a diet. Just cutting out the late night snacking and trying to consume less wine.
20Focusing on eating healthy and working out. But I must say that we all have diets, even if we are not trying to lose weight, the term is just misused a lot.
21i am focusing on eating healthy and watching my calories, but not exactly in the spirit in which that option was meant. i'm a recovering anorexic trying to gain weight (blahhh) and slowly up my calorie intake.
22I've never tried a particular fad diet before, just the usual portion control and healthy foods.
Right now i'm doing the Master Cleanse or Lemonade Diet... I've been irregular for a while and i wanted to clean out my system. I'm on Day 4 without food and i'm no longer hungry at all. My skin is better and i sleep so well. The weight loss is just a plus
23Well I guess most would say I'm dieting, but really i've just dramatically changed how I eat, and eat that way most of the time (I'm not perfect, nor do I want to be!) Works for me, I've lost 90 pounds this year so far, with about another 50 lbs to go. I started off following Michael Thurmonds 6 Week Body Makeover, and basically have done that with modifications ever since. And I exercise my ass off....
24Just trying to eat healthy! Everything in moderation...
25Yes!!!! I lost 35 lbs last spring, then gained it all back during the summer and fall. Now I want to re-lose some of it before I go home for Christmas break b/c I know I always gain about 10 lbs over Christmas. So, right now, I'm trying to work out a lot and watch what I eat.
26I've been sort of doing the South Beach diet since April and have lost around 20 pounds so far. I find it very easy to incorporate into daily life. I'm eating low-carb most of the time, having nuts, fruits, vegetables, yoghurt and tofu or lean meat. Working out 3-4 times a week probably also contributed to the weight loss. Also, a pint of ben & jerry's every once in a while
. I'm not even seeing it as a diet anymore, just a healthier lifestyle. I feel
and look much better.
27i've dieted before and have decided its not for me. i dont DO diets. its as if as soon as i tell my brain its on a diet, it keeps sending hungry signals to my stomach.
28so i watch my food and exercise.
Well, I will be soon...but I guess more of a healthy lifestyle change to my diet. To date I've lost around 30lbs and then got tired and impatient with the 'slow & steady approach' and tried my hand at Atkins which help me lose about 8-10 lbs fast but then my body adapted and I just can't give up fruits and healthy grains...so I'm going back to my tried and true: lean meats, fruits, veggies, nuts, whole grains in moderation, water, water, water and exercise and will hopefully lose the last 35-40lbs in about 4 months *fingers crossed*
29you know what - i decided to give up on being on a "diet". i realized that everytime i do this and i start restricting myself from eating certain things - i end up sabotaging myself...
30so now- i realized if i just eat right - and work out - i'm good.. and every now and then i can indulge and i won't feel bad...
I never diet. I eat whatever I want. I'm always the same weight and i run 3 miles 5-6 days a week.
31When people see my eating regime, they usually ask me if I'm on a diet. But I'm not, it's just how I normally eat. I actually LIKE to eat healthy foods and I like to work out. So I basically focus on eating whole foods and working out to maintain my weight. I'm not looking to lose anything, so I'm doing what's working for me.
32"Moderation is key" is my mantra. I will eat any dish that appeals to me, but I watch the portion sizes. If I really want to eat a pint of Vermonty Python I do so without guilt, I just make sure to exercise and eat accordingly the rest of the day. I never want to have to go on a diet, I would rather just stop the problem before it starts by treating my body right in the first place.
33Nope. I'm very happy with my weight.
34Ha I voted on "Watching what I eat" and then remembered I had Jack-n-the-Box tacos for lunch! Yumm! But I am hitting the gym after work...I basically work my butt off at the gym so I can have my Taco splurges once in a while
Other then that, I do consider myself an overall
healthy person. I realized (and actually lost my college weight) that I needed to change my whole lifestyle...not just my nutrition.
35I do not diet! I try to eat good food and move my body, It works.
36I'd like to lose a few extra pounds, but it's mostly eating good foods in reasonable portions. I've set a few rules for myself, but it's not an established diet and there's no calorie counting or anything. I guess you could say it's a personalized diet that I created myself that I'm always working on improving. I'm not at an unhealthy weight and I live a healthy lifestyle anyway, so I see no reason for any strict diet.
37Nope. Eating healthy is normal for me.
38To whoever said that counting calories is pointless...it's not. That's how I've lost over 30 pounds since June. I'm not obsessive about it...I cheat on the weekends and have drinks one night a week. But it works for me. It's the only thing that's worked for me.
By the way, congrats on your weight loss Jabbado!
39I am always on a diet. It's not a big deal for me to eat healthy since I've always been a healthy eater. But putting myself some pressure everyday has helped me to maintain the same weight since I was 16 or so. It also helps me to avoid having late night snacks or other bad habits.
40i'm on maitanance in weight watchers after a total loss of twenty lbs.
41No...I jsut make sure to eat right!
42Sometimes, I get a craving (chocolate on my period!!!) and I have to eat it! I have no choice!
I wish I was "just on a diet" I'm actually trying to eat MORE, in an attempt to try to normalize my eating after I have 'recovered' from anorexia.
43However, I do find this site to be a typically positive and healthy influence!
