So you say you're going to get fit in 2009, eh? Why not put your resolution in motion by running to ring in the New Year? Yep, you can celebrate in the New Year by participating in a fun run or race.
If you're going to be in the NYC area to celebrate the New Year, then you may want to skip the crowds in Times Square and join the Emerald Nuts Midnight Run in Central Park. This four-mile fun run features a costume parade, dancing, and fireworks. It really is more of a party than a race, so you'll burn tons of calories while ringing in 2009.
If you don't live in the big apple, there are plenty of races and fun runs to be found. Active.com has a listing that includes 137 New Year's runs around the nation. You can run in Alaska or Georgia, in Idaho or Tennessee. Some races are on New Year's Eve and some on New Year's Day, with a few races on the Sunday following all the festivities. I would sign up ahead of time to really solidify your intentions.

My sister-in-law and I signed up to run at 9AM on New Years' Day!
1Really? That's kind of cool! Thanks Fit!
I don't want to be stuck at home or watching the young kids at church, but I don't think I'm into the club/bar crowds either. This seems like a nice alternative. I'll have to check it out - hope there's something going on near me!
2I am thinking about a 6PM 5K Resolution Run on NYE in Denver. It all depends if we stay in a hotel there for a concert we are going to afterwards.
3that's really cool and a fun new idea. i don't know if it'll be too cold for a run - but it's something different and cool to think about. the only problem that i foresee is that in NYC - there are crazies out all the time on new years (trust me, i've been one of them in the past) and being in CP may be iffy....
4This is awesome I just wish they had one in my area
5Good idea! I might do this!! Thanks!!
6what a fun idea!
7OMG This looks like so much fun! Maybe I'll do this!
8There is no point in starting to run on New Years if you are not going to keep it up. Or maybe some people will for about 2 weeks. If you are serious about keeping up the exercise routine check out http://www.myfavoritestyles.com for some cool nighlife running gear.
9I need suggestions on good new year's resolutions. Comment on my blog at justcallmesassy.blogspot.com. The winning suggestion gets the baked good of their choice.
We have a 12am run and a 10am run (both 5k and 10k options) in my city. I'll probably be at a party for the midnight run, but might show up for the morning one.
10I'm not going running at midnight or anything, but I am going to work out on New Year's Day. I don't have to make a resolution to get fit; it's sort of already a habit.
11Meh, I rather start my new years resolution as I always do. Set my alarm 5 minutes early so i could get an extra mile in, then end up hitting snooze by accident.
12We are spending New Years snowshoeing and hiking in the French Alps- does that count as New Years-related exercise?
13I totally would, 'cept I'm pretty sure it's a bad idea to run on a tummy full of champagne in an LBD and high heels.
Sorry, but my NYE will be traditional all the way.
