Being fit has a lot to do with behavior, a point that has been getting more attention from dietitians lately. They're looking for reasons why some have more trouble than others when it comes to losing and keeping off weight, and the idea that personality traits get in the way of health goals is explored in the new book Counseling Overweight Adults: The Lifestyle Pattern Approach and Tool Kit. The text is written for dietitians, but as Web MD points out, the book offers helpful insight even if we're not an audience of professionals.
The book breaks down personality patterns linked to eating, exercise, and stress. Check out the seven eating personalities when you read more.
Does your food behavior fit any of these descriptions?
- Meal skipper: often skips meals
- Nighttime nibbler: munches at night
- Convenient diner: eats out often
- Fruitless feaster: skimps on fruits and vegetables
- Steady snacker: snacks a lot
- Hearty portioner: eats big portions
- Swing eater: swings between being a dietary "goody two-shoes" and then lapses

LOL!
I have an overweight friend who refuses to eat a single fruit or vegetable.
She orders taco salad, ''without the salad'' and orders fried rice and eats around the tiny peas and carrots they throw in while saying 'theyre not gonna sneak in any vegetables on me!'.
1Swing eater, definitely. Good during the week - BAD on the weekend.
2same as sundaygreen
3What if you're not any of those? I mess up occasionally, but I wouldn't say I'm a swing eater.
4I would say I am a combination of meal skipper/steady snacker.
5Yeah, I don't know if I fit in any. I sometimes don't have enough fruits and vegetables (but not from avoiding them) but really none of these are me.
6Im definitely a meal skipper and a nightime nibbler.
7I'm a swing eater!!
8Convenient diner and nighttime nibbler. Yikes!
9Meal skipper and nighttime nibbler!
10I suppose nighttime nibbler.
11Mild swing eater. Sometimes steady snacker - depending on which way I am swinging:)
12Nighttime nibbler: munches at night defo!
13I'm with sundaygreen!
14I'm with sundaygreen!
15meal skipper and mild swing eater. :\ not good i suppose. same boat in going bad on the weekends.
16convenient diner =) although i'm learning that at home meals can also be convenient.
17The only one of these that really describes me is the meal skipper...sometimes I'm too tired and/or lazy to cook dinner at night, so I just eat a bowl of Cheerios or something.
18im definitely Swing eater
19I guess I'm a nighttime nibbler, although I don't usually eat more calories than I use during the day.
20Definitely a Hearty Portioner, I'm ashamed to say, heh!
I love to eat, so I almost
exclusively eat fruit, vegetables, vegetarian protein and whole grains, with the occasional higher fat dairy product (i.e. cheese once a week, etc). That way I can eat a lot and try to keep
the calories down. I also like to have meals with lots of different elements so that it takes longer to eat. For lunch today, I had two baked falafel patties and then a huge plate of sliced
granny smith apples, strawberries and green grapes. It took me well over twenty minutes to eat it all, but hopefully won't push me over my calorie budget before dinner!
21I am definitely a swing eater! That is just the perfect term too. I eat tons of veggies, healthy food, small portions, don't eat out much. But when I eat out on the weekends, I tend to indulge.
22Ahh - this article is a total rip off of Diet.com's PERSONALITY Test. Dr Kushner, their head doctor on the site and obesity expert has written many books on this topic and he is the one who developed these names - cite your sources.
23Lifetime Swing Eater here
24i'm definitely a meal skipper - and i know that i've read plenty to know that what i do isn't healthy but it's one of those behaviors that's just really really hard to break.
25I think I'm a Swing Eater. Haha!
26I am totally a hearty portioner! But I eat hearty portions of healthy foods!
