An interesting food study was released this week at the American Dietetic Association's annual meeting in Chicago. In the study, participants were asked to list foods according to a variety of emotional responses. Top on the list for happy foods were ice cream, grapes, chocolate, and pizza. I was surprised to see that grapes ranked so high on the "happy list," and I was equally surprised by some foods ranked lowest on the happiness scale: tofu, salmon, avocado, and bologna. Salmon and avocado? Those are two of my favorite foods and they make me really happy.
One thing I found interesting in this study were the foods that ranked highest in the comfort food category. Chocolate, ice cream, grapes, spaghetti, macaroni, apples, and oranges topped the comfort food list. Count them — there are three fruits in that list. As a health food freak, that makes me pretty excited.
Naturally, I am curious if any of these foods are also your comfort food. So tell me . . .

Celestina
Great Plains
Givenchy
Hot cocoa.
Doesn't matter if its 100 degrees outside.
The hot cocoa puts my in a good mood and soothes any jangled nerves.
1My go to comfort food is a cup of coffee, because then I don't feel guilty about it.
My really bad comfort food is salted kettle chips - not Lays or any other generic brand. They have to be Woolworths salted kettle chips.
Otherwise ice cream (usually a caramel variety) with hundreds and thousands sprinkled on top, or any kind of chocolate.
I'm also a sucker for cookie dough and cake batter.
Though, anything that I'm not supposed to eat usually gets me off.
2French fries!!
3For some reason, bagels with cream cheese and Nature's Valley Granola bars have always been my go-to comfort foods.
4Risotto. Or a hearty beef stew made by either my boyfriend or his mom.
5ok I'm so weird but my comfort food is lentils, cooked down until they're really mushy. And if you want to get specific, squish these into a whole wheat pitta with some veggies and shredded cheese and I'm all yours!
6Parsley. I'm not kidding! There is something about the taste - it works like magic. I get this serene and happy feeling. It's like drug. :
:
I love waffles too. Those are my comfort food too. Candy sometimes too, mainly when studying for exams..
Parsley all the way.
7im between chocolate and french fries
8Kimchi
9haha I can't imagine oranges grapes and apples being comfort foods. it would have to be between ice cream/any dessert and a big juicy hamburger
10all of the above? haha, usually mac n cheese, because it's my absolute favorite. but i've also been known to reach for some chocolate or a bowl of my mom's spaghetti when times are tough
11Mac 'n Cheese.
12Bean Burritos or Allioli (garlic pasta).
13When I hear comfort food I automatically think about really cold nights wrapped in a blanket eating something filling and warm like a chicken and biscuits casserole or pot roast and gravy.
In terms of "happy food" I'd have to go with anything sweet.
And that includes
fruit, but most likely means ice cream!
14Tortilla chips
15For me, it's either a big cup of coffee with cream and sugar (I drink it as dessert) or a big bowl of nice, homemade vegetable soup. I'm a big fan of foods that warm my tummy up and taste really good.
16I'm totally an ice cream junkie. Creme Brulee icecream is my weakness, and if I'm shopping at a store I know has it, I try to avoid the frozen food aisle completely.
17I love spaghetti! I usually make a lightened up version with whole wheat pasta and a vegetarian sauce, but if my portions get out of control it's still a lot of calories.
18Cereal... particularly one with a lot of sugar, like Lucky Charms or Cocoa Puffs... mmmmm
19A big cheeseburger and french fries!
20anything with pasta works for me.
21Apple pie and/or brownies
22anything with cheese, frozen yogurt from TCBY
23A good juicy MacIntosh apple from the list provided above. Fresh just off the branch raspberries and blackberries are my ultimate fructose and fiber passion.
24macaroni and cheese, banana bread, chocolate chip cookies, and anything else that my momma makes best! haha
25c a r b s
26Chocolate and peanut-butter, preferably together
27Lately it's been plain baked sweet potatoes. But you can never go wrong with dry cereal and a couple spoonfuls of all natural pb or cashew butter.
28A bowl of cereal -- either granola or oatmeal -- with vanilla soy milk. I have it every morning, but I crave it during other parts of the day -- I think to regain a bit of my peaceful morning feeling.
I also like honey wheat pretzel sticks with some peanut butter.
29Oatmeal, spaghetti or laughing cow cheese on crackers.
30I voted for chocolate, but really it is Mexican food with really tasty refried beans.
31A happy food that's also a comfort food? apples. Raw, plain, cooked or baked. I love em. Stick some peanut butter and chocolate around it and i'm all yours baby.
32oooh Wiggle, Mexican food is another of my comforts... i was in tears when my mom made refired beans and tortillas in our last days in europe. i just missed "Home/family" food so much.
33bagels, cheese, and pizza. death wish!!! lol.
34Anything bad for you - cheese and crackers, soups, pizza, pasta, dessert, you name it!
35ice cream and cheese!
36The avocado puzzles me too. That is one of my favorite treats. Especially on a sandwich.
37Vanilla chai from Dunkin Donuts...
38Cheese!
39Amy's veggie burger with a quarter cup of brown rice or a baked sweet potato are my ultimate comfort foods.
40Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on white bread. YUM!
41A good cup of coffee, or 100% all natural peanut butter or almond butter. I eat this every day.
42don't have one. it's like an american invention, never have i heard of it somewhere else. sorry ladies
43hot chocolate and/or popcorn.
44jello, too. and cream cheese. not together though!
Carbs in general.
Thick potato soup.
Lasagna.
Grilled cheese sandwich.
But the ultimate 3-piece:
- My grandmother's chicken noodle soup w/ Dutch meatballs
- Chicken croquettes (smushed on white bread w/ butter)
- Dutch chocolate sprinkle sandwiches
That is comfort: My grandmother's kitchen.
45pasta
noodles
ice cream
hotdog
diet coke
grilled ribs
potato chips
johhny rockets burger
mmmmm thats what i could think of wright now
46its a toss up between soup or
47Meatloaf, mashed taters and corn
it only depends on how much effort i wanna put into it.
chocolate makes me happy and all mushy inside instantly.
48im thinking cheesecake, chocolate mousse cake, brownies, butter tarts will al do the trick as well.
very rarely do i crave fries or pizza, but sometime i need those things.
I eat oatmeal when I'm sick or hungover.
49my mother's homemade spaghetti. all-time favorite. that and double stuff oreos.
