Happy Halloween! At my house we have been talking about this holiday for months! I sent a "princess" to preschool and the Olympic gymnast "Shawn Johnson" to kindergarten. My girls are not only stoked that they get to wear their costumes all day long, but they get to celebrate all things spooky: cobwebs, spiders, and monsters. In a recent survey of what Americans fear the most, things that creep, crawl, and slither almost topped the list, so my girls are not far off for measuring what spooks the nation.

The greatest fear of the folks surveyed was getting in an accident like a plane crash, car accident, or being struck by lightning. The second greatest fear was having an encounter with a dangerous animal like a snake, spider, or shark. Quite low on the list were fears about developing health problems; only five percent of surveyed Americans feared diseases, compared to the 29 percent fearing accidents and 27 percent fearing scary animals. Ironically, this survey was conducted by the American Diabetes Association (ADA), and of the small percentage of folks who fear developing a disease, only two percent worry about diabetes. In stark contrast, the ADA believes that 57 million people in the US are at risk for developing type-2 diabetes, and according to the National Lightning Safety Institute about 1,000 Americans are struck by lightning annually.
Since it is Halloween and all, I was wondering . . .

1the dark! and what may be lurking in it!
2cancer...
3I'm terrified of cockroaches. Even though I know they can't really... hurt me... I'm completely terrified of being in an area that filthy. Can't handle it.
4with so many loved ones battling cancer and knowing that it runs in various types on both sides of my family I'm terrified that I will one day be the one battling but I won't let that stop me from living and loving my life and fighting with my loved ones.
5i fear things where I have little to no control of the situation. Ala the plane crash. If you're going down, you're going down and there's nothing that you'd be able to do about it.
Others on the list are things you can control or keep an eye out for so it won't be extreme. Watch out for snakes and spiders and know what dangerous types are in your area, keep the house clean etc., stay in the house avoid electrical appliances and don't go frolicking in a lightning storm, stay healthy to avoid diabetes or know your family health history.
Cancer is the only disease that frightens me, but if I keep up to date on exams and look for any possible warning signs, then there's a better chance I can catch something before it becomes too dangerous.
That's just my thinking.
6all, but in regards to being bitten...i so TERRIFIED of spiders and snakes. the picture here gives me the creeps! it is very halloween though
7Im so glad so many people voted for cancer. Although it is a tragedy that so many people are affected by it, it's reassuring that a lot of us know the risk. My aunt just died of stomach cancer last month. I hope everyone has a great Halloween nonetheless, but be sure to up-to-date on your health.
8Getting cancer definately.
9I've already benn bitten by a spider so I've at least experienced one thing...
*been
10I'm afraid of drowning, though I like to swim, and being caught in a house when it's on fire. Also, I'm noticing as I grow older I become more and more claustrophobic -- Not to an extreme degree, but certain things like crawling in a dark and small cave, just the thought of that creeps me out, especially if it were to cave in (no pun intended. Other than that, since cancer runs in my family (breast, skin, and brain) I'm a bit nervous about that...
11i think that it's the things that i can't really fathom that spook me. im' very afraid of snakes and spiders so those are two things that freak me out big time. other than that - i don't know what they would be off the top of my head...
12That picture made me screech when I looked at my computer!!!!! I'm freakin' TERRIFIED of spiders. All kinds, large and small. Watching me try to kill one when the BF isn't home is probably kind of hilarious, since I find the longest thing I can, and spend the next five minutes shuddering and squeaking as I try to kill it.
13All of the above spooks me. Simply put, I am still very much my 4-year old self in many ways.
14I have a really huge phobia of roaches.
15Some of those choices are ridiculous because for the most part one cannot control whether or not the get some disease like cancer or even diabetes.
That said my fear is I admit really really stupid but none the less real - I am scared of Sponges or anything non-living thing that swells and quickly increases in size. Dry sponges are fine, wet sponges are fine but I freak out if I see a dry small sponge get wet and increase in size. Even just writing this is making me want to vomit.
Yes, I talked to my therapist about this phobia and she thought it was funny at first until she witnessed my uncontrollable freak out by experimenting in her office.
Luckily I rarely happen upon situations where I have to watch a sponge swell.
Oh my other phobia is running out of gas. I had it happen when I first got my driver's license on the 101 in the fast lane at rush hour. My gas meter in my dad's car was broken and I didn't know that it always read full. So since that scary experience I've been super paranoid about that. It used to just be while I was driving, then it spread to even when other people are driving, and even in public diesel buses (which is one reason I chose to drive electric buses over diesel). I just find myself constantly focused and obsessed with fear about running out of gas while in a vehicle.
16I'm terrified of getting into a car crash that kills someone.
I'm terrified of getting into a car crash that doesn't kill me, but leaves me horribly mangled.
I have a weird neurosis about the alarm clock--I always have to check like 5 times to make sure that it's set to the right time and that the alarm is on before I can go to sleep.
"I just find myself constantly focused and obsessed with fear about running out of gas while in a vehicle."
I have that too, wackdoodle!
17I have a real fear of moldy/rotten food. Not the mold itself per se, but the decaying process that the food undergoes to make it inedible. It just really grosses me out that a bag of tasty salad can turn into slimy brown muck in just a few days. What's really weird about this is that I'm a microbiologist and I am around germs all the time. When they're in the lab, they are fine but when they're on MY FOOD they are really scary. I guess I'm also sort of afraid of eating spoiled food unknowingly...I really don't want a case of food poisoning!
18all of the above!!
19Deep, murky, or dark water (like swimming at night & plus I'm not all that great a swimmer to begin with) absolutely terrifies me because I can't see whats there.
20big crowds....I'm terrified that I'd get trampled.
21Oh and haunted houses...I get panic attacks just at the thought of one. I know they're lame and fake, but I was apparently scarred for life by one.
22definitely getting cancer and then having my house burn down, last year was SCARY!!! i am a herpetologist so i definitely dont fear being bitten or encountering "creepy crawlys"! of course when they are where they shouldnt be i will admit it scares the crap out of me for a second.
23I'm also terrified of throwing up or getting food poisoning, like unnaturally obsessed with the idea to the point where I'll wash my hands like, ten times if I have to touch raw chicken while cooking.
24I hate spiders so your picture choice gave me chills. However, cancer is much scarier.
25lizards...those creatures scare the day lights out of me.
26All of the above!!!
27The dark too.
28But I am at such high cancer risk because of family history and I used to smoke.. ugh. It scares me everyday.
The dark too.
29But I am at such high cancer risk because of family history and I used to smoke.. ugh. It scares me everyday.
cancer .... it's the slow lingering death thing that terrifies me.
And I'm unnaturally scared of spiders! I hate anything that will crawl towards you, it terrifies me when I see a spider and it comes at me!! I know it's silly and I could just step on it but I find myself running away and looking over my shoulder to see if it's catching up. So I'm not afraid of things like lizards because they always run away from you.
wackdoodle that's a really interesting phobia, do you have any idea how you came about it? I can only think of one other thing that swells in size really quickly....
30I don't like really BIG bugs. Little bugs are fine, but BIG bugs, no way!
I'm not really afraid of getting cancer. I figure if I get it, then I'll deal with it, I don't want to live my life worrying about getting it.
31My fear is completely irrational. I am afraid of heights. I don't like standing on chairs or ladders or looking out at gorgeous views or from tall buildings. In fact I lived in a second story of a building for 3 years while studying and could not bring myself to look out the windows...yup completely irrational.
32All of the above, but cancer is the big one for me. My mom was diagnosed with colon cancer last summer. And it seems like everyone is getting it these days. Its very hard for me to deal with. I've had a terrible year.
33My main fear is cancer, as it runs in both sides of my family, as does heart disease. My Dad passed away 14 years ago from brain and lung cancer, 4 months after he was diagnosed. It was the hardest thing I've ever had to go though.
34I'm terrified of planes, which is funny because I have to take them constantly, but I hate them. Rats really freak me out too. I don't like knifes either. I hide the knifes in my house before I go to bed, I just hate to see them around.
And then, of course, cancer.
35I have a fear of being kidnapped/murdered. Whenever I hear weird noises at night, I'm afraid someone is coming into my home and going to kidnap me.
I also hate airplanes, and freak out at takeoff and landing.
I never ride rollercoasters (sad, huh?).
Pretty much fear of heights and sudden death.
36Snakes. It's not a fear, it's a phobia; it's not about being bitten specifically, it's just snakes - scales, slithering, anything snake-y. I can't walk barefeet in the grass or look up in trees, and when I'm stressed out I get horrible snake nightmares or get flashes of slithering snakes during the day.
No idea where it comes from!
Wackdoodle - I get that too. Not about sponges, but I know the feeling you're trying to describe. Until only a few years ago, I'd have that recurrent nightmare whenever I had a fever, where I was in a red room where the walls were bumpy and the whole room would just swell and un-swell (is that a word?). I don't get the nightmare anymore, but there are some fabric or objects I can't touch because the texture gives me the same feeling. My flatmate gets the same thing too, feels good to know I'm not crazy!
37I voted for Cancer, nothing on that list scares me.
38except for cancer i mean ...
39definitely cancer.
40I have family members who have died from it.
It doesn't help that I smoke. Which is why I'm cutting down, aiming to quit =]
Getting cancer seriously scares me
All of the above and then some.
41I have a large number of family members who died of cancer, and now my mother has found something "weird" in her breast...I'm scared the sh*t out for my mom, and deep down for me too.
