In my opinion, a well-made sandwich should have a little bit of all the major food groups. Generally, you end up with carbs, veggies, and protein, but don't forget that fruit is also an option for a healthy sandwich topping.

Mix it up. Bring new tastes and textures to your sammy by adding some fruit between your slices of bread. Sliced apple, pear, and grapes work really well, but I've also tried mandarin oranges, bananas, kiwi, and mango. Not only does the fruit add a hint of sweetness and distinct texture to a standard sandwich, but it also adds some always-needed extra fiber to your diet. This works with my girls, too. They love apple slices on their grilled cheese as much as I do.

This sounds like a different way to eat a sandwich. Normally I am into tomatoes on my grilled cheese, and lettuce on my turkey, and apples on my peanut butter. Next time I am in the mood for a change, I'll give your fruit on sandwiches a try!
1This is my OCD speaking:
I have a phobia, so to speak, of mixing tastes...I can't do fruits and vegetables together, like pears or mandarin oranges on salads, or something sweet that shouldn't be, like teriyaki chicken or sweet bbq pork. Something about it freaks me out.
Otherwise, I think this is a great idea. If you can stomach this sort of thing, why not bang out a few more food groups?
2My work caf makes the BEST green apple grilled cheeses
OMG drool
3I've never thought of this, but it seems like a good idea, and I love a little crunch on my sandwich
4never really thought of that. I love bread, cheese, apples and grapes and eat separetly on a plate....but never thought of putting it together as a sandwhich. maybe because i like to taste those foods individually. I'll give your fruit sandwiches try
5I love fruit on sandwiches! Apples are great, even heated up with cheese melted over it. But pear, figs, and even pineapple are delicious.
6Hmmmm I don't have a problem mixing fruit in sometimes but others not so much, it just doesn't work for me.
7I prefer eating fruits by themselves, I understand it is easier to digest specially when it comes to the sugar in fruits.
8Cool.
9There's a wonderful sandwich I like to make, with cranberry sauce, granny smith apple slices, banana slices, and peanut butter on whole wheat bread. Yum!
10Whole wheat toast, peanut butter and apple slices and graps
Ohhhhh yeah.
11I really like peanut butter and cucumber sandwiches...the crunch is really satisfying.
12Fruit always sounded strange to have on a sandwich, but then I tried it. Here are two that I love.
Apple & Cheese; using miracle whip, sharp cheddar, & apple slices
Peanut Butter & Cheese; spread pb on a hamburger bun, both sides, and place a pineapple ring & cheese slices on each. Toast until cheese is melted.
13i've gone the apple slices route before but never grapes. i always thought that the texture there would be too hard and if you had a thin enough granny smith apple slice, you would get the tart, the crisp snap, and a GREAT sandwich all around.
14I was thinking that apples and cheese in a grilled sandwich didn't sound that great, but then I realised that I love cheese and pineapple sandwiches, so I should obviously have more of an open mind!
SanDiegoLove, you're not alone; in general, I have a problem with mixed tastes as well! I grew up eating cheese and pineapple sandwiches, though, so I think you get used to things if you're exposed to them from childhood.
15Hummous and grapes make for an AWESOME sandwich combination.
16Apple slices on grilled cheese sandwiches are so good! I started doing that only recently, when I saw it in a magazine. I also mix chopped up granny-smith apples in with my tuna fish, along with onions and cucumbers. Sooooo yummy.
17Hmmmm...interesting. My mom used to make fabulous almond butter, apple, banana, granola and honey sandwiches for me when I was kid...I am just not into mixing sweet and savory. But I will try it!
18i'd rather eat the sandwich and have the fruit separately. the whole apple thing just doesn't appeal to me.
19but i have friends who tell me that a sandwich with brie cheese nad peaches is to die for. just not my thing.
