I wasn't too thrilled with Tracy Anderson's cardio dance workout. It seemed more personal performance than cardio, but I was still interested in trying her Mat Workout DVD ($29.95).
Tracy's approach to body sculpting is to tone without bulking, so she avoids working the large muscle groups as well as heavy weights. Muscles are worked from a variety of angles, which makes sense since muscle fibers rarely run in a straight line. Many of the motions are small and isolated targeting the smaller, underworked, supporting muscles. She calls this "strategic muscle exhaustion," and you will feel the burn. Much of the workout reminded me of the Bar Method with a dash of sexy jazz dance thrown.
As with her cardio dance workout, this DVD is shot in a very lovely studio, with just Tracy leading the workout and soft music with a beat playing the background. The workout is divided into sections: standing legs, arm work without weights, arm work with weights, standing ab work, floor work for the legs, and a variety of crunches. All in all, I felt pleasantly worked following the workout, and my heart rate stayed slightly elevated in a fat burning zone for the majority of the workout. The entire workout takes just under an hour.
I do have some problems with the workout. To hear my pros and cons, just read more.
The warmup is incredibly short and involves some intense stretching, which if you have tight hamstrings could be dangerous. I prefer, and think it is safer, to get my body warm and blood flowing with a little light cardio before I stretch. Now, I know many women worry about bulking up and fear lifting heavy weights for that reason, but I am just not one of them. I feel this arm workout might tone the arms and give them endurance, but I am not so sure it will make my arms stronger. So in the future I will probably skip those sections. I liked the standing abs and the wide variety of crunches included in the workout. Similar to the dance cardio workout, I feel like Tracy is not leading me, the DVD viewer, through a workout, but trying somehow to make pendulum standing leg swings look sexy. She gives so little verbal cuing that you have to watch the TV constantly or you will miss something, and the worst of this is the ab routine on the floor. I would be crunching with my head positioned correctly when I would glance at the screen and see Tracy had moved onto another variation and not uttered a word. Unlike the overly chipper demeanor of Denise Austin or the infectious enthusiasm of Billy Blanks, Anderson often looks either bored or shy throughout the video, which I just find odd and uninviting.
Since I am always looking for ways to tone my booty, running and lunges do wonders, but so do back attitudes on acute angles, so I will definitely do the legs and abs part of the workout again. The only problem is the workout portion of the DVD isn't formatted in chapters for ease of locating the section you would like to follow. For arm work I will stick to my push-ups, and higher weights for strength training. Have you tried this DVD? Let me know what you think in the comments section below.
You can buy the DVD directly from the Tracy Anderson Method website.

"Tracy's approach to body sculpting is to tone without bulking, so she avoids working the large muscle groups as well as heavy weights."
This goes against EVERYTHING I have read about proper strength training! This woman is a complete f***ing fraud. There is no such thing as 'tone'. OMG it makes me want to scream!
My favourite article about her:
http://www.fitnessfixation.com/?p=837
1i agree, sundaygreen! that article is also one of my favorites. her philosophy about not lifting anything over 3 lbs is ridiculous.
sure, most women DON'T want to be bulky...but do you know how damn hard you would have to work to get that? ask someone who has it and trains for that look! the benefits of a good strength training/weights program are too great to be discouraging people with these lies.
2Getting a little out of subject here, but the way the woman that wrote the article expresses herself is just pretty vulgar, could be the extra testosterone, we just have to seek balance.
3I have toyed with buying her workouts for a while, but for now I stand by what I said in the last review for Tracy's Cardio DVD...I am not interested in paying $30 for a workout video that receives only mixed reviews. Unless it was spectacular, I would consider it. But $30 is steep for a less-than-remarkable fitness video.
4I've heard so many bad things about her now that I'm not even sure I trust her advice.
5This was a great comprehensive review! I've always been torn about TA's whole workout method. I always lift heavy at the gym and don't buy into the myth that women bulk, either. This is probably a good DVD to use to compliment a strength training routine on off days. Again, good review...
6as a person that needs direction when working out along with a DVd, the fact that she gives little to none is a big red flag to me.
thanks for the review. i'll stay away from buying her DVDs.
7i liked the video. i don't buy her theories about strength-training, but i think the video is a good complement to a regular cardio and strength-training routine. it's nice to switch things up sometimes, and the video does have some good exercises that you can do at home (especially now that winter is on its way...).
8if anyone's looking for a short cardio routine for those days that you just can't make it into the gym, i'd recommend jillian michael's "30-day shred" workout. i work out regularly and the first time i did the video, she totally kicked my butt (and it's only about 25 minutes long!)...
9honestly, I just think the dvd is weird. She moves in strange ways and makes weird faces like she's a stripper. I don't feel like I get a good workout from it either.
My favorite is the Bravo Workout dvd.
10ep24-- i like the jillian michaels video too! a friend recommended it a while back so i picked it up. good explanations, quick & intense workout...actually 3 levels of workouts, so you can start out "easy" (lol) and advance. and all stuff you can do in your house with basic equipment.
11I'm thritto-ing recommending Jillian Michael's 30 day shred. I had never done strength training before but I'm really enjoying it. I'm still on level 1 though.
12when i strength train, i bulk up. it's my body type and it sucks. i would be interested in seeing how this type of workout changed my body, if at all. not for $30, not for little to no cuing, and not for a woman who is more concerned with how she looks working out than doing the exercise correctly.
13ep24 I totally agree, 30 day shred is my FAVOURITE workout. I think Fit should seriously do a review on it!
14I'm a guy...and I'm obsessed with Madonna, so I do everything she does to some extent! And let me tell you...Madonna's body has changed drastically since she started working with Tracy. Most people just see the muscle but she really is really small. Pictures really make her look huge and buff.
Anyway, I've done her arm workout for a month and DANG everyone is noticing my arms are looking so much better! I had hanging skin at my triceps since I lost about 60 lbs, and her method really worked. You HAVE to do lots of cardio if you're gonna only do her method though. But it's sooo good if you just want to get small and lean. Her workout is VERY dance oriented. Ballet dancers do INSANE amounts of workouts like these to get small beautiful muscles. It doesn't make sense in the mainstream to do so many reps with no weights but in dance, it's extremely important.
15Dear Sundaygreen and everyone else,
Let me clarify something. Tracy Anderson's method is not for women who wants to look athletic like Dara Torres, it's for women who do NOT want to build muscles but lose their body fat so the muscles that they already have could show just like Gwyneth Paltrow's or Jennifer Aniston's body (I'm exempting Mad's body because she's been physically active from the start).
FYI: When women say they don't want to bulk up, it meant they don't want to build more muscles. And when they say they only want to tone up, it meant they want to lose their body fat and show the muscles they already have.
People have the right to their own preference. If you want a body like Dara Torres then more power to you but at the same time if people want to stay slim and feminine then let them be. Muscles and strength is very good but not all women like it specially when they're short because it'll make them look shorter.
Tracy Anderson's method will not make you gain more muscles but it'll help you burn body fat and enhance the muscles you already have. If her goal is to make women gain more muscles then this is not how her method is going to be and we'll see how many women will love it.
16I just started doing this and I love it! It's different and really works all your muscles. The arm workout is amazing.
17I recently bought this Mat workout video along with her Dance Cardio DVD (different DVD than her Dance Aerobic one). I've done it a few times and I love it! The style and method may not be what everyone likes or is used to but it's my absolute new fave.
Using the light weights or no weights seemed initially to me like, would these moves even do anything. Let me tell you, they were tough and I could barely get through them without pausing. It burned! And I am a gym regular and in decent shape. I've already felt and seen minor differences just after a couple times of doing the DVD. The leg work and ab parts are great too. Just great toning/strength moves. I am an athletic/curvy build and I do bulk some in the glutes and hamstrings so I'm hoping her method might help.
I love the idea of her method, activating and really working smaller muscle groups and accessory muscles (this is why the low weights or none at all because they are smaller muscles!). The idea is to pull in the larger muscles with the accessory muscles and create that long, lean look. If the worst thing that happens to me from adding this video to my rotation is that I end up looking more like her other celebrity client Gwyneth Paltrow who's super slim and toned, then I think I'll be okay.
This DVD has a ballet/pilates feel but still unique from the two. The music and her voice are relaxing and not annoying in the least like other DVDs. She doesn't talk too much, which some people don't like for the lack of direction but I had no problem following her and I thought the direction was adequate. However, if you like a lot of direction and talking, this might not be for you. I think this DVD is great for someone looking for something a little different and to put to use in addition to their regular fitness routine.
18I purchased both Tracy Anderson DVD's from Amazon they were about $60. I tried the cardio, but found it really difficult to follow, but that's because I'm getting older (48) and I can't move that fast, plus I am not very coordinated to begin with. I do however love her mat workout I have been doing it for about a month 3-4 days a week. I also do Turbo Jam - Beach Bodies cardio workout with it. I am giving it until May to see if her arm workout can tighten up the sagging skin under my arms. I have tried every machine at the gym and every workout that I could find and nothing helps. Her arm exercises are the most painful I have ever done. I am starting to see a slight difference so hopefully she can do it. My goal is to do the workout 6 days a week. I'm not concerned so much about the bad press she received if it works to get rid of my "bat wings" it was worth the $60.
19I've ordered all 3 of her workouts with the security that I can sell them on eBay for more than I've paid if I don't like them. Contrary to a lot of other posters, I DO bulk from weight training, and not in a good, ripped kind of way. I get thick shoulders and neck muscles, and it is NOT attractive when paired with a 34D chest. As a fan of Tracy Effinger's method, and having tried out TA's Self A-List Arms workout, if anything the Mat and Post Partum workout will be a great addition to my already huge workout video collection, the only thing that I like bulked up.
20I bought Tracy's DVD Mat workout approximately 4 weeks ago & have been doing it 4-5 days a week ever since. I have lost 10 pounds & 1/2 inch off of my biceps, not counting inches off everything else!
21I love it! There are a few negatives as was mentioned, but overall, i feel like a get a great workout for my muscle structure. I have had countless people comment on my "new" look & ask what i'm doing. I see definition where i didnt before, & i have always enjoyed weight lifting, but not the bulky look that my short muscle structure (thanks to my dad!) presented. I give it a big thumbs up & my husband thinks my bootie has never looked better!!
I just tried this DVD and wanted to chime in with my comments. I am the kind of person that puts on muscle easily - I did p90x for a while and my arms got so big that some of my shirts fit differently and my abs were so out there and six packy and I hated it. I eat really low calorie and healthy and do lots of cardio, I just bulk up because that's my body type.
After this workout I felt great, like really great. For me after an intense strength training circuit at the gym I just feel like my muscles grew 2 times and I feel massive. You don't feel that way after this DVD, you feel long and lean and powerful. You have to be really engaged in the workout for it to work, like in ballet or yoga you can't have limp arms and every movement needs to be with strength and direction. If you do the workout this way its intense, my arms were burning so much in the without weights section it was amazing. My legs and butt got a great workout and my abs feel tight but not bulky (like I get when I do a lot of crunches). I enjoyed the workout and the hour went by fast.
I'm definitely going to continue with this mat workout as my primary strength training for a month and see how I do. I'll update my comments then.
22love tracy anderson method i have been doing both dvds for 10 days already seeing a difference , the cardio kills me but i burned 600 calories in 40 minute , ilove that she does not stop or talk she makes you enjoy your work out not just hear her talking and talking and not burning enough calories. the mat is amazing i do tend to bulk up fast specially with lunges so this mat dvd is doing good things for my legs , if you are willing to work hard then give this a shot you will super love it , what i love about all of her dvds is that she does not give you an exercise routine that will bore you she makes you work hard like her celebrity clientell and thats what i want , i hate when those instructors talk so much and tracy will not do that thats why i love her dvds and the studio is total luxury love it.
23I've been doing Tracy's mat workout for two months now and absolutely love it. I used to do alot of weight training and I looked great when I did it but then I injured myself and had to stop working out for a while. Guess what happened? That nice muscle turned to FAT. UGH. So now I am determined to put on lean muscle and thats whats happening with this workout. My legs also got all fatty and they're starting to look lean and defined. I absolutely LOVE that she doesn't talk much. I have hated other dvd's with their bubbly cheerleaders. Totally annoying. I'm a Tracy Anderson fan and could give a rat's ass about her so called past.
24well, it's true that you don't HAVE to bulk from strength training at the gym, but wat TA is saying is also true, you can train your smaller muscle groups for a more feminine look.. it could be that with your own body type those muscles from training in the gym can become a little bulky.. with the TA method you just train those muscles that make you seem long and lean wihtout being too musculair.. i personally like the dvd's, you can really feel your muscles work, trust me i work out a lot and the TA video made my arms HURT like hell so it DOES work.. those nasty comments are useless, everyone needs to choose a work out that fits to their personal standards.. with the TA video you will develop a more danser type of body and by working out in the gym your body will be more athletic, you just have to make up for yourself what type of body you're after.. most women tend to like a more natural slimming dancer type of body in stead of a wheeler's body..
25in addition to my last post.. i personally think tracy looks a lttle shy on the video, she does seen into it but she is so relaxed and quiet that it doens't bring over the energy you get from (for example) core rhytyms or kickbox video's.. true! and you really have to watch her, when you're attention slips she's already in a different position when you look back at your screen.. but after a few times you dont really need to look all the time any more because you're familiar with the routine.. too bad it doens't pump out of your stereo but with these tough excercises it might just be that it's even better for you when your trainer is relaxed and doens't make it seem like you really really have to work it bring it because with these excercises you will do so anyway
26...you know when you are working your muscles if you reach a point where they are fatigued and burning.....this video definitely brings the burn.......it works. Some are just so stuck in the same old same old ways of training. You need variety and switching things up tricks your body and works that much faster. It comes down to personal preference...just learn to give new things a chance this is how we grow. This video have made me see definition I did not know I had.....take that to the bank and cash it. Madonna is no dummy...if it did not work she would not waste her time....and neither would I. Thanks Tracy Anderson.
27I'm back! Been doing the DVD as well as cardio (at the gym, mixing it up with biking elliptical stairmill all kinds of things) as well as doing the DVD 3-4 times a week (she wants you to do it 5-6 but I haven't had the time lately). I'm LOVING the results, so much so I don't mind working out for an hour 40. My arms are starting to look different, that excess I get near my armpit/underside of my arm is finally tightening up and my shoulders are looking much better. My delts are smaller and look more feminine. My abs feel tiny and tight. I can't rave about this enough, it really is all the strength training I'll ever need.
28Bought the DVD on amazon and its coming this week. I can't wait to try it. I think I need something new from the regular moves I pull at the gym.
29LOVE her method. I do the pregnancy video all the time! Even though I've never had a baby
. Her videos are awesome. I've never hated working out. I just didn't like it as much as I thought I could. I actually look forward to working out now. With Tracy it feels like
less of a chore! I highly recommend her dvds!
30I have had this DVD for a couple of months and have only been doing it 2-3 times per week (she recommends 4-6), but I am noticing slow changes. It's a HARD workout and the first time I almost cried in the standing arms section because I just couldn't do it. I've never seen anything like the standing abs section (a mix of stripping, belly dancing, club dancing . . . ), and it's making a difference. I also love the music and TA's quiet demeanor (though I get distracted sometimes by how stripper-like some of the moves are. I don't mind if it works; I just don't think my husband should watch this DVD!) It's true that once you've done the workout a few times, you won't need directions any more, so that part's only an issue for the first couple of weeks. I recommend giving this DVD a try.
31Acting as Devil's Advocate here, I have to take issue with the initial comments and the incredibly immature review linked in the first comment....
This DVD works if this is what you are looking to do. If you want to be toned (yes, there is such a thing as toned) without having stand out muscle definition, then this and some of the Bar Technique videos with lots of low impact cardio are for you. If you want to look like "The Dara" Torres as the linked review prefers, this is not the workout for you. While Dara is a total hero and a lovely woman, I personally don't find her build to be one that I myself want to sport. Fit and attractive have many definitions, so if Tracy Anderson's goal is not yours, don't be offended, but also don't give offence. No need to be rude.
As for Anderson's methods, she gives you what she advertises, so if you find the offer interesting, purchase the Mat Workout and go from there. You've spent $30 on stupider stuff, trust me.
32I was not impressed with this video AT ALL. As mentioned in earlier reviews, Tracy seems shy and is very boring to watch. She isn't at all motivating and doesn't hardly talk at all. She just moves onto different moves without saying a word, which means not being able to take your eyes off the video. Also, this video is not for anyone who has back problems. I'm very healthy and after doing her video my lower back was killing me! I would definitely not recommend this DVD.
33i just finished doing this workout and it's great! I love the chair exercises and how she varies and seperates the legs, arms and abs. The only cons, which you've already mentioned is the cueing and time. It's no 20 min workout. I thourougly enjoyed it even with having to watch her closely and appreciated her not being fake or overly excited (a la denise austin). Some of the time she looked like she was trying to put a dance into every move, but she's just enjoying it and being her dancer self. I personally liked the fact that i didn't have to stay stick straight through it all - especially through the parts that burned! being able to move a bit keeps me at it longer.
34If you wanted it shorter you could always mix and match the leg/arm/and ab routines. there are two of each. Legs and abs have a standing and floor routine. the arms have a routine with weights (3lbs) and without...
I tried her workout dvd - it is ok, and did not lift an inch for me...also I went to Miss Anderson's 3 hours NYC retreat that was a purr waste of my money (she did the workout for herself adoring her moves and did not explain anything as we would all know what is next to come) I agree with your review very much...thank you
35I first discovered Tracy's method 6 months ago and have never been in better shape! Not only do I look toned but I feel rock solid and stronger than ever. The BEST part of Tracy's workouts is that they are so fun to do. I look forward to them daily. It's impossible not to see amazing results with 4 weeks dedication to this workout!
36While the Mat dvd does exhaust your muscles I find it irritating that she doesn't give direction very well. How are you supposed to work out to the fullest extent if you have to keep checking the tv to make sure she hasn't moved on?
37I also don't like the stretching before you are warmed up, most other workout programs do that at the end, it's just safer that way.
The arm workout is about the only thing that I will keep using and because of that I regret that I had to pay $30 for this dvd.
I have been doing her post-preg workout for 2 months now (4-6 x per week), including cardio and light weights at the gym (I do 5-10 lbs depending on the rep) and I've definitely noticed an improvement. I had a baby 7 months ago and trying to lose the last 10 lbs so I can fit back into my pre-preg jeans again! I feel like after the 2 months, I want to try something a bit more challenging and after reading these posts, I've decided I will try her mat workout. When I first did her preg workout, I barely got through it. It was so tough! But by the end of the first month, I was doing each of the exercises like a seasoned pro. It's true, the workout definitely made me feel stronger and more confident. And it helped the trouble area - the abs! Although I still have lots more to improve.
38I think if you find what works best for your body - typically, it would be a combination of different routines - you will see results. Because doing one type of exercise is only going to workout those same muscles over and over again, while doing a variety of exercises will only workout a variety of muscles. Makes sense, no?
Ladies and Gentlemen, I'm reading W A Y too much negativity about TA's method. If you would like a DANCER's body then use her mat and dance cardio workouts...and do them 5 to 6 times a week. P E R I O D.
Don't complain about the 'faces' she makes. Don't complain about the DVD menu. Don't complain about the way she instructs.
Instead, JUST DO IT! ... because it works... it works when you do it they way she wants you to do it ... again, 5 to 6 times a week ...BOTH dvd's (yes that's nearly 2 hours of exercising) . AND DO IT FOR MONTHS AND MONTHS AND MONTHS.
But remember, DON'T do ANY other kind of exercise (no spinning, no weight lifting, etc.) because you will NOT accomplish the results that her method intends.
[She doesn't say that lifting weights is 'bad' or unhealthy...physical activity is ALL GOOD... but that's not what her method is about.]
Think of the BALLERINA body...this is what you will achieve with her method....
And remember: THE MORE WEIGHT YOU CARRY ON YOUR BODY RIGHT NOW (ie. being 'over weight' or having a great deal of fat) THE LONGER IT WILL TAKE TO ACHIEVE RESULTS.
So p l e a s e stop arguing and just go do something healthful (whether it's Tracy Anderson's method or not).
P.S. ElectroPopTart is 100% correct.
