In the mood for something with a little more action than a chill jog in the park? Try out an African dance class. Classes are most often accompanied by live musicians, mostly drummers, so the energy practically busts through the roof. The drum beats are so contagious, you really can't help but kick your knees, flail your arms, and spin around. This type of movement feels exhilarating and freeing.

Don't worry if you have two left feet when it comes to dancing; start with a beginner class. There will be lines of people with an instructor in front leading you through a series of movements. I hung out in the last line my first few classes, and everyone was really supportive of the beginners. The trick is to not be embarrassed and just let yourself go, so you can have fun and burn more than 400 calories per hour.
Hopefully African dance classes are offered in your area because everyone should try it at least once. Wear comfortable clothes, bring water, and expect to pay about $10 to $20 for the class.

I took an African dance class in college. Best class ever!!
1I always have this question about "African Dance" classes: So this is supposedly some fantastical dance that magically distills an entire continent and its culture, rituals and moves into one specific dance move?
How does that happen? And where can I take White European Dance or Pan-Asia Dance or North American Dance classes?
How about calling the class "dances we think look like the belong unspecific negro tribes in Africa".
2Imagine my excitement to click on the link and see my ex-brother-in-law (the teacher), my sister (in the red top in the back row) and my nephew (the little guy running around)! This class is taught in Boulder, CO and is a great workout!
3i'm young and fit and work out quite a lot. so i thought the african dance class would be a breeze. i loved it, i shook what my momma gave me to the beat of the drums, i jumped as high as i could, and i always had a huge grin on my face during the class. but lo and behold, after the first week, i threw out my back and had a slipped disc. i was laying in bed for two months!!! so be careful!!! i think i got a little too into it. hehe. no more african dance for this one... i stick to ballet and tap classes now...
4I also took an African dance class with my college roommate during my senior year. It was such a great workout. After the first two classes, I wanted to drop it because it was so hard. But once I got the hang of it, I really liked it. Too bad it's not offered where I live now.
5I have taken classes like this in college, actually as a requirement for my dance minor. I was happily surprised how much fun they were.
