Ozone pollution, more popularly known as smog, is a big problem. Smog can inflame and damage the lining of the lungs, which can lead to swelling and restricted airways. Inhaling smog is like getting a sunburn on your lungs. This inflammation can lead to shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing and chest pain. It can also aggravate asthma and bring on attacks.
According to the American Heart Association, chronic exposure to air pollution has been linked to heart disease and stroke. The EPA says that exposure to smog can also affect your immune system's ability to fight off bacterial infections.
High levels of ozone, the main ingredient in smog, can cause irritation to the eyes, nose and throat, even in the average person. Bad levels of ozone are formed when heat and sunlight warm certain pollutants from cars and smokestacks from buildings.
Since summer is coming up, it's something we really need to watch out for. If you exercise outdoors in a place that's heavily smoggy, you may notice that it's more difficult to catch your breath. So on high alert days, you may want to workout inside.

5yeah, every state has its problems. i still love my cali...
6Wow, lots from Cali. Hopefully with the enviro-friendly fuels etc. we can reduce this problem.
7mostly CA and TX! i was thinking Vegas might be on it, in the morning, if u are far away from the strip and look towards it you can see the smpg hovering over the city!
8i just remebered glam, i was watching a show last night about alternative fuels. i agree i think our counrty should start doing more about this problem
9Big cities + dry, hot climate = smog. I love my home, but on those August days looking out over LA, it's really gross.
10Plus, it's surrounded by mountains, which traps the pollution in, like in Santiago, Chile.
11I love just north of Dallas-Fort Worth, great.
12I wonder if we have higher cancer rates in LA. It's gross when you fly in- as you're landing you can see the line where you stop being in clean air as you come down. All of a sudden it goes from blue to orange. Mmm, smog.
13Why am I not surprised that LA topped this list?
