Recently when I was writing about Matt Damon and his triathlon, I reminisced about my own completion of a triathlon — though I did the whole thing on my own! I'm very proud of a lot of my fitness accomplishments, the triathlon being among my proudest moments, but I would have to say that my favorite achievement was just simply becoming a runner.
Years ago, I refused to run. I despised it because my endurance was not up to par and I could only run a few minutes before getting totally winded and I just hated it. After much practice and patience, I am now able to run miles on end and it feels great. Have you had a proud fitness moment? It could be as big as completing a marathon or something small such as joining a gym. Speak up and share your proudest health and/or fitness moment and maybe you'll motivate someone to reach their goal, too!

Learning how to swim at 26. More like learning how not to drown. Proud of it since I hate water that I don't drink.
1Mine was probably last year at Race for the Cure. I had never run any "race" by myself before. I drove myself there, and then ran the race all by myself. At first I felt unmotivated without someone to cheer me on, but then I realized I could be my own cheerleader. When I got to the finish line, there were 1000s of women cheering me on to finish, and that moment was awesome! Then, eating all the free goodies was fun too haha. I can't wait to do it again on November 2!
2Finishing the San Diego marathon!
3Losing my "freshman 15" so to speak. It took me all summer, but I ended up in better shape than before I went to college!
4My daughter (teenager) didn't want some jeans that were a little big on her...and she gave them to me. And I can wear them!!
5Mine was running my very first 5K. I had never done a race before and I was a newbie runner. It paved the way for me to run more races later on.
6I think my proudest moments have been coming off of long backpacking stints. A few weeks in the wilderness. I live for that stuff.
7Becoming a runner with my fiance - we were both too out of shape to run more than a couple blocks a month or so ago, and now we're running every night (or trying to, at least!) and going farther and farther each time!
8Just starting to run. Never thought I could and now I really like it. I just ran in a 5k and it was great!
9This past weekend, I completed my third half-marathon race. I wasn't feeling 100% with a few injuries but completely rocked it. I ran the same race last year, but improved my time by 40 minutes. I was completely proud of my 2:01:16!!!
10Losing 60 lbs. It took me a yr and a few months, but I did it. Not only did I fit into many "goal" outfits, but now they're too big!
11I've summitted Mt. Rainier twice! Once in my senior year of college, and then again nine years later.
12This is going to be stupidest one, but it's my 'proudest' time...
A week or two ago, with a cold and ankle/leg problems, shaved 10 seconds off my mile, an already slow 11:14 to a 11:04.
13Completing my Group Centergy Instructor certification last year. I never believed I could do anything athletic very well, but I proved myself wrong. Certification was the most challenging and rewarding physical accomplishment I've ever achieved.
14I just ran my first 5K on Saturday, less than 17 months after breaking my back. I didn't do as well as I wanted to, but considering the fact that at one point I could barely make it around the block using a walker, I feel pretty good about that. I'm running another 5K in a week & I hope to do better.
15I did my first 5k last October, but wasn't able to run the entire thing. When my sister-in-law invited me to run with her on Thanksgiving morning, I stepped up my training and focused my goal not on time, but on running the whole thing. I did it!
16Mine was becoming a runner too. It always makes me feel really proud of myself when I do a long run.
17Fit, that's a great one about becoming a runner, and I agree I'm very proud of that for myself too!
But I have to say I'm proudest when I push myself to go farther when I feel like I'm up against the wall. This happens a lot when I go hiking in the Rockies. We'll go out on a long and tough trail, and when I feel like I can't go any more, I find that second wind and keep going until the very end. There's nothing better feeling than that!
I have one more, last one I promise, the first time I went mountain biking was so thrilling! I remember coming down a steep hill with tons of rocks and boulders, and just doing it and not letting my fear of falling stop me!
18I was always athletic, but hated running! It took me many years and many failed tries to finally enjoy it! To keep me motivated I entered some 5k's, a 24 hour relay (in which you run a 2k loop every 5-6 hours depending on how many team members there are), but the event I was most proud of was a duathlon (a triathlon minus swimming). I had to run a 4k, bike 30 k (15 uphill), then run another 4 k. It was the most I'd ever run! My goal was not to walk! I completed the course and achieved my goal!
19Running my entire first 5k
20I've finally made healthy eating and exercising a part of my life. I get on the elliptical at least 5 days a week, I never eat fast food, and I eat lots of fruits and vegetables. This is a HUGE change for me! I've lost 27 pounds, and I only have 14 more to go. It may not be a marathon, but it's felt like it for me! I feel better than ever!
21setting my University's record in the pole vault. 3 times in one week.
22I have a few...
I would say hiking Piestewa Peak's Summit trail without even realizing it was the summit trail and being able to hike it with such ease.
Being a pretty consistent gym member for 2 years now. I just had my 2 year anniversary!! This is something I would never do or be able to do. I hated exercising 2 years ago. And now? Now I love it and I miss it when I don't go... well not always.
Taking up Spin Class (the most feared class in the gym). I'm now addicted and I've been going at least once a week since the beginning of the year.
This is gonna sound silly, but I was terrified to run on the treadmill, I would walk, but never run. I have been running on the treadmill for the past few months and now love it!
I think its amazing how people can evolve!
23urban those are some great achievements! Keep up the good work!!!
I was the same way about Pilates class, I was such a skeptic, but I took it and LOVED it and have been doing it for almost a year and a half now!!
24Climbing Half Dome! It was definitely the hardest thing I'd ever done at the time, both physically and psychologically, and it started a trend of choosing one ridiculous fitness-related task to accomplish every year. (I'm currently seeking one for 2009; any suggestions?)
25I grew up hiking, and so I don't really have any proudest moments, but I am very inspired by how you described you despised running, Fit...because I'm there. I've been exercising on my treadmill. It's been a few months, and I still hate it so much. Sometimes I can push myself to do 30 mins, a few months ago I used to be able to do 45, when I first started, for some reason I just can't bring myself to do 45 anymore, and even 30 is difficult. So it's inspiring to read, that it might eventually get better if I keep with it.
26My proudest moment was overcoming the eating disorder that I battled with for 4 years. I spent each day of those four years in complete agony, believing that I'd be like that for the rest of my life. I am so thankful that has become my past!
27Ha this brings back memories! When I was in fourth grade, one of our coaches in PE asked all of us who thought we couldn't run one lap without stopping to raise our hand. I was one of the people. He told people to put their hand down until finally I was the last one raising their hand. He explained to me that if I could run one lap around the entire school without stopping, everyone else wouldn't have to run two laps like we usually did the next time we had PE which was a week from that day. I got up, started running, and EVERYONE in the class cheered for me. I ended up completing it and have been a lover of running ever since! (sorry this post is so long!)
28Um crazylovevbug... I'm pretty sure that is the most precious story I have EVER heard.
29Like so many others, running my first 5k! I also hated running. I did the couch-to-5k program and I was dying the first day, even though I only had to run for 60 seconds.
