If you want to try your hands at a triathlon, but are worried about being able to do the whole thing on your own, then think about getting a team together. Recently Matt Damon completed the running portion of the Escape from Miami Triathlon as a member of a relay team along with his stepfather and family friend. Doing just one portion of the race is ideal because it enables you to get your feet wet (literally speaking if you're the swimmer) in the triathlon world, but takes away the fear of having to do something you're not ready to do or feel comfortable doing (or simply just don't want to do). My sister-in-law does a tri with her parents every year and I've always thought it was a fabulous idea, not to mention a great bonding experience. Maybe the saying should be that the family that tris together, stays together.

That's a great idea! I didn't know you could do this. The running portion is what is really holding me back from a tri; I hate running long-distance.
1I'd love to do this. I know my sister-in-law would be easy to convince, but I'm not sure who else would be game. Maybe we'll use the holiday season to do some recruiting and start conditioning.
2What a great tip, I'll definetely keep this in mind the next time a tri enters my neck of the woods. Maybe I'll run, since I don't really like to swim for real and I don't think my little Electra Townie would cut it in a race!!
3i have to admit, i don't get it. the idea of a tri is to compete in three disciplines one after the other, without a pause. you have to have a certain performance level in all of them and you have to have a great endurance. yeah, maybe it's a nice family-thing but it's not the idea of a triathlon.
