I am so sad when I see people on diets that restrict their carb intake. Carbs are compounds made up of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen - and they are VITAL for providing energy to our bodies and our brains. Without them, we'd be unconscious noodles!
Not all carbs are created equal; therefore not ALL of them should be avoided like the plague. There are 2 different kinds: simple and complex.
Simple carbohydrates are the ones to ditch. These are mostly made up of refined sugars and very few essential vitamins and minerals. They metabolize quickly, giving us a sugar high and quickly dropping us into sugar meltdown. It isn't pretty. This rollercoaster blood sugar ride makes us feel even hungrier, so we tend to repeat the cycle. Foods like soda, diet soda, candy, foods made with white sugar, and breads and pasta with white flour - should really be consumed in moderation, and YES moderation is my new favorite word.
On the other hand, complex carbs are made up of starch and fiber, so they release gradually and provide our happy bodies with a steady source of energy. Foods like beans, veggies such as potatoes and sweet potato, and whole grains like quinoa, brown rice, whole wheat, and barley are complex carbs. When you eat them, they make you feel full and satisfied for longer, so you eat less.
What about fruit? To find out, read more
Fruits contain naturally occurring simple sugars and many of them contain a great deal of fiber that slows down digestion - thus limiting the sugar energy from immediately flooding our bodies. So go ahead and eat that fruit - your body will be psyched with all those enzymes, vitamins, minerals, and cancer-fighting tannins and flavonoids. Another thing, fruit is mostly made up of water, so it hydrates your body and aids in the cleansing, detoxifying, and elimination process.
Fit's Tips: Read labels and look for foods containing whole wheat flour. Enriched flour is a fancy word for the process of stripping all the healthy stuff (nutrients, vitamins, and minerals) out of the whole grains to make them lighter in color and smoother in texture (companies thought lighter, smoother products would sell better). They then add some of the nutrients back (hence the word "enriched" or "fortified"), but our bodies can't absorb them as easily, and they make us feel crappy.

I went 4 days w/o carbs just the other week to try that South Beach Diet out ... I couldn't even make it the 2 weeks before I said "Screw this ... sushi is GOOD for me" and ate some for lunch! So, all weekend I ate carbs ... and loved it! I stayed away from soda, only had small portions of carbs and just decided to eat healthier all around. =P I'm German ... and we LOVE our potatoes! =P
1I am definitely a carboholic! Love these shirts, too.
2My fav carbs are brown rice & potatoes!! I couldn't live without potatoes!
3when i was little, i always told my mom and dad i wanted to be a carbohydrate when i grew up!
can you tell i'm the daughter of a chemist?
4lol @( or w/? ...I dunno) vegan musician.
Anyway, I love carbs and I can't believe people actually bought into the low carb diet! I didn't see the logic in it - were people supposed to eat less because they didn't have enough energy? Screw that, I too can't live without my potatoes!
And I love the "I
5vegan musician, that's hilarious!
6I couldn't live without carbs either. One of my friends went on a really restrictive diet and completely cut out carbs. After a while she smelled like an old people's home. Don't know how else to explain the smell. She started eating carbs again after her boyfriend refused to sleep in the same room as her because of the smell!
It's caused by some chemical reation in the body I think.
reaction, not reation...
7hahaha, so carbs can possibly be the cure for "old person smell!"
8That's so weird about the "old person smell." Yes - I love carbs too!
9mmm pototoes
sigh, i love carbs so much, but i gain ALOT of weight when i eat it on a regular basis
10I gave up carbs for Lent this year. And my advice to all is DO NOT EVER give Up carbs. My body is still in the process of trying to recover.
Style Before Comfort!
11I am a carb addict. And a meat addict. And a.....well, I just love food!
12haha
I think it's crazy and so confusing sometimes! I was going through the bread section of my grocery store and checking out the labels. Most of them listed Enriched Whole Wheat Flour as their first ingredient and adverted how wonderfuly low in calories they were. Now I make it a goal to read EVERY label of the product I plan to buy! Very suprising!
13SU3 - reading labels is the best thing you can do to ensure that you're putting healthy stuff in your body because like you said, companies try to fool you!
