Our society, particularly our dieting society, has become obsessed with protein. Dr. Atkins and friends have managed to convince us that eating more and more meat is the way to go.
The Meatless Monday Campaign, which is a national health campaign aimed at preventing heart disease, stroke, Type 2 diabetes and cancer, has begun. The problem with eating too much protein is that many of us do not understand that the body can't store excess protein. The thing is that if you consume more protein than you need, you'll just eliminate it through your urine and put an extra strain on your kidneys to metabolize it. Not to extra mention the amounts of saturated fat and carcinogens (in well done meats) that are consumed by eating a high meat diet. The goal of the campaign is to reduce consumption of saturated fat 15% by 2010, which translates to cutting out meat and high-fat dairy one day a week.
I'm all on board for this. It's not a totally dramatic change and it's not a push for us all to become herbivores either. Meatless Mondays here I come.

Ha, this disproves something I heard a few years back during the Atkins craze, that the body stores protein as fat when it's not used (like carbs)!
1Sounds like a pretty feasible idea! I shall try this on Monday. Does tuna count as this sort of meat? Fish should be okay, right?
2Actually, fish is meat. It's a common misconception that eating fish or chicken is considered a vegetarian diet. Vegetarians consume no animal meat, including fish. If you eat fish only (and then just plants), you are considered a pescatarian.
3I will do it. I am not so sure about my hubby, though. We should start a group, either here or in yum for sharing recipes and tips on how to make it through a meatless monday. Do eggs count?
4I love the idea of a recipe swapping group! I have a fabulous recipe for black bean quesadillas that are so so yummy. My fiancee is half Mexican so he grew up with amazing homecooked Mexican food all the time and he loves these quesadillas. If anyone wants the recipe I can post it!
5I shall also join meatless monday!!! I don't actually eat meat until dinner time anyways, and then it is a small amount compared to the veggies i eat. yay!!! You know, i bet i could easily be a vegetarian...since veggies are such a good snack, i have started sancking on them before dinner when i can't wait for it to be done (even if it only 15 mintues) an appetizer i guess youc ould say...it fills me up enough to where i only eat one protion of my dinner foods and i am full. yay!

Why don't you wear the face you have when I am not around?
But fish doesn't contain that much saturated fat, if any, right? Usually it's just sausages, ham etc that contains saturated fat.
ChiTownEm - post the recipe! Sounds great!
7i never understood the need to eat meat everyday. or more than once a day...

9We don't eat meat everyday in our household either - I think it's great to be aware of your consumption.
Over at YumSugar, we try to post at least one vegetarian meal a week - only sorry guys we can't play along every monday. That's when we turn Sunday dinner into Monday's leftovers (although there have been at least three vegetarian Sunday Dinner/Monday leftovers in the last few months)! Hope some of those recipes work out for you!

Hmmm...this looks like a great idea! I'll go try "Meatless Monday" out. 'Sides I'm looking for extra ways to cut down on the meat I consume so it can help in my diet.
