Your Top Five Tips for Kicking the Soda Habit

Recently a user asked for advice on kicking the soda habit and you came through with some fabulous tips and advice, especially since many of us have had to kick our own Coke guzzling practices to the curb. Your top tips are:

  1. Switch to seltzer water or sparkling water. You'll get the fizz, but not the sugar. If you miss the flavor try the flavored varieties. If possible find those flavored without high fructose corn syrup.
  2. Find a healthier drink to be addicted to. Suggestions include iced tea, milk, and Kombucha tea.
  3. Drink water. Lots and lots of water. If you can't stomach the plain water, try flavored. Think about adding your own flavors like a splash of 100 percent fruit juice or Crystal Light.
  4. Cut down. Don't deny yourself your pleasure, that could only make you want it more. Slowly eliminate it from your diet.
  5. If all else fails, go cold turkey. Sounds hard, but many of you guys think that stopping drinking soda completely is the only way to ultimately quit.

Luckily I have never had this problem. I'd rather order bottled water at a take out place to a coke, even.

i haven't had a soda in 3 weeks, easy peasy. i made not drinking soda a fitness goal of mine and it looks like i have broken the habit. I am a sucker for 100% fruit juice though and i drink a glass every morning. I also drink iced tea at dinner, green tea before bed (decaf) and water all throughout the day.

i gave up soda over a year ago - just because the soda machine was broken at work lol! i had the worst withdrawl - one more tip - dont think that since its "just soda" you wont go through the headaches or cravings... make sure you account for that slump you might run into after lunch!

otherwise fit's tips are exactly how i keep going without soda in my life. its worth it, i promise - it feels great!

I've limited myself to one diet coke with lunch every day and diet soda when I eat out. I'm starting to swap iced tea when I eat out, but I don't think I'll ever be able to drop my diet coke with lunch. My husband must have his diet coke so I'll never be able to get it out of the fridge!

luckily i've never been much of a soda drinker, but i've had a lot of friends that were and i can empathize with folks when they want to get it out of their diet and find that it's harder. i think that if you are able to drink a lot of water, or something else you'll find that you don't NEED soda as much as you thought.

I can't do the whole carbonated beverage thing. I hate the feeling of the bubbles in my throat! It's mildly painful as far as I'm concerned!

I don't care much for soda, but my husband enjoys it. We both know it's not healthy, so what we've done is just not buy it at the supermarket anymore. He orders it whenever we go out for lunch of dinner, and not always. so, he still gets his little taste pleasure, but not as often as if it were to be available on the fridge every day.

Lo Lo - I never knew someone else felt that way about bubbles... OMG!!!! That's the exact reason I don't like sodas... not even champagne, and much less beer Smiling funny enough, I love bubbles, and bubble-making machines - LOL

I drink Diet Coke only when at restaurants... not I drink Green Tea or Iced Tea. Probably not the best change for calories but at least it isn't full of chemicals.

High fructose corn syrup may have a complicated-sounding name, but it's actually a simple sweetener, made from corn, that is nutritionally the same as sugar.

High fructose corn syrup is not sweeter than sugar; and high fructose corn syrup, sugar and honey all contain the same number of calories (four calories per gram).

Like table sugar and honey, high fructose corn syrup contains no artificial or synthetic ingredients or color additives.

The American Medical Association in June 2008 helped put to rest misunderstandings about this sweetener and obesity, stating that “high fructose corn syrup does not appear to contribute to obesity more than other caloric sweeteners.”

Consumers can see the latest research and learn more about high fructose corn syrup at www.HFCSfacts.com and www.SweetSurprise.com.

I should give up my Diet Coke habit, but I can't bring myself to do it. I have cut back quite a bit though, only because the price of soda has gone up so much, lol.

I like to drink Izze Esque! It is sparkling water combined with fruit juice, and is ~60 calories. It is really tasty and doesn't have any of the weird ingredients in soda.

Here is a posting I did about it for my blog:

I also like to drink tea. Roughly 0 calories, and full of great antioxidants! Smiling And during the winter, it is a great way to warm up!

Yeah the boyfriend needs a few Diet Cokes a day so this is a constant feature in our fridge.

But I love fizzy water with a slice of lemon... It's really refreshing.

When I was younger I was addicted to soda. I drank soda with EVERYTHING!!! From breakfast, to late night snacks. Gorss...Then when I got into high school and started playing sports and it was so hard core, i started drinking water and soon realized how wonderful it is! It did take time to get myself off of my soda addiction, but just drinking alot of water made me feel more satisfied. Now, I pretty much hate soda. I only have a couple sips when i eat something greasy!

I used to be addicted to diet coke. Then one day I realized how bad they were for me and I went cold turkey. I had such bad cravings, but I lasted and now I only have a soda about once a month IF that. I LOOOOVE water and tea of all kinds (no sugar). Lemon water is extremely refreshing. Quitting sodas has made me realize just how thirsty for water I get sometimes. It gives your body the right fluids, and your body knows what it needs!
