Today marks the first day of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It's a yearly international health campaign organized by major breast cancer charities every October to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, and cure. When it comes to breast cancer prevention, early detection through monthly self-breast exams and annual mammograms for women over 40 is key. So take this as your friendly reminder to take charge of your breast health.

Knowledge really is power, and having access to facts and support when dealing with breast cancer is imperative, so check out these helpful links from well-known websites:
- National Breast Cancer Awareness Month organization (NBCAM): Info on early warning signs of breast cancer, male breast cancer, and current news articles about the disease
- Susan G. Komen for the Cure: Info on how to prevent breast cancer, different types of treatments, and a list of complimentary therapies

Sign up to take part in breast cancer research. The goal of this site is to find the cause (instead of a cure) for breast cancer, and apparently doc's are finding that they don't have enough non-affected women for study.

2This is a great thing to write about. Any little bit to raise awareness is a drop in the bucket to help out women everywhere. Our company (we make how-to videos) decided to address this issue in a slightly different way to reach a younger audience. We created: http://www.howcast.com/videos/8195-How-To-Do-a-Breast-Exam-on-Your-Girlf... How to Do a Breast Exam on Your Girlfriend. Yes it is a slightly different take, but it works to get people engaged and talking about the topic.
Be forewarned the video actually demonstrates the breast exam, so it might be NSFW.
3I just completed the Breast Cancer 3-Day in Seattle a few weekends back. It's an amazing event! I highly recommend it to anyone who really wants to get involved. You meet survivors, family who have lost a loved one, and find out what strength you really have. The Seattle event alone raised over $8.6 MILLION for Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
4Great post, Fit. Such a great set of resources.
