As we go through life we begin to learn that some clichés hold true no matter what tests we put them through. "You never forget how to ride a bike" holds up while other sayings, adages and clichés crumble under the pressure of reality.
Although, your body never really forgets how to ride a bike, it is a good idea to check in with your cycling technique. Here's an easy way to improve your pedal power. Simply glance down at your legs the next time you're on your bike and make sure your legs are moving up and down - they should look like pistons. The up and down motion is the most efficient action for pedaling and will help keep you injury free. Don't let your knees wander out to the sides, keep 'em pointed straight ahead. As you ride, periodically glance down at your legs and correct any erratic motion. The more you practice pedaling correctly the easier it will become.
I fell in love with biking the first time I rode a two wheeler unassisted. I felt like I was flying down the street. So my other biking advice is to recall that childhood feeling of flying and to let all those adult thoughts fly out of your mind. Focus on how you are feeling and what you are seeing and smelling. Basically enjoy yourself; just be a kid on a bike.

I haven't been on a real bike since I got into a horrible bike accident ten years ago, but it just may be time for me to try again. I remember really liking it and feeling very free while I rode.
1I hope you enjoy your return to cycling, Sassy; I really like it. I often use my bike for short-distance (ie, places that take 5 min by car) errands, so I can make time for it even on a busy day. If you're feeling anxious about returning to riding, get in touch with the people at your local bike shop, and tell them about your situation. A lot of shops offer free clinics on bike stuff--riding techniques, safety, local routes--or, at the very least, free advice. They could also tune up an old bike--always a good idea, especially if the bike was messed up in an accident--or help you get a new one.
Oh, and, unlike the gal in the photo, we should all remember to wear helmets!
2Thanks for reminding folks to wear helmets, bpjedi. I don't know what I was thinking when I selected that photo because I am a stickler about helmets. I will chose my biking photos more wisely.
