Some bad habits are worse than others; in fact, some bad habits could shorten your life. In an effort to live a healthy long time, you may want to make a few changes to your lifestyle. Researchers looked at death risk and lifestyle factors, and here are the top five habits that could shorten your life:
- Cigarette smoking
- Being overweight
- Low physical activity
- Excessive alcohol use
- Low-quality diet
Do you have or do any of the above? Well it's time for a change, especially since researchers found that having all five of the risk factors increased risk of death from cardiovascular disease times eight; the risk of dying from cancer was three times higher and the risk of dying from any cause was four times greater.

im gonna add being UNDERWEIGHT. a lot of girls just don't eat at all, or only eat one thing a day that's not even healthy. it should be about enjoying food, being toned and healthy. unless you're making a career out of your waif like forced physique, you'll regret it later when you have heart problems.
1I would also add being born, because that increases your risk of death by any cause by 100% lmao
but in seriousness, I had all 5 of those. I am trying to quit smoking, have started eating healthier and exercising to lose weight, and i can't drink alcohol for the next fwe months because of a medication i am on so, yeah, im good! lol, or, i will be!
2I think it's hard to classify "being overweight" as a "habit." I'm overweight, watch what I eat, work out every day, and have completed three half marathons. I can't seem to drop any weight, and am seeing some specialists to find out what's going on. So while I agree that smoking and drinking are habits, I don't think being overweight falls into the same category. At least not for everyone.
3bethiesny, that is interesting that you share that. Most people think that overweight people just don't care. I hope when you find out solutions, you will share them.
4bella, I crack up EVERY time I see your avatar. I love it.
On this topic, I drink too much and don't exercise enough. I have started taking the dog for a 30 min walk every morning before work, because I am always too tired when I get home at night. Baby steps!
5Thanks law, baby steps is best. I am fearing the winter - I do not think I can do my walks outside this year again; so I am buying some equipment to continue my fitness quest.
6what if i don't have any of those bad habits? i guess i need to realize that i'm sure that i have a lot of others that aren't the BEST and maybe break those?
7I can say (not proudly) that I've done all 5 things at one point or another in my life. Luckily I've cleaned up my act....mostly. Hopefully I won't keel over any time soon.
8I've done all 5 things, too...but now I'm eating healthier, getting on the elliptical 20 minutes a day, I've lost 24 pounds (16 more to go), I only drink one night on the weekend, and I'm trying to quit smoking!
