I really love Gwyneth Paltrow. I love that she's gone from always being in the spotlight to focusing on being a mom. She's on The Oprah Winfrey Show talking about her diet today, and here's what she says . . .

I was skeptical about her not dieting (didn't she follow a serious macrobiotic diet?), but back in 2006 she basically said the same thing. So it's not like she is flip-flopping her story too much. Regardless, what do you guys think? Are you buying into her saying that she doesn't diet at all, or do you think there is no way she gets her figure from working her butt off at the gym?

She said she works out for 2 hours 6 days a week with a personal trainer, plus she's naturally thin in the first place and doesn't eat "four-legged animals". Sounds about right to me.
1Um... I thinking she is totally fudging the truth. She may be saying that to sell her new workout video, but actually she is more strict with her diet. Happened to see that last night on Girls Next Door, they did a workout video and they modified there diets for it. She has always proclaimed she was a macrobiotic diet follower. And didn't she loath being in a fat suit for Shallow Hal?
2I associate dieting with going on fad diets and diets that don't work in general that are primarily for weight loss not for health benefits. I think the word diet is overused and misused.
3Maybe to her, it's more than a diet -- it's a strict way of life.
4How I see it is- what exactly would be the difference between having a low-calorie "lifestyle" and being on a diet? If you don't eat much (say between 1600-1800 calories so that you aren't anorexic) on a consistent basis it's not really considered a diet so in that case she wouldn't be lying. Plus lots of people are naturally thin.
5Just because she eats macrobiotically, does not mean she's on a "diet" per se. A diet is a restriction on eating for the purposes of weight loss.
6"Just because she eats macrobiotically, does not mean she's on a "diet" per se. A diet is a restriction on eating for the purposes of weight loss."
Exactly, and to be more clear about what I posted usually with dieting people's primary concern is "Will I lose weight?" even if the diet is lacking in nutrients. This was of eating isn't a temporary type of thing where someone will just go back to eating the same as before and there's actual concern about getting health benefits.
7I think she eats very clean but doesn't "diet" like some americans do.
8i agree with everyone else. i think of diet as restrictive for weight loss or health reasons where your doctor advises you to go on a diet.
i wouldn't say a vegan was on a diet, since its a way of life people choose to live, so i see her choices as that.
9I would qualify eating macrobiotic as a lifestyle, not a diet. Me being a vegetarian was never to lose weight, and I wouldn't ever call it a diet. She might not follow it that strictly anymore since having kids, though. I am pretty sure I read that she ate whatever she wanted when she was pregnant with at least one of her kids.
10I thought macrobiotic was a diet. But I think it has more to do with ensuring good health than losing weight.
11yea its all in how you define diet. diet as a way to lose weight? or diet as in a lifestyle way of eating. i think she follows the second but maybe not the first. so she's prob not lying- its all in her definition
12there's a difference between dieting & having a strict everyday diet. i'm a size 2 & do not diet. i believe diets are unhealthy & ultimately make it hard to have a healthy body. HOWEVER, i'm vegan & refuse all fast food & soda. to most, that would be like a diet, but i live this everyday. that make sense?
13I watched the show and she did say that she doesn't eat 4 legs animals. And she said that she makes exercises for 2 hrs a day 6 days a week so I believe her.
14celebs normally are on a strict diet bcz they get paid for looking "good" (subjective to opinion). I won't be surprised if 98% of celebs (incl. her) are on strict diet. the boundary between lifestyle diet or losing weight diet have been so fuzzy nowadays...
15I don't think she diets at all. She probobly just eats really healthy, small portions, and excercises. I'm sure she's naturally thin too.
16if any female celebrity said she's not on diet,i'd rather believe she is not THAT hardcore about the diet, not completely off diet.
17being on diet and hitting the gym and looking fab is basically their job!
"I think she eats very clean but doesn't "diet" like some americans do."
I agree with LaurenG22. Those were thoughts, too.
Incidently, I eat very clean, too, and I don't consider that dieting. That's just how I eat. That's normal for me.
18Semantics. What I call a "life style" may be viewed as a diet by someone else. I think it is a very slippery slope and certainly a very fine line between the term "diet" as it refers to a weight loss/maintenance regimen vs. a "diet" referring to the selection of foods to provide sustenance and nourishment.
19i think she probably watches what she eats more than most but wouldn't consider herself on any kind of strict regimented diet. she's been the template for "the gamine" of our day for quite some time so i would imagine a good regular workout routine and a loosely followed diet would be enough to keep her in body the shape she's known for. i think she's spot on!
20she is known for having a strict diet, choosy about her food... so neh, i dont believe her
21Maybe she's not dieting to lose weight, but I do believe she's very calorie and food-conscious for the purpose of NOT gaining weight. Either way, dieting or not, it's nothing evil, so it's all good.
22I think she's just in the top tier of women who always like to look & feel good, and so eat well all the time and workout often to sustain that. I wouldn't say she's on a 'diet' either.
23I have recently read that since having kids she no longer adheres to a strict macrobiotic diet but tries to eat healthy and clean as much as possible...the same as anyone who wants to live a long healthy life. Nothing wrong with that.
24I'm usually a cynic when it comes to celebrities, but I don't think Gwyneth is lying. First of all she has great genes - her mother, Blythe Danner, is also very slim, and she's in her 60's. Secondly, two hours of exercise with a personal trainer can burn MANY calories, and she does it almost every day; this gives her 600-800 calories to "play" with every day. And lastly, just because she says she eats what she wants, doesn't mean that she always wants high-calorie food or that she eats large portions. It's possible to be a gourmet without being a gourmand.
25she admits that she works out hard two hours a day -- why would she lie about not dieting? also, she mentioned that she tries to at healthy most of the time. if you combine that with her trainer work-outs, i'm not surprised she looks as great as she does without any "formal" dieting.
26I think it depends on how you define "diet" ... I think she's talking about not restricting calories or types of food on the basis of wanting to be thin. Maybe she doesn't think of choosing healthy foods, or limiting foods for general health or moral reasons, as a "diet."
I believe her since she said she'd rather just work out extra. If she didn't include that line it would be less believable.
27"Following a diet" is not the same as "dieting." Dieting means you are trying to lose weight. Following a diet means you stick to a particular eating lifestyle. Gwyneth is following a diet that is extremely healthy, so good for her!
28whatever! Shes on a diet! or she doesnt eat much....again a diet.
29i think it´s more like a healthy issue. She looks like people wh don´t have a tendency to grow fat. I think she´s telling the truth.
30I think that there was a point in her life where she was eating exclusively macrobiotically. I don't think that this is the case now. As a thin person with thin parents, she probably grew up with pretty good eating habits anyway. Now, her diet (and by this I mean what she eats) is probably more healthy than the 'typical' American diet; but it seems like she is not completely eschewing an indulgence now and then. Her indulgences consist of real instead of processed food. So for her it is not a diet, but I'm afraid many people would look at what she was eating as restrictive, so some may look at it as 'dieting'.
31Her diet is perfect. Not a lot of bad foods. That is why she isn't "dieting". I am not dieting either but I'm losing weight. I'm watching my portion sizes and avoiding unhealthy food. I plan to do this for the rest of my life. Dieting is a short-term word these days.
32who is she kidding she's using the micro diet !
33I agree with previous comments...eating macro is her daily diet...not something she's doing to lose weight. When I first started to lose weight, I ate three meals a day and two snacks. I still do that now, and eat low-calorie, but it's just a lifestyle now.
34I'm in full agreement with everyone else. I've evolved from a pizza eating, cheeseburger twice a week, late night taco bell college kid to almost a vegetarian focused clearly on healthy organic food options and as much non-processed food as I can get away with.
So while in college I would have considered my food now "diet" food, the reality is that I just feel better, have more energy and certainly look better now that I've cut the crap.
I still have birthday cake, I still eat pizza on occasion and I don't sweat it. I'm not "dieting."
I'm just making life choices that in the end will benefit me. GP is doing the same thing. You add in her 2 hours a day of working out and she's OBVIOUSLY not lying. If she's working out that much, she has no need to diet. so i guess the long answer to the short question is "I believe her."
35the micro-biotic diet may just be a lifestyle, not necessarily a diet. lots of skinny people don't diet, many just eat healthy.
36I dont think she "diets". I think she watches what she eats.. but everyone should do that.
37I don't actually think she does do microbiotics any longer. I thought I saw an interview at some point for her new cooking show. She said that after having kids she couldn't go back. She totally craved fried food when pregnant and hasn't gone back. She looks great and as people have mentioned before genetics play a really large part in all of this. I believe her when she talks about her approach to food. I also believe that anyone who has a personal trainer that works them out every single day is bound to look amazing.
38i think that at this stage in her life she just considers it to be the way that she eats and that it's not a diet but in reality - it's restrictive so i do think that she does diet. it's ok though - she's a healthy eater for the most part and that's a diet in it's own right.
39An eating disorder isn't a diet...
40I think she probably just eats a really clean diet NORMALLY, so to her, it's not dieting. I eat lots of fruit, veggies, etc. and I work out a lot too...hence, I'm thin, but I don't consider how I eat as being "on a diet". It's just how I eat.
41why does 'eating healthy' have to = 'diet'... dieting is a fad way to lose weight. eating healthy is to maintain health and a good weight. it's really how you define things.
42I think she eats right...not exactly a diet but a healthy lifestyle overall ...plus she works out a lot
43depends on what you call a diet. i wouldn't say i'm on a diet, but i eat healthy.
44I didn't watch the clip, but following a strict diet is her lifestyle... and if she's been doing it for years, I wouldn't say she "diets".
45Yeah, I believe her. She constantly restricts her intake, ALL THE TIME. SO yeah, she's not on a diet...she's got an eating problem, maybe not a full blown eating disorder, but she's got issues.
46I have anorexia (working on recovering). I'm not on a diet, but my diet is severely limiting like a diet, make sense?
