You Asked: My Hair's Falling Out?

You're asking and I'm answering . . .

Dear Fit,
I'm really worried. Every time I wash my hair, I notice gobs of strands in the drain. I'm also noticing a lot in my brush. When I look at my hair, it doesn't seem like it's thinning, so is this normal or something to worry about?
— Possibly Balding Brandy

Many women are concerned about their hair falling out. Just so you know, losing between 40 and 120 strands a day is totally normal. It may seem like a ton of hair when you see it on the floor of your shower, but it's not in comparison to the hundreds of thousands of hairs on your scalp. Since your hair grows in cycles, about 90 percent of your hair is growing, and 10 percent is resting. After two or three months, the dormant hair falls out to make room for new hair to grow in its place. Washing and brushing your hair can help speed up the shedding of old strands, which is why it seems like you're losing more hair than you should.

If you're losing a considerable amount, it could be an indication that something is wrong. So read more.

Other issues can cause excessive hair loss such as hormonal changes, pregnancy, or an under or overactive thyroid problem. Certain medications such as blood thinners, antidepressants, and birth control pills can also cause hair loss. Diet plays a big role too. If your hair is thinning, it could be a sign that your iron levels are low. If that's not the problem, consider how much vitamin A you consume because too much can also result in loss of hair. Make an appointment with your doctor if you're really worried about the amount you're losing. They'll be able to figure out what's causing it to happen and how to prevent more hair from falling out in the future.

Phew. Good to know. I only wash my hair twice a week, but when I do, I feel like so much falls out.

My stylist noticed my hair falling out in big clumps shortly after I started losing weight. She said it's really common for someone with a fatty diet who starts to cut back. My doctor said it was important to get some healthy fats in with "good" oils since I'd cut back to mostly low fat and fat free options.

I was stressed out when my hair was falling out, too. It got to where I could see more of my scalp. I went to the doctor and found out I had Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. I got on levothyroxin and now I have so many baby hairs that have grown back. Hair loss is one of the first signs of an underlying problem, so go get it checked out.

Beaner, I have that problem too. I used to wash it more often and it seemed like I wasn't loosing as much hair as I am now. So when I realized I was loosing "more hair" I started to think about it and I've come to the conclusion it's just b/c I don't wash out the lost hair as often anymore ... it stays on my head even when I brush it. Then when I wash a whole lot comes out. lol that make sense?

I had this problem. It was scary! I went to the doctor and had all the blood tests run. Everything was normal. Eventually they said it was just stress --- I was in a bad job and so unhappy, but I had no idea that stress and depression could cause such physical manifestations. It was a good thing though, because losing hair was what got me to get help for my stress and depression, and get a new job. Until then I was just "coping" with it, but not very well. My hair loss cleared up a couple of months later.

Hmm, my hair is falling out a little too, I'm a vegetarian, that might be something, I'll try to get more iron and see how it goes.

kristin, I'm a long-time vegetarian, too. I was shocked that my iron level was normal since I don't eat meat or take vitamins!

    Good luck to you.

I went through a year of really awful stress and depression with relationship and job, and I lost a ton of hair. I'd easily say a third of the volume. (granted I had more hair than most people so you dont' notice at all) I could tell how much I lost when I used to use the giant hair clip, and then had to switch to the smaller ones. It was really traumatic, on top of an even more traumatic time. (I also got hives on my legs a lot) I never knew that stress could cause hair loss like that. I'm sad that I lost so much hair, but I'm so much happier after getting rid of both the job and the relationship. Stress finds it's way out of your body somehow, somewhere. Sad

Oh my. That's must be why my hair is falling out. My antidepressant; screwed with it and without it I guess.

I'm going to start taking a hair skin and nails vitamin because I heard it helps.

I'm really worried about my hair. I was on a really bad diet last summer (a year ago) and lost too much weight. My hair started falling out about November and to this date (October 08) its still falling out. I have been running to my family doctor who couldn't figure it out and then sent me to a dermatologist in June. To date they put me on a pill form to take twice aday. He even increased the strength of the pills because it won't stop falling out. My family doctor did blood work to check my thyroid, B12 and folic acid levels, which all came back normal. I even take multi vitamins and bioten every day and it doesn't help. Can anyone out there tell me what I can do about this? Should I see a gastroencrolost doctor. Could it be a digestive problem?????

Excellent overview of possible reasons for hair loss. 30 million American women, 1 in 4 suffer from some form of hair loss. In my book, Breaking the Silence on Women's Hair Loss, I talk about the many causes of hair loss in women, including those outlined above as well as genetic hair loss. I love to hear from women who are coping with hair loss as it is my goal to talk about it more so we find more definitive answers and don't just experiment on our own. You can contact me through my Web site www.herloss.org.

It's great that you are trying to break the 'silence' but please don't promote your own website. It's not only annoying you aren't paying fitsugar for promotional ads.
