MSNBC recently reported on a new study that found when faced with the choice of eating a healthy or unhealthy snack, most people choose the unhealthy snack. The study highlighted the gap between our intentions and actions; it's one of the biggest problems with snacking. So while you may think you are above the fray, it would be wise to avoid the unhealthy temptations altogether by not keeping them in your home, car, or office and steering clear of places where you know you'll be tempted (fast food joints, bakeries, vending machines, etc.). I know that if I had to pick between homemade cookies or an energy bar, it'd be nearly impossible to go with the healthy item. What about you? Do you find that you're a healthy or unhealthy snacker?

I usually snack on healthy things like yogurt .
I often think I've picked a healthy snack only to later realize that it wasn't all that healthy. Thing are often only made to look healthy...
I totally agreed with Lotka. Just made the mistake yesterday. We had "Togo's" for lunch. I had half roast sandwich with no mayo + Farmer's market salad with no dressing. The lunch itself is quite healthy. However, given a choice of chips or cookie, I thought the oatmeal raisin cookie is healthier than the chips ... Only to find out later that the cookie itself (85g) is worth 340 calorie, and a packet of chip is only 230!
I don't snack, although I try to have an apple or banana in the late afternoon.
I've just stopped keeping the unhealthy stuff in the house. I find that I have enough willpower not to buy it, but not to resist it if it's there.
I snack SOOO healthy but I'm still fat
I do everything right, with no results
I have just recently started to eat/snack healthier. I've been bringing baby carrots to class/work every day this week!
I am obsessed with chocolate, so usually when I snack it consists of that. However, I try to only allow myself a small piece of chocolate daily so I can get my fix. Otherwise, I like to snack of baby carrots, yogurt, stuff like that.
I just started as well Meggy. Carrots and sugar snap peas have been workin' for me:)
it really depends on the dat.
Fruit....I eat it all day long! It's nature's dessert!
i love to snack on grapes, carrot sticks, green peppers, etc.
MissyD don't get discouraged! It's so great that you have a healthy eating habit, most people don't even atempt that. Just keep it up and don't give up!
It could be either, even though I think some of my snacks count as kind of being both.
I don't really snack very much at all. When I do, I guess it's pretty healthy -- peaches, granola bars, raisins and peanuts.
i used to be a snack freak--my friends literally called me "snacky" because i always wanted a snack!--but everything i chose was really unhealthy--chips, dips, sugary granola bars. because i know that i can't resist them, i simply stopped buying them. the only thing i will keep in the house are tortilla chips, because i find them too salty to eat regularly and they're good in a pinch when i am DYING for a snack
I think it depends on what's accessible to me and how hungry I am. Sometimes I'm in the mood for salty things and sometimes sweet. I'm always conscious of what I'm eating, opt for the baked chips vs. regular fat, but if I want salt, I'm often going for chips vs. celery (or something that is supposed to supress my salt craving).
I always pick healthy snacks (because i only buy healthy foods) but if i'm super bored and want to veg on the couch, I'll eat too many healthy things and those calories add up too!
I actually don't have the habit of snacking. Once every few months, I might have one of those little individual-sized bags of Doritos, but that's really it.
I snack on yogurt, cheese, cantaloupe, peanuts, granola bars, and pineapple...healthy stuff! I eat two snacks a day.
I usually have one chocolate-y snack a day, and then a lot of vegetable/fruit ones.
I don't snack. I eat three full meals a day, and I'm good.
I usually end up with unhealthy ... I am trying to eat more healthier snacks though.
One thing about the California lifestyle that I really like is that it's not hard to find healthy snacks at lunch places or airports, etc. It's nice to have options and be able to choose something a bit lighter with more nutritional value...Makes my choices easier.
i've had to work realllllly hard to establish a healthy snacking system
although im obviously much more drawn to skittles, m&ms and chips...i wont allow myself those things on a daily basis. however i dont believe in deprivation. i have one of those things maybe once every month or so.
i like oranges, cherries and crasins for my healthy snacks
apples and bananas are my choice in grocery's shop, but at work and at friends' house sh*t happens
))
i like to think that i'm a healthy snacker MOST of the time. i usually try to cut up veggies and take them to work with me for a snack, and i'll have cheese at home, but i know that i'm not perfect and there are times when i'll reach for a sweet and have that instead. i figure that if it's in moderation then i'm not doing anything too bad
Healthy. Usually it's cut up veggies with salsa or yogurt dip or airpopped popcorn. Or a yogurt and some fruit or something like that.
A little of both. I would be lying if I said that every time I need a snack I pick carrots over cookies. One thing I NEVER snack on, or eat, is fast food. Thats just too much.
I usually eat both. I love to snack on fruit, but sometimes I can't resist eating a few oreos or a bag of chips! I try to eat as many fruits and vegetables as I can in one day.
air popped popcorn, crackers + cheese, pretzels, plain cheerios, granola bars. also carrot stick, celery, pepper with dip. sometimes i like to have chips with dip or doritos. i am an avid snacker.
