Valerian Root may smell like disgustingly stinky feet, but it's great for relaxing the body and the muscles. It has been used for centuries in Europe and Asia as a sedative, and is believed to help you fall asleep faster, and improve the quality of your sleep. The Greeks also used valerian root to treat digestive problems.
It's a hardy perennial flowering plant with heads of sweetly scented pink or white flowers. It is dried and used in herbal supplements such as tablets, capsules, tinctures, teas, and liquid extracts. Many Herbalists, Naturopaths, and Chiropractors recommend taking valerian root to relieve tension headaches, insomnia, anxiety, or for muscular pain because of its ability to act as a muscle relaxer.
What else is great about this amazing herb? Although valerian root has been referred to as "nature's Valium," it is not at all addictive. It's not recommended to take more than 15g a day. Though side effects are rare, some people who use valerian root for long periods of time may develop headaches, insomnia, or feel irritable, which are similar side-effects experienced with prescription sleep-aids.
Fit's Tips: If you are taking valerian root for muscle pain, it won't knock you out and make you feel totally spacey like most prescription muscle relaxers, but it is recommended that you take it at bedtime because it'll calm you down and help you fall asleep, that is why I love Extra Sleepytime Tea - it is fortified with valerian root.

1Why don't you wear the face you have when I am not around?
I was told by an herbalist that about 20% of the population has the opposite reaction to Valerian Root and is not relaxed by it but kept awake. I've met a few people who this happens to, so it seems to be true. But when it works, it works!!
2Any word on side effects, or other drug interactions?
3Smarler - I found this "No drug interactions have been reported, but the possibility still exists that valerian might enhance other central nervous system depressants, such as sedatives, sleeping pills, and alcohol."
4I have mild insomnia, and this stuff is wonderful. You get a good, restful sleep without being groggy in the morning.
5fit, after reading that link, i am nervous to take it, saying it can cause heart disturbances and mild gastrointestnial distress? I already have gastrointestinal stress lmao, i don't need no more!
But perhaps i will pick it up and try it on a weekend night to see how if
affects me, instead of getting stuck on the train with no bathroom for awhile.

I am not sure if you still want to try the tea in light of your GI stress, but here is the link to Celestial Season product locator. It should help you find a store near you that carries the variety you are looking for. You can also buy teas online from Celestial Season too.
8The Extra Sleepytime Tea is a great product. I've used it and it works every time. I haven't had any problems with it and I don't get that groggy feeling as well unlike other supplements or teas I've used! I like the chamomile mint flavor too.
9I was watching the Sopranos and learned about Valerian tea. I have some of the Extra Sleepytime. I wonder if I should start taking it so I won't stay up so late...
