When I was growing up, I remember being in a bad mood and some stupid boy saying, "Oh, you must be on the rag!" That really pissed me off. Just because I'm not happy does not necessarily mean I have or am getting my period!!
Although the truth is, right before my period, I really do feel crappy and not myself. It's not just a dumb joke between guys - it's completely REAL, but why does it happen?
Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) happens because your body goes through a series of hormonal changes in the 2 weeks leading up to your period. The female hormone estrogen starts to rise after menstruation and peaks around mid-cycle (ovulation). It then rapidly drops only to slowly rise and then fall again in the time before you finally get your period. These crazy changes can trigger disruptive symptoms that affect you both emotionally and physically.
PMS affects women differently, and its effects can also vary from month to month. For most women, symptoms include mood swings (1 minute you're happy, 1 minute you're mad), uncontrollable crying, feeling depressed or anxious, and feeling "out-of-control."

You can also experience headaches or migraines, dizziness, abdominal pains, backache, constipation, fluid retention (that's my fave right there), acne, breast tenderness, weight gain, heart palpitations, painful joints, cravings for certain foods like chocolate, or fatigue. Fun stuff.
The severity of your symptoms may be hereditary, and some women experience symptoms that disrupt their ability to function. If you're concerned about your symptoms, keep a calendar and write down how you feel each day. This way, when you see your gynecologist, your doctor may have some ideas for treatments.
Fit's Tips: Going on the Pill may help to regulate your hormone levels, and because you're not ovulating, your symptoms may become greatly alleviated. Monophasic birth control, like the Nuvaring or Seasonale may be a better option since they deliver an equal amount of hormones to you each day.

This is funny. I will cry for no reasons, and I am either angry or sad every month. and the severity of my moods depends on if I get back cramps. I tend to get back cramps a few days before...the worse the cramps, the better my moods....

Why don't you wear the face you have when I am not around?
Haha. I often feel like screaming I HATE YOU to my bf for no reason. Poor guy.
2^haha.
I have a headache. blah.
3There is nothing more crude to me than someone referring to a period as "the rag". It just sounds horrible to me...do you all agree? Fit you should have kicked that kid with you muscular leg!
4I turn into the devil...my poor husband.
5YES!!! "On the rag" does sound so rude and demeaning.
I just found out that "on the rag" originated from olden times when women actually used rags before they had pads. Hmmm. I still don't like to hear it though.
6same here BeeMoney! Gosh, but I think my hubby's accustomed to it now. He knows what to expect on certain days. Day 1 Boobie Soreness, day 2 Backache and bloated belly, Day 3 complain about anything and everything.
7Lately Ive been getting the heart palpitations I had no idea it could be assc. with my period. Interesting to know.
8I always notice that i seem to be out of patience and annoyed by everything, but no physical symptoms. I find that a cup of coffee by myself and a gentle reminder to myself that it's me who's being angry and inconsiderate, not every single person on the planet except me, really helps.
9When my mom use to work for this doctor she got a free blood test. She did a test before her period and then one after and found that right before her alkaline phosphate dropped low. To bring it back up you eat things like chocolate, red meat and nuts
10I get depressed and irritable- it's reall a good idea just to back off. I cry for no reason, but the worst is that I get really bad cramps all of a sudden. I'll be walking down the street and suddenly get a sharp pain that almost makes me double over...
11I'm glad this was posted because I keep on forgetting to tell my gyno that...
i don't get mood swings or anything.. but my nipples are horrifyingly senstive. seriously, even the simple fact of wearing a bra starts to physically hurt while not having one on is even worse. the worst part is that since my boobs are usually quite a bit bigger during my period, my boyfriend gets turned on pretty fast. hilarity ensues. well. not quite. hehe
12hehe the weird thing about me is i dont get PMS, but during my period i'll be SUPER HAPPY and hyper to everyone
13I'm extremely prone to crying right before my period, and I get really bad cramps sometimes - once I could barely even walk.

LOL crispet
15I lose my patience EASILY! It's terrible. And I get those CRAZY headaches...
I've stared drinking a special herbal tea mix for PMS problems and it's really working, not every month of course, but usually it reduces all symptoms to very bearable level, I don't even feel like crying on commercials with babies any more
16amangel - funny about crying at commercials. I'm the same way!
