Grocery shopping is usually an uneventful experience, except for the few times when life calls for a unique addition to my list. I'm grateful that I can buy such necessities at most stores, but sometimes the items I need to purchase are a little more telling than others. During times when I don't feel like broadcasting my business, I head to the self checkout.

I'm sure you can relate so tell me . . .

Isn't lice contagious? That's definitely more embarassing than some ailment you're suffering on your own.
1I agree with foxie, lice is scarier because it's contagious. I also don't think we should be remotely embarrassed to buy condoms. It's 2008; we've realized by now people have sex, and it's good if they're being safe!
2I think the cashier is usually more embarrassed about condoms lol. Whenever I would buy them it's as though they didn't know how to react or where to look:) As though they were shocked to see a female buying them up. Or that they are getting a brief look into your secret life hehe. Especially guys! They always seem to have a guilty look when ringing them up for us femmes it seems.
I've never had lice but since it IS contagious, I think it'd be less embarrassing b/c it isn't necessarily your fault that you have it, and it's just on your head. Whereas yeast infection cream is just that...for an infection and guys always associate that with being unclean since they just don't understand it.
I think more embarrassing than those choices would be any combo of laxatives/gas reducers/hemorrhoid creams!
But then again, I think the most embarrassing thing I've ever had to go up to the counter to buy was in a sex shop...my SO was interested in us trying out some fun *beads* for me, and they had this sweet looking set that said "for beginners" and boy did I feel like it! ha!
3I always buy condoms in bulk. ;p I have NO shame in buying them cos I'M GETTING LAAAAID hahahahaha.
I think yeast infection medicine is the worst.
4I have no problem buying condoms. The other two, no so comfortable to buy, but I think lice is worse b/c it's contagious.
5I feel like most people associate lice with kids in school, so if you're buying that, who cares. and if you're buying condoms, all you are saying is I have sex and I am safe. Yeast infections on the other hand...the last time I had one, I made my sister carry and buy the package for me!
6Yeast infection meds by far. I have to buy them for my dog (she gets yeast infections in her ears!!!) and I'm always sooooo embarrassed. Who cares about condoms ... and with kids in school, lice treatments aren't even that embarrassing.
7Apparantly I have no shame. Yeast infections and lice don't bother me because it's not like I chose to have them, so why be embarrassed? I choose to have sex like a lot of other adults, so I'm not embarrassed by that either. I'm proud that I'm smart enough to use protection
I was embarrassed when I was younger and had to buy a pregnancy test once, but that's because the clerk made a comment about it. Seriously.
8by far i think that it's more embarrassing to buy yeast infection medication. i think that we're of an age where it's ok to buy condoms and you don't have to lower your head in shame, and the lice thing - i can probably say that most people don't know enough about lice to really pass judgement. it's the yeast infection thing cause guys have no clue about them, and women - well they know what it's like and for me- i kind of shy away from anything that sounds like yeast infection cause i just get this icky feeling anytime i even think of it.
9Yeast infection meds, absolutely. Haven't had to buy any yet, luckily.. I, like Berlin, think that hemorrhoid creams etc. might be even worse, though. Depends on who the cashier is too, I guess.
10I've always thought pregnancy tests were pretty embarrassing too, given your age at the time of purchase. I also always feel bad for people buying ex-lax or hemroid ointment.
11I agree with 356UIK about the preggo tests! But I've never bought yeast infection treatment or lice treatment. Only condoms & pregnancy tests!
12You know what would be truly embarassing to be seen buying? Enemas.
The rest of this stuff really wouldn't faze me. Except for maybe yeast infection medicine, because I've never had one so I've never actually bought that stuff.
13Actually enemas & douches...
14As for me, it's condoms. I've been married for several years, and I'm still embarrassed about buying them. Hubbie buys them.
15It doesn't bother me to buy any of those things. I've never had to buy a yeast infection cream though. I use contraceptive gel instead of condoms, and have never been embarrassed about buying it. I've got a kid in school, so if I had to buy lice treatment, it's just a fact of life! I was embarrassed when I bought my one and only pregnancy test, but I was trying to get pregnant, so I don't know why it was hard! It was positive by the way!
16Yeast infection medicine, for sure! Lice meds wouldn't be so bad because I think people would just assume that I was buying it for a little kid (or, I would say I was!).
17I feel that I would be embarassed to get any of this stuff. haha
18
Nothing embarrassing about buying condoms ... it just means you're getting some ...
19i always get really embarrassed about buying yeast infection medicine. mostly cuz it seems like every time i have to buy it, it's the ONLY thing i have to buy! so when i go to the checkout it's obvious that they only reason i came to the store was for it. i don't know...it makes sense in my brain haha.
funny story....i cashiered at wal-mart in HS for about six months. the best transaction i ever had was a guy (looked to be in his early twenties) who bought handcuffs, new boxers, and a box of condoms! not a sign of shame or embarrassment on his face! i really wanted to say something like "have fun!" or something but i knew i would have gotten in huge trouble by my boss lmao
20I've only had to buy yeast infection meds once and that was enough for me. That's definitely more embarrassing than buying condoms or lice shampoo. Actually, the most embarrassing purchase I've ever made was on the day before our anniversary: I bought thigh-high fishnet stockings, KY jelly, and massage oil. The cashier gave me a kind of funny look, but hey, I was going to get some so I didn't really care!
21wow, reading the comments i can definetely see differences in culture.
condoms are not embarassing, but unconciously i feel embarassed, then i remember that's all natural and actually very healthy.
lice medicine - not embarassing, cause it's nobody's business, but i guess if i had to chose this one would win. i associate it with carelesness. i had a desk partner in 4 grade with lice and i never got them, so you have to really try hard to get them.
yeast infection embarassing? you all are crazy! that's like buying cold medicine and feeling bad because you didn't succeed in keeping your body perfect.
22None of the above are embarrassing to me. I got a list that caused the guy at Walgreens to actually stop dead in his tracks and ask if I needed help.
The list:
Glycerin suppositories
Phospho soda
Dulcolax softgels
Wet toliet paper wipes
Depends undergarments
and
a Consumer Reports magazine year in review guide
The dude who had to get the ducolax from behind the plastic barrier looked in my cart then at me then back at my cart - prompting me to eyeball him back and say, "WHAT?!! Do you have a question? Or do you just want my to share this stuff with you?"
23Wackdoodle- I agree, none of the stuff listed is embarrassing. I mean, most women HAVE had yeast infections and know they're a total pain...
I also would not want to be seen buying an enema!
24are you kidding? condoms are NOTHING!
25None of these would embarrass me. Not even enemas. I have a son with a bowel problem who required adult enemas recently for at least a week. I bought four 2-packs and never even considered being embarrassed about it.
26Lice. Condoms mean you're gettin' it on, yeast infections happen, but lice would make me feel awkward.
27I've never had yeast infections or lice. But, I would be embarrassed if I had to buy med for that. I've never had a second thought when buying condoms. It's year 2008 after all. Other sex related objects, I usually go to sex shops to buy them since drug stores don't sell handcuffs, I suppose.
28drugstore.com people!! or the self-check out at the store if you need it immediately.
29Lice would make me feel the most uncomfortable, but honestly, people who work at a drugstore see people buy all kinds of products everyday. It really doesn't bother me.
30This may sound strange, but I always feel weird when selecting a cucumber at the grocery store haha. Not at the checkout, but when I'm picking one out in the produce section.
I'm with VanillaJ... I would be embarrassed to buy fishnets, KY and massage oil at like... target or something, so I'll go to the Hustler store or Frederick's if I want something particularly sassy. The Hustler store in Hollywood is particularly fun because the loudspeaker will shout out "relax, it's just sex" every so often.
31I once had to ask an employee for a pregnancy test when I was 14 (for my mom.). It really wasn't that bad...Neither are condoms, pads, and lube. And yeast infections are usually no one's fault, but lice? I mean, lice could be on our head or on our privates! It just has a lot of negative connotations.
32LOL@FLUFFYHELEN, right!
Yeah that monostat would be the most embarrassing.
I buy lube in the biiig tube.. no condoms (..I'm in a longterm relationship/married.. but have selective girl flings/relationships on the side). I'm getting laid, are you!?
33Yeast Infection cream has to be the most embarrassing (at least to me) to have to buy.
34I'm with 356UIK I always thought pregnancy tests were a bit embarrassing.
35I just have to add that I'm not really all that embarrassed by yeast infection meds, but I will definitely go to the female cashier if there is one because most guys are so squeamish about that sort of thing.
36It depends a lot on the cashier. Several years back I worked nights and got groceries after work at about 2 a.m., so I often saw the same cashier. We got to be pretty chatty, so once when I bought a pregnancy test she got a little het up about it. That was one purchase I should have made when the store was busier and no one had time to notice!
The first few times I bought condoms (age 21-22) I was embarrassed about it. Now I'm over it. I voted for the lice treatment but even that wouldn't be too bad.
37I don't think I'd be embarrassed about any of these. Lice, well, that happens, and also it might just mean you have a kid or younger sibling who has lice - plus it's not related to hygiene at all so I don't see any reason to be embarrassed about it.
38I actually feel proud when I buy condoms because I see it as being a responsible adult.
As for yeast infection, again it shows you're responsible enough to take care of your body. Seriously, it's not like we ask for it and get thrush as a result of shameful acts!
Why would lice be embarassing? Lice like clean hair, having clean hair isn't a bad thing:) The others, I would be embarassed. I know some people who are embarrassed to buy tampons, though. That just seems silly, I could care less even if it's a male cashier.
