For most of us, time at the gym is precious, and we want to make sure we are getting the most out of that time. If you are cheating, you're definitely not getting the most out of your time at the gym.

Luckily for us, SparkPeople.com has come up with a great list of the most common ways to cheat as well as how to stop doing them:
- You use cardio machines with little or no resistance. We've all seen that woman on the elliptical machine who's pedaling like she's sprinting to a finish line. Looks like she's getting a great workout, right? Not necessarily.
- Why it's cheating: If you can pedal extremely fast, the machine is probably on such a low resistance level that momentum is helping you move (instead of your muscles). Therefore, you're not burning as many calories or gaining the strength and endurance that comes with added resistance.
- The quick fix: Pump up the resistance on the bike, elliptical or stair climber to a challenging level for a much more effective workout.
Do you hold on for dear life, or run without an incline? You're cheating too, so read more
- You hold on to the sides or console of the cardio machine. You're working out and feeling a little tired, so you lean your weight into the side bars of the treadmill, or onto the console of the stair climber. No harm done, right?
- Why it's cheating: Holding onto the machine for balance feels easier for a reason! It's because you are shifting your weight to your upper body and your legs are no longer doing the work to hold and propel your body weight. In this form, you're burning fewer calories and decreasing your intensity level. Holding on can also increase your risk for injury because you're not in proper alignment or using the machine the way it is intended.
- The quick fix: Stand up straight. Your weight should be balanced over your lower body at all times. If you need to hold on for balance, lightly touch the handles with your fingertips, making sure you're not placing your weight into your arms. If you're so tired that you are leaning over, then decrease your speed and intensity and take time to recover—then get back to your workout.
- You use the treadmill (or elliptical) with zero incline. As long as the monitor shows that you're working at a good speed and burning calories, isn't the treadmill just as good as walking or running outside?
- Why it's cheating: Treadmills help propel your body. You don't have to do as much work when the belt is doing some of that movement for you. Walking on a flat road outside is more challenging and burns more calories than walking on a flat (0% incline) treadmill at the same speed.
- The quick fix: Increase the incline. If you like to get outside when the weather is nice, varying the incline is more likely to mimic an outdoor route. Plus, you'll burn about twice the calories at a five percent incline in the same amount of time.
- You exercise at one constant speed. Pacing yourself is important if you're training for a long-distance race, but should you pace yourself during a workout?
- Why it's cheating: Doing the same workout over and over can result in a plateau since your body quickly gets used to doing the same thing all the time. Changing your speed and intensity level can help prevent plateau and offer greater challenge.
- The quick fix: Try interval training. Most treadmills offer programs you can follow, so take advantage of them. Changing speed is also a great way to improve your fitness level and increase your calorie burn.
- You skip the warm up, cool down or stretches. All of these components are important for a reason. Do you think they're a waste of time since they don't burn a lot of calories or build muscle?
- Why it's cheating: You body can't go from a resting level to an aerobic level (or vice versa) in a matter of seconds. It takes a few minutes to prepare for exercise and recover from it. Without warming up, cooling down, and stretching, you're not making the most of your workouts and you could be increasing your chances of injury or other complications.
- The quick fix: Designate a few minutes per session for these tasks. If you're short on time, jog from the parking lot to the gym as part of your warm up, and walk slowly to your car as you continue to cool down, for example. Warming up helps lower your risk of injuries and prevent aches and pains. A proper cool-down slowly decreases the heart rate to prevent dizziness, fainting and that post-workout muscle soreness. Stretching can help prevent injury by promoting recovery, decreasing soreness, and ensuring that your muscles and tendons are in good working order.

This really drives me insane. Then you have "those" people looking at you like you aren't working out as "hard" as them. I don't really care how wonderful they think they are when they are flying on a stationary bike or an elliptical, they aren't really working out as best they can. I can't believe some people think they are getting a good workout when they are leaning over on the equipment- you know those ppl. That lady you hangs onto the treadmill rail or how about that guy that is practically laying down on the stepper. But I especially love the no resistance on a stationary bike. I'm a spin instructor (even though the bikes are totally diff from spin bikes) so everytime I see this I have to laugh. They bounce around on the seat and really aren't getting the most bang for their buck.
1WOW I feel so so so proud of myself!
2I don't cheat at all. I'm doing great.
So stoked.
=D
sometimes i cheat, but it better to say i can cheat a little when i don't feel like going to the gym, than not going at all...but usually i'm very good about being good
yay me.
3jog or bike to the gym and then you don't even need to use the cardio machines! (duh)...
4I park as close as possible to the gym and then smoke a cig on the way in.
5That's you!
6I read this article on Sparkpeople yesterday! I found it very helpful. I'm guilty of the 5th one here.
7I hate to say that I'm guilty of a few of these things... but at least I go to the gym and make some sort of an effort, unlike some people who say they'll go work out and get lazy and don't.
8LMAO Jenna!
9I cant even run on the treadmill anymore it really is killing my shins luckily im not guilty of these I cheat as in I dont do my full work out or I speed it up lol
Im the crazy lady on the elliptical looking like im running for my life hahahaha...way to call me out
10Im guilty of the zero incline on the treadmill. I dont run so I do a fast pace. Also I dont do anything special on the bikes expect for keeping my RPMs up high. HOWEVER I will say I did lose 20lbs this way (combined with weight training of course!)
11Oh yeah I have changed my habits now or else I wouldnt lose anymore weight
12Ahhhh there are so many ways to cheat. I was in a class today and when the teacher wasn't looking i just stopped doing the exercise. GUILTY.
13I agree with some of the rest of you. I'm definitely guilty of cheating, but I think it's still preferable to not going at all.
I feel sort of similar about this as I do about healthy eating. I may not always make the healthiest choice, but I generally make the healthier choice. Ditto for the gym. I may not be getting the best or most effective workout, but at least I'm getting a workout. Baby steps.
14i skip the warm up & cool down stretches
15"I wear my sunglasses at night so I can, so I can watch you live and breathe your storylines"
16I don't go to the gym, I do all of my exercises outside(running, etc.) and then I do my yoga and pilates at a studio or at home with some weight training. I can't stand being in gyms...unless it's an all ladies gym(I liked Bally's because they had an exclusive area for women)! It's like a meat market to me, otherwise. Some guys are in there like, "I want to pump you up" and they're all flexing & stuff. Ewww...no thanks! HAHA, I think I got my point across.
17JennaV that is hilarious!!! You may do yourself a favor of smoking the cigarette after your workout...doesn't the workout cancel something out, LOL.
Tnkrbelli,
I understand where you're coming from, but I've learned to block those people out..well actually laugh at them and still get my workout it, LOL. I must say, that the whole time I'm walking (incline) or running (no incline) on the treadmill I just keep thinking...I want my jeans to fit cute and J. Crew bikini, LMAO!!!
18It is better to have gone and cheated than never to have gone at all! At least that is the way I see it.
19I don't cheat when it comes to resistance, however, I hold onto whatever I can, not so much because it's easier, more like I don't wanna go flying off the machine.
