If potato chips are your weakness, indulging in grease, salt, and high amounts of fat might make you feel a little guilty, not to mention sick to your stomach. I just came upon an alternative marketed as a healthier chip, Popchips. They are never baked or fried. Popchips are made by applying heat and pressure (and according to their website "a little snack magic") to corn and potatoes, and presto chango a new kind of chip is formed.

As you can see they come in a wide variety of flavors, but how do they stack up against other potato chips? To find out, read more.
Here's the nutritional info for one ounce of chips (about 19 chips).

| These chips have a wonderful light and crispy texture, and I loved that they weren't greasy like regular potato chips usually are. They sort of melt in your mouth after you crunch on them, and were surprisingly satisfying, even though they're full of air. The barbecue flavor was a little weird, almost a little too strong or burnt tasting. | ![]() |
As for nutrition, yes these chips have less calories, total fat, and saturated fat as compared to the Lay's and Kettle chips, but they also have more carbs and sodium and less protein. Comparing ingredients just makes me cringe. These chips aren't even made with real potatoes — no, "potato ingredients" doesn't count. If I had a hankering for BBQ chips again, I'd go for the Kettle chips. They're made with actual potatoes, have a lot less sodium than the Popchips, less sugar, and more fiber and protein. So what if they have more calories and fat? I'm not eating BBQ potato chips for health reasons here. They're a splurge, so they should taste like it.

I eat a 100-calorie pack of cheetos with my sandwich at lunch every day...I think I'll just stick with that!
1Fit, I'm with you. I hate reconstituted ingredients, even if they are 'healthier'. And my goodness, but Kettle Chips are addictive! Ever tried another natural brand, Burt's? They might only be in the UK ... but they come in Bloody Mary flavour which is amazing.
2I've tried the PopChips - I like the Garlic Parmesan flavor, but didn't look too closely at the ingredient list. I was more concerned about the total calorie count. Boo to reconstituted potato stuff.
Wambalus, I really miss the Tyrell's crisps that I was able to buy while in the UK this summer, especially their Ludlow Sausage with Wholegrain Mustard flavour. Delicious! I never tried the Burt's, but they do sound good.
3I kind of love pop chips, fortunately i rarely indulge
4I love popchips too -- and BBQ is my favorite flavor (though salt & pepper is a close second)! Yes people eat chips for great taste and crunch, not health reasons like the writer said, but that's why I love popchips because they taste great AND have fewer calories and less fat then other chips. Sodium's not my issue whe it comes to my salty snack cravings:) And if I wanted more fiber and protein, I'd eat an energy bar instead!
5hmmmm Kettle chips, yummy
6I just had these for the 1st time today, and I was gonna tell you (fitsugar) about them! How funny! They taste good, and are less cals and fat. The potato ingredients aren't like terrible foods..it's not like they put HFCS in it! I love the taste, and the lower calorie & fat count.
7Popchips are amazing! My kids absolutely love them for an occasional snack, and I don't feel bad about giving them a few because of the low calorie count and all natural ingredients. BBQ happens to be my favorite, but my husband always asks for the sea salt & vinegar. Everyone should try for themselves!
8i've only seen and tried the original flavor and i love it!
9Popchips are yummy!
10I love these things! The parmesean/garlic ones are awesome...
11They sound like they'd be sort of like Pringles, but a bit "healthier". I dunno, just because they're lower in calories doesn't mean they're better for you. I'll probably just stick with avoiding chips like I have been doing all along.
12BBQ Popchips are my fav!! I love them! I first discovered them at Costco but now I don't see them there. Once in a while Safeway has them but they are usually out of BBQ. I tried Salt and Pepper but didn't really like it. No reflection on the chips, just not a flavor I'm into. I would love to try the other flavors if I could find them. They are really different from Pringles, they have more flavor and are thicker with a different texture and really crunchy. Safeway already has a store brand that is trying to compete with the BBQ but the flavor isn't as strong and they aren't as crunchy. But, they'll do in a pinch and they have even fewer calories. Wow, I must really like 'em because I think this is one of my longest comments, ever. Ah, such passion for snack foods.
13I love these! I had them a few hours ago as a snack. I love the sea salt and vinegar favor. yum!
14I just tried Buffalo Bleu Krinkle Kettle Chips today and OMG they are amazing.
15itsme, I second your OMG. blue krinkle is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO GOOD YUMYUM!!
anyway, there was a popchips sample corner at Costco today... shoulda tried one!!
16Oooh I wanna try!
