Brooke Shields, despite being a big star, still has her fair share of fitness issues. She knows the importance of staying healthy but understands that life can throw you curve balls. In the October issue of Shape, she opens up about how she overcomes such shake-ups. Here are highlights
:
Sure, it’s easy — as Brooke knows — to stick to a healthy eating and regular exercise program when everything is going according to schedule. It’s when your day-to-day routine gets an unexpected shake-up that your skills are put to the test. "I was worried about getting out of shape and gaining weight after the [foot] surgery," says Brooke. "So just as I did with my pregnancies, I decided to go into it at my physical best." For her, that meant ramping up her exercise routine to preemptively drop a few pounds before her operation.
To see what her go-to workout is for dropping a few pounds, just

"Spinning is the only way I ever lose weight," she says. "It’s purely about keeping my heart rate up and burning calories." Now, two months after surgery, she’s gained 9 pounds. "That was a little more than I’d hoped, but by giving myself that cushion, I know I’ll get back into shape pretty quickly once I can start Spinning again," she says.
How true is that? And one of the hardest things is to stay on track when things are not on schedule – um hello, holidays. Have you ever experienced a little (or big) shake-up in your life that put your health and fitness goals on hold? If so, share with us below!

damn, she looks great!
1Things shake up my fitness routine all the time, Fit! I'm not as disciplined as Brooke.
Just as a side note about Brooke on this cover - it irks me what they have done with her boobs. She doesn't have boobs and they have given some to her. I wish the airbrushing would stop.
2I hate it when I'm doing great with my work-outs, and I get a winter cold or something that requires me to put them on hold for a couple weeks. It drives me crazy!
3She's in fantastic shape!
4I agree with her about Spinning.
It's such a fun class. One of my favorites, besides yoga.
I saw her on David Letterman not too long ago before she had her surgery and she talked about how spinning and yoga were the only things she did for exercise b/c she tended to bulk up fast when she lifted weights. I gotta agree - she looks fab and like her I love me some spinning! (and yoga too!)
5I hope I look as great as her when I reach her age!
6Still gorgeous, one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen. And she seems to be really nice.
7I love her! I started two weeks ago to fend off the inevitable Thanksgiving/Christmas gain.
8Now I want to take a spinning class. That's a first!
9she looks awesome. I too am finding that spinning is the only way that I seem to loose weight or see any movement in the weightloss battle.
10I have to admit she looks fantastic. her face though - she always looks a little like a drag queen to me.
11she looks FANTASTIC on that cover. i'm always in awe of brooke - she's always managed to keep a positive position on everything that she does - and this is just another example of that. i think that she had a great view on how to go into things, knowing that she was going to be out of commission for a bit - and as we can see, she was healthy about it, and she's healthy coming out.
12She had the right idea! I knew a friend that was afraid of the freshman 15, so the summer before college, she worked her butt off to lose at least 20-30 lbs (She wasn't fit before, so it also gave her a good opportunity to begin living a healthy lifestyle). Now, instead of gaining any weight, she's just been melting off the pounds and looking healthier than ever.
13wait she put stress on her foot before surgery just for the sake of not gaining vanity 5 lbs during recovery? shallow.
14I know how that goes...when I can't do my normal routine for a while, I totally gain a pound or two. When I get back to my routine, I lose the weight again.
